You guys seen this?

http://maps.google.com

This blows mapquest out of the water. Type in the address for a great roadmap view, then click "satellite" to see an acutal satellite overlay.

Now to make it political...discuss the Big Brother nature of such wonderful technology. Too bad the satellite feeds are not real-time!

I'm afraid there are people working on that as we speak. Where does google find so much money to do all these things?

I wonder how long it will take for them to have this service in other countries (i.e. Brazil ). 5 years, perhaps?

Good question. I bet there are some international legal hurdles involved. It sure is a cool service.

They simply bought Keyhole which has been working on this sine 2001.

Yea I posted this in the COR as a game of sorts to see if anybody could google map something cool.

I googlemapped:

Niagara falls

http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=niagar...15085&t=k&hl=en

And some aircraft carriers/destroyers in Norfolk VA

http://maps.google.com/maps?spn=0.0...+virginia&hl=en

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Apr-08-2005 21:17:

Hmm, really nice, too bad it's just the US and Canada...

Very cool. I flew it across the Atlantic thinking and saw London and France, but unfortunately no underpants. No Eiffel Tower either as it required a level of zoom that the satellites didn't currently have for that region of the globe.

Damn, tried Terraserver.com as well and came up empty handed.

geez, you liberals! Nothing's ever good enough for you.

I'd be nice if it could feed people in Africa too...

Shit, its damn cool, I don't care what you say. I've been using google maps since I first discovered it around January. Its the bomb, now that they added satilite, its only more da bomb.

wow, that is sooo cool

I'm surprised it hasn't been labeled a national security threat yet, actually.

There's really no need. In times of war, I believe the department of defense asks companies like keyhole and what not to cease updating their satellite services for certain regions. For example, I think you would be hard pressed to find a private company doing imagery surveys of Iraq and selling that data.

Shakka, you can get Paris from the DigitalGlobe's satellite ImageLibrary: http://www.digitalglobe.com/

They plaster their logo over the image unless you want to buy it, but the pics are there.

http://www.us.map24.com/

you should try that one... another 10 times better than google

Posted by Shakka on Apr-22-2005 19:08:

Interesting. That one is pretty cool, though I must say I am a sucker for the Google satellite image overlay. Does that one have a similar feature?

Posted by kernkraft on Apr-22-2005 19:17:

dont know... but i LOVE map24's interactive zoom! have you tried the full screen view?

by the way, the google/keyhole cooperation is quite interesting... a few months ago, the keyhole map material was not free, you had to pay a monthly fee.

Conspiracy theorists unite. Gotta love Area 51 on Google Maps(supposedly, I should say!). I think it actually may be a dry lake, but it does look eerily suspicious. Some guy had some satellite imagery that is supposedly not there anymore of some strange mounds in the desert. Also, if you scan to the north there are some large, green circular things. Who knows what the hell they are? Occrider?

Area 51?
