WTF guys

My parents just got an email saying that we had higher intranetz activity than average internet users, and would like us to disable what is most likely filesharing which causes this excess traffic.

They insist that we reply.

Wtf do I do? I dont understand. If you are paying for le intraweb shouldnt you be able to use it?

What do i do?

I hardly even use filesharing, but I did a bunch when I lost a bunch of crap 3 days ago.

Posted by Sunsnail on Apr-09-2005 05:41:

Are you filesharing copyrighted stuff?

Posted by beats and beeps on Apr-09-2005 05:48:

Take a guess...

But its legal in canada technically right?

ARE THEY WATCHING WHAT IM TYPING AND DLING RIGHT NOW? OH GOD IM SO SCARED AHHHHHHHHHHh.

EDIT I should add theres a very minimal amount of uploading compared to dling.

Well, Mp3s have been deemed legal to download off of filesharing in canada. As long as you dont make money or anything.
http://mp3.about.com/b/a/077069.htm
personal use and whatnot.

For anybody who wants to tell me what they are trying to say... heres the meat of the email.
quote:
Blah blah blah...we proactively assesses our network to ensure it provides the best possible Internet experience. Through our analysis we have noticed the level of activity on your Internet account is substantially more than the average Internet user. It is for this reason that we are in contact with you today.

We would like to help identify the cause(s) that may be affecting your computers performance and most importantly your Internet experience. Often file-sharing programs Internet servers or one of many other misconfigured Internet applications can be the cause of high amounts of traffic. Not only will this affect the flow of traffic on the Internet but it also puts a major strain on computer resources.

It is important that you contact us immediately by telephone or email. If you are aware of the Internet application that may be causing this excessive amount of Internet usage please disable it and contact us. If you require assistance we would be more than happy to help.

So what are they trying to say? Pretty much that im dling too much crap? If so should I ask them how much is a reasonable amount? And then again...how do I measure it? Its sort of hard to keep track.

Dont worry about it man. My internet provider did the same thing. I have a cap of 30 gigs a month and in 3 weeks i dled 52.1 gigs worth of bullshit. if you take it easy for a while they wont care.

dude, canada cant avoid copyright laws. they may not actively prosecute people who do it like they do in usa, but its still illegal.

that said, i currently have 191 gigs of mp3s on my hard drive(s), and i live on a military base in VA. i dont seem to care.

Posted by beats and beeps on Apr-09-2005 06:03:

Man, thats crazy, mine wasnt that extreme.

For a rough estimate, I'd say in march i dled like 12 or 15 gigs tops. But say 6 or 10 of those gigs all were dled in a matter of 32 hours or so, after a virus hit me.

EDIT: Damn, 190 gigs? Haha! I only have a 60 gig hard drive...My intrawe3b p3n0r is so small.

nah, cuz it all goes through the ISP first, so no matter which port in your pc it goes to, it still goes to YOUR pc. the isp will know no matter what.

unless he somehow bounces it to a proxy before it gets to him. but thats way too much work.

Tell them that their request is not acceptable, and that you are well aware of what program is using these resources. Let them know that you will continue using this program as it is essential to your personal correspondences, which require large amounts of data transfer. If they ask for any more details, refuse their request and say that it is private. Then tell them you don't appreciate being harassed about your internet usage, and that if they contact you in the future with such a request, you'll find a different provider which respects its customers privacy.

a buttload of spyware could be making your activity look high.

they didnt say your MB or GB limit was reached, just that your activity is high. spyware that constantly runs and reports via your bandwidth could be the suspect - esp since you just had a virus|

Posted by Chris d(-_-)b on Apr-09-2005 12:30:

It's most likely adware that uses your computer to send out spam. I got a similar note from my ISP. I just enabled windows firewall(wich restricts in- and outgoing traffic) and i used some anti-virus software to get rid of the virus.

yeah run both Adaware and Spybot...that should solve it. there are other proggies too|

Read your ISP service agreement, you might be surprised what they can do. Consider yourself lucky your not in the US otherwise you could have received an order to show up in court and pay thousands of dollars in fines.

Like someone else said cool it or they could cut your broadband and if you dont have another isp in your area then you'll be shit out of luck with no internet access.

technically its legal to download mp3's anywhere in the world, its uploading them that is the illegal part. and technically its not legal in canada either, but it is illegal right now for the riaa and other bodys to sue canadian citizens for copyright infringement for mp3 sharing. but even thats going to change.

as of right now tho. as long as your not uploading like a mother******, they cant do anything, i assume your with rogers tho since they sent you an email.... they have gone to a capped bandwith scheme again, switch to bell they are too stupid to figure out what your abusing their network for lol. from what i have read rogers is going to a 2 Gb per month cap on downstream... you probably just went over. i wouldnt worry about it
