headphones or monitors

hi.

because of the space issue in my room i want to know if i can use headphones instead of monitors?

if so, do i need a headphone amp? and what headphones would be best suited?

you could use headphones to mix, but with the accoustic differences between loud noises in a room compared to it all within an inch of your ear, you'll find it hard to get the mix right.

If you must use headphones, by all means do so, but remember to listen to your mix on some proper monitors/speakers periodically just so have a more accurate representation of your mix as a reference of what you're doing.

If that doesn't make sense, or if there are proper engineers who claim that's way off, then sorry :P

He's right...you can hear everything much clearer with the headphones, but then you have to compensate with the monitors. Sounds are very different between the two. What I do is mix with the headphones or use them when I need a sound and I gotta make sure that I know what's happening to it. Then I verify with monitors and cheap speakers. They tell when you're clipped to hell, haha.

if you really want to get your mix right periodically burn it and listen to it on as many diff sound systems you can (in the car, home stereo, boom box etc..) as far as safety you want to stay away from headphones as much as possible they are no way near as good (healthwise) for your ears as monitors. plus they can make your mix sound alot better then it really is.

you want your mix to sound its best in any situation right... unless of course you are just making your music for you
