Cool House Music

Hi im new to the forums and i am after some help.

I know this is a trance forum but is there anyone who can tell me what kind of stuff like VSTi's etc i would need to make music along the lines of Vinylshakers, Eric Prydz, Global Dj's etc. Sounds like filtered house i think. (Sorry i don't have a sample for everyone).

I am also using Fruity Loops if it helps.

Thanks in advance

House needs a funky deep bass, Albino2 is good for that.

Some atmospheric effects (absynth 2, Albino2)

And lots of funky perc and sfx sounds, so tons of samples

Posted by acell on Apr-12-2005 05:47:

yeah.. i would have thought house would be very sample bassed.. short stabs..

deep bass is a must

to do this special filtered sound, you must sample an old funk track.

you dont have too just its easier too and the pussy way of doing it

House uses a lot of funky basslines, filtered atmospheric & envolving pads, stabs (which is quite simple to do in Recycle from a lot of lead/pads samples - you only need practice!), samples from a lot sources (at this moment I thinking about Way Out West - they are the masters of Progressive House and they use a large amount of samples), Rhodes & Wurlitzer on the top, Moogs (Minimoog & Memorymoog samples: SFX, Pads and Bass). The percussion & drumloop is an important topic for House style: there are a lot of tracks only for them, layered and generally, they are filtered as well, and it's very common to modulate the cutoff for perc/drums using an LFO (slow to medium speed). Use Emagic EXS24 sampler for your prec/drums, the filter on this baby is amazing! You can accelerate your learning curve if you buy some good comercial sample cd (DEF MIX David Morales, House Master Beatnik, Dance Mega Drums 2, Dance Mega House Dance, NO KICK Vol.1 & 2 etc.) NO KICK cd are very cool cos you get the percussion loops without kicks and you can put your own kick! Loading these loops (in fact, any four-on-the-floor loop) in Recycle is the best way to learn how to make your own loops. I can show a simple way to create stabs from samples on Recycle later - that's all about how to envelope the sound. I always make that from my own recorded library (those synths I've already had and sold - I recorded multisamples from them).

All those steps you've mentioned above can i do this in these programs cause these are the ones i have.

Fruity Loops
Soundforge
Acid Pro

Also do you know if there is a demo for Emagic EXS24?

I would also like to know if you are able to give me a couple of steps in the right direction like a mini tutorial as such.

If not thats cool cause the info youve givin me is a good place to start.

Thanks

yah sound forge you can do loops. If I were you I would toss fruity loops and score cubase sx 2 on ebay for $100 used. So cheap for bitchin software that you can do loops in it no probelm and everything else. I guess acid is cool for throwing loops in at different speeds and all making them the same speed... but you can also use konkat for this I believe.

Pest, tell me your address e-mail and I'll send some midi arpeggios patterns from Supernova, Karma, Virus and K5000. You can import these
midis into FL and manipulate them in order to create your own notes and chords. This file isn't big, no problem.
I also can send you some samples from my own library (JX8P, Jupiter, AN1x, CS6x, Supernova2 etc.), so you can make some stabs enveloping these samples on SoundForge (I don't have this one, so I cannot help you here...). But this file could be big (and I only send via email - your email box should support it...).

Pest, look at this link:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/sonikakbmusic.htm

Progressive House demo uses:
- bass arp from Supernova2 (with Waves MAXX/C1/Q10 vst plug-ins);
- drumloop: perc loop from "NO KICK v.1" + layer Kicks from my TR909 and MKS80 Super Jupiter (with Waves C1 & Q10 vst plug-ins) + HH from Supernova2 (with Waves C1 & Q10 vst plug-ins). Besides your software, you only need some GOOD EQ/Compressor tools like Waves. There are others, of course, and great as well (and maybe more cheaper).

So i am looking over this thread and picking up some new ideas. Ive been using Logic 5.5 for PC and using acid to scan thru loops and samples and then importing them into logic. i realized that a lot of sounds will sound great once they are layered, but when i listen to other tracks. its seems as if the percussion sounds so much more SPREAD OUt and Open as opposed to what i have. They sound very dry. I need to use other programs that i have access to. I dont have any really good drumloops.. which could be a problem. As a suggestion. You are saying to use Recycle for loops.. I am gonna do some research on exactly what it does. Just wanted to know if maybe someone has the same problems.. Logic seems to not expand the track as much as i even heard in FRUTY LOOPS. When you make a simple beat it sounds tighter.. is it Compression?

You need some good drum set (kick, snare, open/closed HH, percussion etc.) and EQ/Compression tools in order to make your own nice drumloops into your sequencer. I think Fruityloops/FLStudio can be fine and fast, or you also can use NI Battery into your Logic. But you really need to get some good drum set, free (Doru Malaia, Sirocco, ripped from others etc.) or from some comercial sample cds (Doru Malaia, Dance Mega Drums 1/2, David Morales, etc.).
If you get some drumloop (from sample CD or ripped from another source - like Moby, Armand van Helden etc.), you can use other elements (kick, perc etc.) on the top and process the whole drumloop again (filtering, compression and equalization).
NO KICK Vol.1/2 [XX-Large] has great drumloops (maybe suitable for house or some trance remixed). These loops doesn't have kicks on it.
Almost all producers use compression (again and again) and some EQ to make solid and pumping drumloops. It depends if you like to get some heavy compression or not. I use extreme compression sometimes, or not. But I always use it to process my drumloops. Do make some search on this forum, you probably will find out a lot of things here.
About Recycle... It's an interesting tool to have, cos you can slice your drumloops, pads, voices, whatever your sound, and changing the tempo/pitch these loops (re-arrange is possible as well).

I have a copy of Cubasis VST 2.0 which i got with my turntables is this prog all right to do all my arrangements in.

Also had a listen to the samples links you sent me very clean kick and drum is that because of compression?

So now i don't know anything about Cubasis so im going to read the manual and learn it. I now have these sets of programs to use.

Cubasis VST 2.0
Soundforge
Wavelab Light
Fruity Loops

Does that seem like a better set of equipment.

Sorry to ask but while im here is there any tutorial sites for Cubasis VST 2.0 need to learn the damn prog

Thanks

Well, there's a whole genre or two based around loops that aren't GREAT quality (jungle). But basically for a slightly more spread out sound, you can just drop the loop into recycle, fiddle with it there, and i usually export the whole loop back out at the speed i like it at, but then I also export individual slices/hits. Then I layer those hits over the drum loop or break, but i pitch 'em down a bit to get a slightly more drawn out sound, esp from kicks and snares, a touch of reverb, and compress everything together. and that becomes a good starting point.

Posted by Serp on Apr-16-2005 13:49:

stereo "width" can be created by making a sound come from one speaker a few ms before the other speaker, tweaking loops this way adds a great deal of depth to them

On another side of things, what hardware would be a good thing for house producers? like synths and stuff.
Just like the JP8000 is a vitle weapon in the trance music genre whats in house??? AKAI sampler the most loved gem of equipment?
