EDM in class

Our entire class today consists of listening to my prof's favorite drum and bass tracks.
Does school get better than this?
I love Columbia.

The other day I popped in the Ferry Corsten Live @ Spundae cd at work the other day. I work nights at Express a few times a week and while we are closing fixing up the store we listen to music over the speakers. My boss asked me to bring in some energy, so I did.

in my electronic music class (yes theres an electronic music class at bergen community college in new jersey if your interested).. at least when i use to go lol we always talked about synthesis (programming synthesizers) , the physics of sound, sequencing, reason, sonar and a bunch of stuff kinda obvious cause its a calss for that type of shti. But when it came down to edm (techno, trance, house that type of deal) noone had a clue with the real music and scene. Besides this columbian dude i met who barely speaks english , and also this philipino girl. They both found out about the "scene" and real dance music and ecstacy through their home countries. Both being immigrants they enjoyed festivals in columbia, and the girl in philipines and both of them always associted ecstacy with dance music (i dont know why ). For an electronic music class, there was such a large amount of hip hop producers, and rock, pop, I thought i was gonna meet all people into edm and stuff but i was wrong. So I was thinking wow this professor must know a lot about electronic music , if hes teaching a class on electronic music!. While he does know a lot about music, theory, synthesis, sequencing, and how keyboards work ILl own him in Reason 2.5+ anyday. And the thing that disapointed me the most was when he called my trance production techno. And some other dude called my shit dance house. So my EDM IN CLASS expeirence sucked.

@ tek - yeah, we did that in my MIDI class 2 years ago too. we spent a few days on that though! heehee.

@ doombot - awesome, you are lucky! haha, i used to listen to di.fm at work all the time, but i work for an orchestra, and none of my coworkers are into EDM... so i was nicknamed "club kid" and they all just kind of rolled their eyes at me. never succeeded in getting them into it... ah well.

@ astralnrg - yeah, i lucked out. our prof talked about all the technical stuff too, basically leading up to this part of the class. my prof just happens to have been heavily into the EDM scene in the mid 90s, so i can talk with him about the music, the nyc clubs, etc... he's still pretty young and into all this stuff, so maybe i'll convince him to go clubbing one weekend? haha. that'd be awesome.

@ herc - History of Electronic and Computer Music (MUSI W2340) taught by Jonathan Lee. It is offered in the fall. I strongly encourage you to take it!

Rachel
