Stupid internet

So bandwith tests tell me my max dowload is about 800kb/s and my upload is like 320kb/s. The only time I've ever seen it go close to that was when I was downloading at 1.4MB/s on Steam (god knows how the fuck that worked).

I'd just opt for DSL like I have here at my apartment but I don't like having to connect, I prefer just having my net on 24/7.

Does that $100 modem actualy make a drastic improvement because it's getting to the point that it takes multiple tries just to load a webpage no matter what else is running and even when all security is disabled. It's on a brand new computer too.

I have one but what is that going to do for my DSL connection exactly?

After a box makes a connection, speeds fly. its making the original connection that takes a while. It could be your modem, which isnt likely, but its more likely your operating system.

What browser you using?
Done virus checks lately?
Cleaned spyware?

those should help your overall connection speed.

On the computer running the cable modem I use Firefox. It's a brand new computer and has only been on for a few weeks and I did spyware and whatnot a week ago.

On the router I have ports forewarded for programs like ABC and DC and I have all security measures on the computer and the router disabled.

any router today will handle the PPPoE protocol used by DSL, you input your dial-in username/pw to the router and it stays on 24/7 if you like.

then you just connect your pc to the router and you never have to dial-in, the connection will be "always on"

the modem is plugged into the router because the connection is shared on three computers. the thing is, the other two computers aren't using the internet most of the time and aren't even on all that often although I do get better speeds in the morning but I think that's just those rogers assholes.

As mentioned, get a router, set it up properly (2 minutes worth of work) and you're connected 24/7.
As for the dl speeds, the newer dsl modems don't really help all that much. If you're lucky enough to actually get ANYWHERE NEAR 800kb/s, consider it very good luck. Keep in mind that your dl speeds are also very dependant on the server limitations through which you go through. Servers like Steam are great since they do have huge bandwidth. Firefox, at least for me, does take a little bit longer to resolve web pages, but trying multiple times sounds like something buggy. Do the pages just not load? YOu get errors?

I have a router it's just a matter of making the change from cable to DSL. By newer modem I meant upgrading my cable modem because it does help, a brand new modem will increase my speeds by quite a bit.

If the cap set by my internet company is like 800kb/s then I don't see how my internet can surpass that, especialy for like half an hour straight. I try to load a page and nothing loads, eventualy it tells me it can't connect so I just try open it in multiple tabs.
