[Melodic] Axolotyl - Stratosphere (128 kbps)

Hey TAs

I just completed my first track.

Melodic trance with some psy elements. Theres quite a few things I'm still not happy with, but I've spent enough time on it, so time to move onto something else. I'd certainly appreciate some contructive feedback on it.

[EDIT] Its seems soundclick is complete poo for hosting, so I've updated the link with a different URL. Hope this one works better.

download it from here

maybe its just your song, but im getting a 505 internal server error in my winamp, though when i click on my songs it plays just fine...
I fugin hate soundclick.com but i can't seem to find a more descent host that only lets you hi'fi play songs instead of having them downloadable for all...
I'll try again later

Finally able to hear something of your stuff Axo

Yeah, soundlick is indeed a bitch. I recommend you Dance Industries (http://www.dance-industries.com/home.php) .. it seems to work quite well. Or ask me next time, I'm sure I can host your track on my webspace.

Okay, first of all some suggestions I'd make:
The kick sounds a bit too hard to me. Maybe cut the 250Hz Area a bit so it doesnt sounds that hard.
The melodies sound quite goatic to me, even though they dont have the Goa-type melody flow. The main melody seems to be a bit working against the flow of the track thats why it seems a bit odd to me. It is very hard to locate the source of this problem, but my suggestion is you let more notes stay in the basic note of the melody, for example, if your track is in C minor, then most of the notes should stay on the C, that makes it usually somehow "trippier" in a way. I dont know how to explain it, so please ask if you didnt understand.
Anyway, the second thing about this is harmonics. I dont know how much you are familiar with music theory, but my impression is that this tune gets a bit off-key. Towards the end, the various melody lines dont seem to harmonize well, sounds strange then. I dont know if this was your intention. If not, you should get further in music theory and read something about scales. Or you might have accidentaly detuned something, I dont know, I suppose the main melody synth is the source of confusion.

Production-wise this doesnt sound bad at all. I like your attempt to make a really "polyphonic", multi-layered track, but in parts it gets kinda muddy. I had exactly the same problem, I wanted to make my track really multi-layered, but at some time I realized you can make a track sound trippy without making it too muddy. Anyway. Try differencing your various elements with filters. I like bandpass filters very much, with good settings they can take away many interferences without making the sound too thin. In my opinion, more upper-mid frequencies should contribute much. The other elements sit quite well in the mix.

I liked the arrangement of your track, you seem to know what the listener expects, stuff is coming in at the right moment.
The synth design itself was in my opinion very solid, if I were you, I'd leave the synths alone, they sound good. Only the lead synth could use some more "refinement".

Your track works quite well, but I'd have a look especially at the harmonics. Keep it up!

Thanks cybernetica, thats some really great feedback!

I agree that the kick does sound rather overdriven. I basically wanted to get something that was quite distinctive and I didnt want it to get lost in the mix either but I think your right, it does overpower the track a bit. Maybe went a bit too far in that regard.

I'm glad you can see the goa influences in there =) I really love those goa melodies but I want to try and evolve them into something else. Fuse them with more conventional trance structures for example. Probably not the best thing to try with your first track... lol.. but it did turn out somewhat roughly like I had envisioned.

Yeah that main melody is a bit of a love hate thing for me. I like the way it goes up after the breakdown but then it kinda just takes over and dominates the track. I must say that when I was writing the melody to this track, I was going through a pretty huge learning curve both in production and theory so its very likely that some of it is off key. I've learnt a bit more about music theory since though, (like the Phrygian scales that goa tracks use) so hopefully I'll be able to avoid those hiccups in my next one.

Really, thanks for your input mate, I was hoping you would have a listen...

hey dude finally had a listen!

gotta say the thumbsup on the originality on this one.. im having a hard time noticing any particular hook in there to help me remember the track tomorrow, or the day after to hum on the train to work.. which to me signifies at least a really nice melody (or maybe im just a dumb bastard with a bad memory ).

i donno about those really hi pitched arps that come in.. maybe lower them an octave down or something.. but this is all down to tastes, like i wasnt such a huge fan of that really pitchy stuff in "andy hunter - go", but alot of people were..

keep it up fellow aussie!

Posted by Axolotyl on Apr-22-2005 01:47:

Hey Dave, thanks for giving it a listen Yep, lol.. those arps get a bit out control I think they are totally off key too now that I've gone back and listened to it with fresh ears... heh... something to watch out for in future I guess. Thanks for the feedback

keep at it, a lot of work for improvement, im just too lazy to type anything atm.

Posted by Axolotyl on May-10-2005 01:51:

Thanks Pavel and AniG for the comments

I definately learned a lot from the mistakes I made producing this track. I guess thats what its about... learning and moving on. I'm kinda glad I got that dreaded first track out of the way though and I'm applying what I've learned to the track I'm working on at the moment, so its all good =)

Posted by Xenocreator_PG_ on May-10-2005 10:37:

The bass drum is pretty hard. I would consider revising it.
4.00 there's alot going on here, & Im not sure if it all goes together.
4.30 sounds slighly out.

Insane tune. heaps going on.

The hihats are swarmed by mids & hi synths & drowned out. Maybe add a hihat with more body.

Freaken Interesting one Axolotyl.

After a bit, things really start to get muddy. EQing needs work.

One of your synths is detuned, and it's throwing the rest of the track off.

This track could really use some more punch in the low end. Make your bassline more well-defined.

I think that the tune could be very enjoyable given some more work in evening out your frequencies. That can help a lot. Also, take a look at all of your synths and check to make sure that they aren't detuned such that they throw off the rest of the track.

Posted by Axolotyl on May-11-2005 02:40:

Sweet, thanks guys, didnt expect this thread to get dug up again like this =)

Xeno: yeah that bass drum is freakin wierd, I agree. It sounds like an underwater explosion or something?!? Not sure what I was thinking there. Yeah, it has a lot of layers so was kinda hard to keep them all working together... I'm glad you like the complexity of it though.

Jex: Yeah, theres some nasty detuning on that lead synth plus I think the chords are a bit off key too. A few people have mentioned that one. Glad you think it has promise! I'd like to go back and remix it sometime and even out all those anomilies and master it a bit better. Got to move onto my next one for now though.

I learnt so much and put too many of my ideas into this track... it was bound to come out a bit odd... lol Thanks for your comments everyone... very much appreciated
