Best Premiership Starting XI (since it began!)

OK, dont think weve had this before and ive had a few arguments with my mates over it..... Whats your best Premiership XI ever!! Mines:

Peter Schmeical - GK
Denis Irwin - LB
Tony Adams - CB
John Terry - CB
Nigel Winterburn = RB
David Beckham - RM
Roy Keane - CM
Ryan Giggs - LM
Gianfranco Zola - AMC
Robbie Fowler - CF
Alan Shearer - CF

Subs

David Seaman
Jaap Stam
Patrick Viera
Eric Cantona
Thierry Henry

So difficult as theres been so many great players!! Unfortunately most of my XI are Utd or Arsenal players!!

Posted by Kato on Apr-15-2005 18:55:

Swap Fowler with Cantona and it'll be much better.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Apr-16-2005 06:40:

Robbie Fowler? HAHA! Give me Gary Linker any day.

Really Kevin Phillips?? interesting one.

As for Fowler, well he was the best in the league for a couple of years at Anfield. Did Linekar play in the Premier League or was it the old division one?

i'd say phillips was the most underrated player in the premiership, concidering he's one of the few to ever hit 30+ in a season alongside of the likes of Shearer and Cole

One good season really doesnt deserve inclusion to the Best premiership 11, plenty of players have scored 30+, but have been more consistent.

only 4 to my knowledge, and Shearer is the only one to do it twice

and phillips has been consistent, just hit his peak too late and was overlooked

he had one good season, thats it. If you look at his premiership scoring record you wil see hes about 40th in that list.

I think you guys need some serious historical perspective here. Some of the players 30-50 years ago were miles better than some of the guys you're listing.

Robbie Fowler? Patrick Viera? Come on now. Even Beckham is totally outclassed compared to some of the 80s players.

football is a totally different game these days, a lot more fitness required etc...so its hard to compare.

well I'd still rather have the Charlton brothers, bobby moore, gary lineker and shilton (or Gordon Banks) in net on my fantasy team than some of the players being listed here.

You guys should watch some archival footage. The game was so much tougher back then and the skill level was incredible.

yeah, ive seen my fair share of old football....

Schmeichel was one of the best keepers ever, the Charlton brothers were around in the 60's and 70's not the 80's!

Lineker was a great goalscorer, but its hard to compare.

well, I did mention players in the last 5 decades. I just mean generally, I could pick a better team from those decades than any of the current players that are being selected by people here who seem to have never watched football before 1995.

while that made me true if you read the title of the thread it specifically mentions best players since the PREMIERSHIP began ... which means we looking at the ppl who have played since 1992.. ive seen a couple of vids of charlton and man did that guy know how to dominate a team single handedly

Premiereship is just a fancy name for the old First Division. It's the same thing...England's top league, that's all.

Posted by tall paul 2 on Apr-19-2005 09:44:

Yeah, I meant the premiership, ie since 1992. My team would be different if it was of all time in the first division.

Read the title of the thread 'Best Premiership Starting XI (since it began!)

I'm sure the other people posting in this thread are well aware that there has been better players in the English league, but the Premiership only began in the early nineties

Posted by gatecrasher on Apr-20-2005 17:24:

Yeh I only posted Premiership players no first division players

but it's still the same thing. They just changed the name of the top division in England to make it sound fancier. It's kind of like the way they changed the First Division to "League Championship" recently. Pretty stupid.
