need LAPTOP help!!
Dear NYTA's,
I need y'all's help in picking out a laptop for college. I basically need something that's good for work (word processing, slideshow presentations, spreadsheets), gaming, audio/video (music, DVD's etc.) and has great customer service....and of course won't cost me my first-born child.

dell always has some nice packages.
ibm thinkpad T series
T42 and up are really nice. they have pretty good customer support and they're like a rock as far as performance and sturdy.
i have always been a fan of toshiba. the price is reasonable too.
thinkpads are the most reliable and have the highest resale value..
If i had a choice i would wait 3 weeks until the new powerbooks are announced and pick up a g4 powerbook. OSX is by far a superior OS. Allthough a lot of people hate to admit it, just go to the chillout room and look at how many people try and imitate it. I personally run both machines but my windows machine is solely to run EQ2 and Counterstrike..
It's hard to get a laptop optimized for gaming without paying more than $2000.

office on OSX runs great.. And all documents created on a mac can be transfered to a pc running office. This includes powerpoint, excel,word etc.. Again if your thinking of getting a mac wait a few weeks till they blow out the powerbook g4's

if you have the money get a powerbook, if you're looking for a windows PC i'd say get a Dell cause they have nice coupon deals... i have the 700m with, 80gig, 8x dvd+-rw, extended 8cell batt, and 512ddr ram for just around 1100$...

Make sure you check out www.bensbargains.net <--they usually have good deals on that site. Also make sure you dont get an IBM or Compaq, from what I hear, they are really bad in terms of stability. I am a sucker for Toshiba's and use the M35-S456, Excellent laptop, can be had for $1300 from ebay. Check, Check it out!

p4's suck
prescott runs at 100W TDP and does less work then a norwood p4. its just blah.
A64's are where its at right now. but thats gonna change as soon as dual cores come out.
anyways you can't build a laptop that easily, but i would agree generally its better to buy parts for the comp online and build it. this takes some time but will save you alot of dough.
i'm gonna save up and build a quad opteron for my next comp =)
