And the winner is....

The new pope is the German. Someone tell me how they decide what name they're gonna call themselves. This guy just went from being John Q. Smithenweizter to Pope Benedict XVI.

Posted by Dupz on Apr-19-2005 16:56:

John Q. Smithenweizter? Isnt it Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger??

Posted by Dupz on Apr-19-2005 17:10:

So what is this guy about? What are his values/views? Is he another John Paul II or is he going to be some hard arse anti-"everyone not Catholic"?

Indeed it is. I was being a bit sarcastic as I don't understand how they choose to rename themselves. I may be one of the older posters in this forum, but I have never really witnessed the election of a new pope(at least I don't really remember the last once since I was so young back then).

The Panzer Pope.........

Posted by zig on Apr-19-2005 17:46:

He sounds like he will be really popular......

quote:
His condemnations are legion of women priests, married priests, dissident theologians and homosexuals, whom he has declared to be suffering from an objective disorder.

quote:
He upset many Jews with a statement in 1987 that Jewish history and scripture reach fulfilment only in Christ a position denounced by critics as theological anti-semitism. He made more enemies among other religions in 2000, when he signed a document, Dominus Jesus, in which he argued: Only in the Catholic church is there eternal salvation.

quote:
One liberal theologian, when asked what he thought of a Ratzinger papacy, was more direct: It fills me with horror.

Sounds like the next few years could be good fun......

Posted by d-miurge on Apr-19-2005 17:49:

he looks like a pervert...

Posted by Shakka on Apr-19-2005 17:54:

He's also 78. I guess they aren't expecting him to stick around that long. I give him 10 years tops.

*shakes fist towards the sky*

"YOU BASTARD!"

Alrighty then, let's welcome this UBER-Conservative Nazi Pope in, shall we? I mean, who wouldn't want someone in who says these types of things:

quote:
It is deplorable that homosexual persons have been and are the object of violent malice in speech or in action. Such treatment deserves condemnation from the churchs pastors wherever it occurs. It reveals a kind of disregard for others which endangers the most fundamental principles of a healthy society. The intrinsic dignity of each person must always be respected in word, in action and in law.

So far so good, right?

Uhh, U-TURN!!!:

quote:
But the proper reaction to crimes committed against homosexual persons should not be to claim that the homosexual condition is not disordered. When such a claim is made and when homosexual activity is consequently condoned, or when civil legislation is introduced to protect behavior to which no one has any conceivable right, neither the church nor society at large should be surprised when other distorted notions and practices gain ground, and irrational and violent reactions increase (No. 10).

Woohoo! It's not like we already have GOP Senators and Congressmen who condone violence against judges or anything! Thank God Almighty we now have a Pope doing the same against homosexuals! Yippie!

Oooh, forgot this nugget too:

quote:
8. "What is at all costs to be avoided is the unfounded and demeaning assumption that the sexual behavior of homosexual persons is always and totally compulsive and therefore inculpable. What is essential is that the fundamental liberty which characterizes the human person and gives him his dignity be recognized as belonging to the homosexual person as well (No. 11).

Hail to the Pope!

Did you really expect a Catholic, let alone the Pope to come out in support of homosexuality? Much ado about nothing, Opus. Don't act so shocked.

Posted by Q5echo on Apr-19-2005 19:53:

yeah Opus, and can we drop the out-of-context Nazi referrences...please.

Posted by Shakka on Apr-19-2005 19:55:

I think he's still blowing steam out of his ears from some recent newbie posts.

Posted by Q5echo on Apr-19-2005 19:59:

oh yeah, the "Shibbster"!
if i were Opus i'd be a little agitated too.
if i were Opus i'd also be living in Kansas.

If I were Opus, I'd be a few years older and less handsome. Aw snap!

Well I do think his history is a bit revealing and relevant, but okay, I'll drop it for now.

It's not his stance against homosexuality that I am against. Granted, that's certainly a given. However, what he says the following with my own emphasis:

To me that's unacceptable to say that violent behavior against homosexuals is to be expected, and directly contradicts his previous paragraph that I cited.

What's more, I don't have it on me directly but there are polls out there that demonstrate an increasing majority of Catholics are becoming more (gasp!) liberal - and the views on homosexuality is one particular case in which more Catholics believe the church should accept them. To hire a very ultra-conservative Pope goes directly against this mainstream majority view.

And yes, Kansas makes me very bitter!!!

I'd reply with something witty if it probably wasn't so damn true.

Sadly, such an appointment (can a person be both very and ultra at the same time?) would probably happen more than 5 times out of 10 before they'd put a black pope in office.

It matters not, we're both married. I stopped caring about my looks a long time ago!
