Help me!

OK I just got my computer back this last week, but for some strange reason when I play winamp or WMedia player if I surf while listening to music the playback goes very choppy! I just added 512k of RAM and the choppyness is way worse than it ever was before my hard drive crashed..

How do I fix this, I have a 800mhz PII with 650 mb RAM, yet I have a choppy winamp?!?

Anyone have a clue to whats wrong, because this can't be normal.. Is this a driver (I think I have all the latest ones), some setting??

Please help, this is driving me mad

the mpg123 plug in has the best sound quality for winamp i have ever heard. it doesnt support streaming tho, and it COULD make the problem worse, so i would make sure you remember what you did if you change anything. OH, and do you have the new beta version? or the older one? ive heard the beta 3 is a little questionable...late/

What version of Windows are you using and what version of winamp are you using?

If you're using an older version of Windows (say Windows 98) which hasn't been coded to deal with the speed of newer machines, then you'll see system performance far, far worse than it would be under a newer version.

Similarly, if you're using an older version of winamp then it may be prone to the same sort of problems.

Upgrade windows or winamp (or both), that's my advice.

And if it doesn't work, well, I guess I was wrong.

The thing is I was running windows ME with 128mb RAM before my HD crash and there wasn't much of a problem. But after I got a new hard drive its been bad... And since I got my hard drive (a new one) I also got a 512 row of RAM, so I now have 650mb of Ram and I'm having this problem...

I think it must be ME, because I know it sucks ass... But any technical advice anyone has for me and Jay would be most appreciated

hmm...could be a virtual memory issue too or your soundcard. if your virtual memory allocation is set too high, programs will run really choppy (i.e. winamp) check the virtual memory allocation. also with WinME it has an annoying feature of backing up your system files every so often which takes up a HUUUUGE amount of space eventually so if i were you i'd disable it. you can do it in the taskbar properties if i remember correctly. sorry i forget, i use win2k now. umm...otherwise check your soundcard config.

Hey Lynx, how would I go about checking my virtual memory on my soundcard?

I'd put even money on the OS being the reason, ME is a fickle beast, much like 98 in regards that it just about needs to be reinstalled every time you put new hardware into it to run properly.
The other thing could be 'bad' ram which is the scourge of many PC's that have mis-matched brands.
Take the new ram out, reboot and see if that makes any difference.

oh, you don't allocate VM to your soundcard. virtual memory generally slows down your computer quite a bit when you have a lot of stuff open or if you have your comp on for too long. thats why you get lotsa ram.

you can check your VM settings by right clicking MY COMPUTER and selecting properties. go under performance i think it is and you'll see a button labeled virtual memory. if your VM states 'let windows manage it' don't do it. it slows down your comp even more. instead choose "let me specify" and put something between 190-256 in the minimum field AND in the maximum field. the same number. not 190 and 200 but 190 and 190. got it? hope that helps. speeds your comp up a bit. hopefully it might solve your little choppy issue too.

This could definitly be the case, I will take out the other ram I have reboot and see if it will make a difference.

Today Win Amp was giving me trouble playing music therefor I opened Windows Media Player 7.0.. WMP runs like a dream while surfing, there's no skipping, stopping, none of that so far. May-b it is winamp that just runs bad w/ ME? So far it has been runing great w/ WMP. Thor, try WMP and see if you still run across the problem.

I have the same problem.
I have a 1200 T-Bird CPU and ME, the sound goes choppy when I download stuff or run PSP for example.

Never happened before, on my old PC.

As a Technician I'll tell you what i'd run through to solve the issue.

1. Find out what chipset the motherboard is using. Go to control panel>system>device manager and down to system devices and double click on it. do you see any Via or SIS or Intel devices? or alternatively have a look in your motherboard manual for information of the chipset. If it's a VIA (more then likely) then go to click on this and unzip it and run it http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/4in1435v.zip

2. Go into control panel>system>device manager and double click on disk drives and then douuble click on your hard drive (usually it may be generic IDE disk 47 etc) and click on the settings tab and make sure DMA is enabled, click ok then go down to system devices and double click on direct memory access controller, go to settings and click on "reserve DMA buffer" and type in 32 then click ok and ok again out and let the system restart

3. Find out what your soundcard is and download the latest driver from the manufacturers website

4. Download the latest driver for your modem from the manufacturers website. If you don't know how to do any of this or don't know where to find anything pm me

5. Make sure you have the latest version of winamp
