Dunno Im More Underground Than U!!

Hows it goin everyone,

I've only been a member of tranceaddict for bout 3 months now but find it a great site. But from looking at all of the posts everyday it seems that there is a huge competition to who is more 'underground' than others.

I was just reading a post there from a lad in america asking for songs like dj sammy etc. He got absolutely destroyed by loads of people because he listens to 'cheese'. Fair enough, this is probably the worst type of dance music around, but he is hardly gonna be introduced to dance music by listening to someone like Aphex Twin!

My point is that everyone has different taste and shouldn't be slagged over what they listen to. It just seems too many people are trying to be seen as 'underground' and 'non commercial' and then moan about anyone that listens to stuff that they have grown out of. I just think that if new trance listeners are writing in asking for help on a subject, then the least everyone should do is help them out. We should be trying to help gradually introduce these people to good dance music, not turn our backs on them.

Thanks for reading.

Yes they should.

There is hardly a big difference between what dj sammy produces and guys like corsten etc. So those people who act superior are just hypocrites and wannabee undergroudmusic lovers.

Thumbs up

Thanks for that, u just backed up my point.

Tru that Dj sammy owns Ferry

I really don't think it's a question of anyone trying to be more underground than the next. i think it's just people being childish and looking for an opportunity to flame someone.

Anyone who claims to be underground and considers ferry corsten as their favourite dj doesn't know the meaning of the word.

Not one of these threads again...

But I agree, that there is an untrue general assumption that underground is always the best, and the more obscure the artist/producer, the better the song.

I think thats true most of the time, its the obscure productions that are the better ones. At least for me. If it wasnt obscure it would all be the same.

Me & my roomate were talking about it yesterday. After listning to EDM for a while, you just end up likeing the weirdest deepest, most random tracks, because everything else just gets old.

welcome to TA

I agree with what you say but there have been many threads like this over the years and this one isn't going to change the fact that as long as there are no rules, there will always be those who think they're superior to others because of their music tastes and will have a go at any opportunity they have to shout down at those who's tastes are less developed.

You aren't underground unless you've illegally downloaded everything ever released on Harthouse.

Are you contending that Aphex Twin is underground? The release AFX - Analord 06 has just been released on the 11th of April and, according to Discogs, already 128 people have it (and that's just those who have a discogs profile).

Those who think that whoever bashes someone for liking Dj Sammy, Armin, Schulz, etc. are "Elitists" are taking it utterly amiss. They are not elitists but rather benighted bigots.

I know exactly what you mean. I kinda lost the will to listen to alot of trance because of that.

Most stuff as it is defined as trance, has an expected structure. Which obviously isn't weird. So I kinda lost intrest a bit. But the odd track really does stand out though of course.

While I respect peoples right to love Dj Sammy stuff I also respect my right to laugh at them.

Seriously though I dunno how people can just listen to that kinda stuff.

In fact a mate of mine Djs in a little pub/club (having to play chart stuff) and it litrally is a case of people only liking things they have heard a million times before. Play a track too early, no radio play yet, they hate it, play it after you've heard it atleast 20 times and they all start fucking cheering.

But in the end it is as your (thread starter) sig says.

Indeed.

To me it seems that a lot of tracks that are played on mainstream radio are often only liked because they are played heaps, not because people liked them in the first place.

This coming from someone who went on for pages bashing Tiesto and implying people who listen to him are, for lack of a better word, morons.

Moles are underground.

Posted by Zombie0915 on Apr-22-2005 18:25:

hmmmmm, I myself also try to understand the motivations of the so-called elitists from time to time.

I dont think it is a 'music must be underground' type of situation for most of them, more of a 'form your own opinion' type of situation. Alot of your so called elitists appear to like their own selections of famous tunes and musicians.

People who enjoy sammy, or armin or whatever the name doesnt really matter, but people who like those kind of artists are largely seen as sheep who follow crowds instead of finding their own music to like, or daring to be different. I think people act this way towards them just because of the statistics, how the overwhelming majority follow that little group of people. Statistically, we pick one person out of that crowd, they are gonna be a bandwagon jumper, sure there are plenty of people who formed their own opinion and chose to like a famous trancer, but most of them are stupid bandwagon jumpers.

I think it is a little presumptous to flame every single person who posts that they like a big name popular musician, because maybe some of them aren't sheep, but it doesnt bother me all that much, because most of the people who do get flamed are sheep, and the ones that aren't need to get over it because it is just how things happen on the internet, people are presumptious everywhere and there is no stopping it.

That is probably about half of the reason why they act the way they do, the other is that better information on those big names can be found at other places, places that are much easier to get the info from then here. Talk on here seems to want to go towards information which is harder to get(not that it actually does this very often), but the obvious stuff, such as your BBC radio1 dance chart musicians or the latest ASOT tracklist are much easier to find elsewhere, a simple google search for those things would bring a much more relevant site for those kinds of information then tranceaddict, so coming here looking for that stuff tends to make a person look stupid.

Were not saying that it is bad to enjoy tiesto or sammy or whatever, it seems like we are saying that it is just best to do that elsewhere, like kids are trying to kick the bandwagon jumpers out so they can more easily find stuff that they really like. It isnt all that hard to turn into an elitist, just stop talking about ASOT, you can still like it if you want, just get your info somewhere else, and talk about more obscure stuff in the MD.

A message board full of kids should be used to ask questions which are more challenging (and less repetitive) to answer, maybe that is what the 'elitists' are going for. They want to talk to people with unique preferences, common ones are best discussed in other places it seems.

Well, I did prove my point.

Posted by WM2 on Apr-22-2005 19:07:

I've just always felt that crappy artists shouldn't get any credit for what they do. ie: top 40 pop stars, cRappers, and "punk" bands like Good Charlotte.

People will always listen to shitty music, and I will always try to help them find music worth listening to. It has nothing to do with being underground.

If your point was about contradictions, yes, yes you did.
