Canada's Wireless Industry to Implement Number Portability

It's about F**ing Time! We used to be Telecommunications world leaders:

OTTAWA, April 21 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications
Association (CWTA) is pleased to announce that Canada's wireless carriers*
have agreed to implement number portability in Canada, and have begun the
planning efforts required to achieve this result.
Number portability will enable Canada's wireless customers to keep the
same phone number when changing service providers within the same local
serving area. Consistent with the Government of Canada's definition of
wireless number portability, customers will also be able to keep the same
phone number when transferring their landline phone service to wireless
service and vice versa.
"In support of the recent Federal budget directive to move expeditiously
to implement wireless number portability, the CWTA will contract an
independent consultant to complete a comprehensive project plan outlining
specific milestones for this process," said CWTA President and CEO Peter
Barnes. "It is expected that the plan will be completed by September 1, 2005."
Upon approval of the plan and agreement on a common start date, it is the
intention of CWTA and the wireless carriers to begin the implementation of the
plan.
The implementation of number portability is a massive and complex
undertaking. This initial planning stage is critical to ensure that Canadians
are not burdened with the significant implementation challenges that were
faced by customers in other countries. Government representatives will be
invited to observe this process and to assist where appropriate.
The wireless industry looks forward to continuing to provide Canada's
15 million wireless phone subscribers with the world class services they have
come to expect from Canada's wireless carriers.

Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA)

CWTA is the authority on wireless issues, developments and trends in
Canada. It represents cellular, PCS, messaging, mobile radio, fixed wireless
and mobile satellite carriers as well as companies that develop and produce
products and services for the industry.

Sounds good to me, but how many times does one change cell phone providers?

many,wherever i get a good deal= change over.

It's about time...the US has been able to do this for over a year now.

I would have switched providers a long time ago if I could have taken my # with me....it's just too much of a hassle to change your number

Posted by TrickDaddE on Apr-22-2005 14:42:

This has had Rogers, Telus and Bell terrified for years.
But they must have come up with a mutual compromise behind the scenes.

Every other major Celphone consumer country in the world has had this for years and their rates, deals and phones are far better.

I do not understand why we put up with so much s**t in the Country?
It's the same with Insurance.
It's like we constantly bend over to see how hard we can get f*cked in the a**!!!

Only in Fu**in' Canada Eh!

In a related matter, does Canada have a Do-Not-Call list yet?

yeah, didn't think so

Much more freuqently once this is in place. This is a massive positive for competition.

Posted by j_spot on Apr-22-2005 16:25:

If I had been able to keep my number, I never would ahve signed a contract with Telus 3 years ago. This is great news

Posted by dEsidEL on Apr-22-2005 21:55:

FINALLY !

now all we need is to open up the market to foreign competition !!

allow all the Vodafones, T-mobiles, O2's, Oranges, etc.. etc.. in and plz. kick some Ted Rogers/Bell/Telus ass

Well its about time we got out of the cell phone stone-age

3 consequences of this:

- increased contract cancellation fees (but who cancels their contract anyway?)

- outrageous number portability change fees

- increase in system access fees (they will include a port fee probably $2.50 / month, which will make access fees ~$10)

-------------

I'm not saying this is bad, I've been hounding the CRTC with emails on this for years - I believe the increased cost is worth the ability to change providers and keep my number.

interesting u mention that RJ .. what's funny is that by the time LNP is implemented , they might have settled that stupid $6.95 system access fee that's been taken to court

This was announced about a year ago, it's good to see that it's finally getting implemented. And now with Virgin getting into the mobile game, we should see some good deals popping up.

Good News! Its still bad that there is only one GSM network tho, cause it wont be that easy (impossible) to change from rogers to any of the other two if you dont change phones...

yeah unforunately someone in the mounds of government bureaucracy apparently still doesn't think that having only 1 GSM carrier is in anyway anti-competitive ..

Yea I never understood that system access fee when I'm already paying them for the airtime access I'm using...
It's not like they have to initialize my phone on their network every month or something...
What a lot o' crock!

Posted by rabbitjoker on Apr-23-2005 02:34:

The settlement will be:

to change the name from using the "access" word to "infrastructure"

*or*

raise your rate plan $6.50 / month

----

Don't think you'll ever escape that fee.

you and me both!! this has been a reason why i've kept my phone for so long! that and not a lot of them are nice looking like the ones abroad!!
hell, if my cell were a computer, it would be like dos

actually, i don't really care about the number change. i just don't want one of those new weird area codes: 289 or 634. but this saves me some trouble

See the other thread for my epiphany.

Posted by ShadoWolf on Apr-23-2005 22:18:

There is no system access fee in the U.S., and their systems are superior.

edit: and their packages are superior too... $5/month for caller ID is rediculous!
