hungry for new music, a recommendation service try

Starting idea of following service was "I-WANT-SOME-NEW-MUSIC-!". The mini-site was written by me - music-fan whose #1-genre is progressive/trance. I hate listening to 300 songs to get 5 or 10 good of them; and recomendations from a single person usually fail & don't work me.

An approach of the service is based on grouping "users-2-user" recommendations. Each user should mark (or import) his favorites. The more matching songs with user you have the stronger recommendation from this user comes. Eventually all the user-recommendations are summarized and the results are sorted by their total "weight".

I think the recommendations-evaluation is pretty personal-based so I guess & hope that it could work.
(There are some more features implemented but the song-recommendations was the real #1-reason for this site; more detailed description is given in "about" on the website.)

Unfortunatelly there are still too few users registered, and most of them haven't even indicated their favorites, so the results are poor so far (as there are way too few user-to-user matches, which is what the recommendations are being built of).

I don't want to boost my ego like "Man, I have a website with x.000 users!". I JUST WANT SOME NEW MUSIC !
(In the past I've suggested this idea in a couple of places.)

Give it a try people. If you won't like it, at least I will get some matches -> recommendations -> and hopefuly meet some great tunes. ;o))

Don't expect any downloads. I'm not connected in any way to any e-shop, record label or whatever ... Also don't expect graphically overwhelming portal. (The truth is that this site is 99.9% pure text +CSS -banners (as I pay the webhosting from my own pocket).)

Thank you for your time.
The url is http://www.sounds4u.net/

BTW JavaScript is quite strongly used on the Sounds4U.net but should work with Mozilla/FF, MSIE6(5) and Opera8.

Thumbs up

Highly recommend all of you to try:

http://www.music-map.com/

Its based on an extensive database of peoples choice in music by way of in-depth analysis of surveys conducted the world over!

Pretty fascinating....

Just went to http://www.gnovies.com/ and put in the name of my fav movie "The Usual Suspects" and shocked to see how accurate this thing is! Listed all my fav movies

Ofcourse you can. S4U is not intended to became another tranceaddict.com or trance.nu; it is the web-site not about talking nor forums. (I would be totally happy if the discussions remained empty and Recommendations would keep giving me a good music.) Its main purpose is to 1) find out who shares your taste 2) GROUP & WEIGHT recommendations from these people. IMO none of this just can't be done by talking; not as accurate and not in a larger amount of users and their opinions. This is what I expect from S4U ... (You may want to call it "data mining". :o)

Another catch for me is that a particular-genre aimed community site sets its kind of boundaries, which is what I'd like to break when looking for a new music. Though trance is my #1, I have bunch of tunes from other genres.

I just feel that there must be dozen of great tunes that I just don't know about. I just don't have enough time to listen to 100 songs to get 2-3 new tunes ... :o(

Thanks Sumit, but I know music-map.com and IMO this is another "people-who-listen-to-this...", which is not as "in-depth" as I would imagine. I'd like to test STRICTLY YOUR MUSIC-MATES' OPINIONS based on PARTICULAR TUNES matching, which should (as I hope) result in a PERSONAL recommendation FOR YOU. :o)
(IMO MyBestBets from WinAmp.com is slightly better approach than the music-map.com's one but still not the perfectly right way (IMO)) ...

If I knew something that would work for me, I wouldn't waste my time by writing a new web-site. :o) And I'm still ready to close the site down and save the money I'm giving for webhosting to buy a handful of lollypops if I find what I'm looking for. ;o))

(Thank you guys for reading my essays, and please excuse my poor english. :o)
