Oakenfold - Tranceport

Forgive me for being a nub...but I'm just now discovering these older CD's. At least I think they are old.

Anyways, I REALLY enjoy this album by Oakenfold. Has he put together a better cd than this one? I also liked creamfields. What is considered his best compilation?

'Tranceport' was the CD that opened my eyes to greater things. IMO it's the best Oakenfold comp ever, however 'Perfecto Presents: Another World' , 'Resident: 2 Years @ Cream' are also way up there.

I had been a fan of that track binary finary - 1998 for quite some time, but then when I heard his re-work I was like..."wow." That buildup he creates there on 1998 right before he mixes straight into the next track is brilliant.

No NO, Perfecto Presents: Traveling <-- better than Another World by far. However, Disc Two of AW is the greatest deep trance disc ever.

Oakenfold was the one, along with a little Tiesto, who got me into trance. I wasn't even that big of a fan his old comps, they just made me want to hear more of the interesting music. I'm going to give Creamfields another listen I think today, but I know it won't live up to those mixes. His Cream Residence CD is unbelievable, and although I always catch heat for this I thought up until about track 7 of his Great Wall Disc 2 mix was blazing. Global Underground NY or was it Oslo was pretty decent too. I am interested to hear this artist album he is to come out with at some point.

the mixing is quite bad. But good track selection

couldn't agree more

If by "good track selection" you mean "the ten biggest trance tracks from the year he made it" then yes.

Voyage Into Trance was much much much better.

He should have played the bottem 10 tracks of the year.

That sure would have sold albums, and brought him to be the bloated superstar he is now.

Which is what all good DJs are thinking of when they tracklist their compilations.

fix'd.

My mistake. I confused myself there and thought Oakey was a creative, expressive musical figure there, instead of a one man gravy train.

I think some people look at this backwards though. Many people whore tracks that certin DJs do. That is how the tracks get big in the first place...

Why do you think Interstate - I found you is so big. Cause its the best? Or because basically every dj has basically played it?

The tracks on Tranceport gained a whole different level of fame after Oakenfold put them on his cd. Many comp's fail in this catigory, as they are totally forgotten the week after it was released.

Or it could be because it appealed to more people than other tracks. It's true that widely played tracks become more popular, but not every track played by a big-name DJ becomes popular.

Tracks that are forgotten from compilations tend to be bad. All of the tracks on Tranceport were good, but they were the most obvious tracks in the world to put on it, which is why I disagree that it is good track selection. Any bedroom DJ or trance fan could have picked the exact same tracks. Does Oakey deserve credit for mixing togethor the most obvious track list you can think of? I don't think so.

Well if anyone else could've done so, why didn't they? Obviously he deserves some credit.

when a track gets played by 5+ big name djs it most definately does

the most recent examples being

I found you/find/jump the next train/as the rush comes

i agree that the mixing is crap. But does Oakey deserve as much credit as he does in the scene over all. Id say so, even though hes so "over hyped" for the lack of a better word atm.

There still are not many comps with this many good tracks. All thoes tracks have lasted since 1998. And they all seem just as fresh as most new material. There isn't a track on there that I dislike even though him playing 2 mixes of some of the tracks b2b is annoying.

I love this album, because it was my first trancy cd. Even if the mix is crap !

Posted by Aiwendil on Apr-25-2005 16:57:

he wasn't all bad before tranceport, how could a guy who ran the counterpart of shoom be all bad? i wonder how many legends have come from those days, and how many are actually true.

Posted by NiteMer on Apr-25-2005 17:14:

Since I bought it in 2000, and it was my first dj mix cd, which got me into trance and the dj world, I will say this is one of my favorite cds ever. I didn't know any of the tracks, when I heard it, so it was fresh to me, and I can still listen to it.

That's the crux of it, really. For thousands of 'dance fans', the music on Tranceport was quite new. Really, that's all Oakenfold the DJ has done with most of his compilations: provide the most popular trance/prog/euro for folks who don't really pay much attention to such things. DJing as an art really isn't on his mind. As a compilation, it's alright so long as you don't already have a bunch of the same songs on a bunch of other compilations (which I already did so Tranceport passed me by). Coupled with a fierce marketing campaign (touring with U2 certainly helps) and you have yourself a compilation that will get noticed by more than your regular EDM fan.

Some call it groundbreaking if they are new to the music. Folks in it longer call it being the Chris Sheppard of the trance scene.

Bottom line: Tranceport is a good little compilation to either get you aquainted with the music or have a bunch of classics all together on one disc, but nothing more.
