I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack 90.1fm friday april 28th

After a scary few weeks health wise I am returning to my beloved show to play a special set for you all....many changes have taken place at CJSF and the brilliant programming director has decided to cut my show to two hours to allow for a folk music show to air from 12-2am...........not cool. If this appauls you as it does me be sure to email [email protected] and voice your displeasure....

This reduction in broadcast time limits my ability to have guests and do my show to the best of my ability.
Very very sad indeed.

Other stuff happenning with me: I am prepping for my appearance on 4x4 101 radio broacasting in LA, California on May 28th.....pretty big and I'd love to bounce some ideas of you guys so I can head into the session with a little more confidence.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the continued support of LIFE AT 140 BPMS and assure you that I will keep on trucking for as long as I can.

An extra special thank you to Sean and Vlado for covering my disabled ass last friday. Brilliant job guys I love you.

Mirka

great to have you back mirka!!
hope you're feeling better

kinda shitty the program manager decided to take away 2 hours of trance and give them to folk music

here is the answer from the cjsfprog regarding my question why Life at 140bpm has been cut short.

"Thanks for your message. Cutting Life at 140BPM back to 2 hours was a
mutual decision between the Programming Department and the host of the show,
DJ Mirka. At this point I don't think it will be temporary.

The host often finds herself busy with DJ gigs and can't make it to do the
show, and she prefers being responsible for a shorter timeslot - that makes
it easier for her to find replacement hosts if she can't make it, and it
gives her the chance to do a short set on the show before heading out to a
late gig. This way she can continue her commitment to the station without
feeling like she has to choose between her show and her work.

Also, CJSF's program schedule is becoming progressively more full and we're
now limited to offering new programmers late night or early morning slots.
Since bus service stops at SFU just after 2am, the latest slot we can offer
someone without a car is 1am, so we've been opening these slots in places
where existing shows are exceeding the standard maximum show length of 2
hours. Life at 140BPM was the second last show with a timeslot longer than
2 hours, and it seems only fair that we don't tie up 4 hours with one show
as community interest in participating in the station continues to increase.
I know her listeners liked the long show, but we have to find a compromise
so that we can also maximize the opportunities for other people to
participate too and maximize the diversity of programming content.

Sorry to hear that you're disappointed - hopefully you're able find some
other programming on our schedule that interests you. You can find our
schedule at www.cjsf.ca and there are brief descriptions of each program.

Glad to hear you're back Mirka. We have missed you. Great to see you back on your feet. Sucks about the show, we know how much work and heart you've put into your show and to see it cut like that just plain sucks.

Congratulations on your show in LA! Just be yourself and make sure you have fun! As long as you have fun, nothing can go wrong!

i second that
just look at greg! even when he's completely messing up his transitions, his tracks totally make up for it, and those he throws down for fun out of love for music

Alligator.........learn to read between the lines. Basically I wasn't given alot of choice. I am sure the folk show will serve CJSF's purpose well, my opinion is that I had to comply or end the show. I think it would have been better to have the folk guy on before and I will be speaking with Freya in regards to this.

Thanks for all the support guys

before you do that mirka consider this...

10-12 allows you to play or attend a later gig
10-12 is a better slot for your type of listeners (i was watching the shoutcast very closely, from 10-11 the show had 9 listeners, then after 11 it dropped to just one, meaning people had gone out to the clubs. Unfort, shoutcast is our best ratings guess).
10-12 allows you to do something early saturday morning.
10-12 allows you to have a shorter friday as well.

just my thoughts and opinions, of course its your call.

Your back will be happy

Fewer records to lug around - easier on your back.
Less time hunched over turntables - easier on your back.
Not so tired at end of show - easier on your back.
More time to sleep, or party - easier on your back.

Posted by spinswax on Apr-28-2005 13:13:

Steve...........lol you are right my back will be much happier. I guess the thing that bugs me is feeling rushed to clear the studio when it is 11:30pm and I still have half an hour to go.........I guess I could always close the door. I probably will still talk to Freya but in regards to other issues. I am just upset at the prinicple not the outcome of the events. And yes I am a little miffed that the show after me is folk music...it's friday night for goodness sakes. But I am not the programming director and I have to remember this is a small university radio station not Radio one...hee hee.

Steve thank you for all your help with the wiring and the battle of the botched connections. One day perhapds it will be fixed.

Check with Bryan, Sean and Angelo. I didn't notice any humming the last few times they played. Maybe there's something about your mixer. Have you tried using the RCA plugs to connect to the mainboard instead of your XLR plugs?

rca test will happen tommorrow night...........fingers are crossed

Sorry, I meant 1/4" Stereo Phone Plug, not XLR. You can use that one to connect to the RCA inputs on your monitor speaker.
Is your 1/4" phone plug patch cable (for your monitor speaker) mono or stereo? If it's mono phone plugs, then you may be grounding the right channel signal at both the monitor speaker and the mixer.

changed the wires on my mixer....i figured it out it is the combo of the right tt and the actual socket in the wall that is making the hum.

sheesh

rock on anyways

That's also another problem. BTW, the power cord for the turntables only have hot and neutral prongs, no ground. The right turntable is missing it's ground wire! (It's actually shoved back inside the turntable.) And the ground wire for the right turntable preamp may be connected to the negative of the signal of both audio signals of the right turntable.

From what I can remember, the left turntable preamp has the negative signal and grounds reversed at the patch bay's phone jacks for both left and right channels. Also the ground wires for both preamps are connected, so it appears that all the negative signals are eventually grounded. And the new ground wires for the mixer will also be grounding the negative signals because of this.

I think that's the main problem. After all that has been corrected the audio from the mixer should not hum.

In some instances, there may be no hum in the mixer audio but there is hum at the next device (mainboard, computer soundcard, etc.). A ground loop isolator connected between the mixer and the next device should reduce the humming considerably, but not necessarily completely.

All these little problems combined are just compunding the problem even more! I guess I'm gonna have to draw out a complete wiring diagram since they don't know WTF they're doing up there.
