-- computer is really slow.

Posted by bass drive on May-02-2005 17:56:

Dunno computer is really slow.

my computer is slow for some unknown reason
I left it to download and when I can back it was very slow.
when I restart, it takes forever to load. when I want to open something, it takes alot (alomst freezes)

I have anti-virus and did a scan, nothing came up.

anyone know what can be wrong with it?

on another note, can anyone tell me how I can edit the things that load on start up (the ctl,alt del list)

thanks

start->run
then type in msconfig

go to the startup tab i believe and it lists everything it opens up on startup, and u can uncheck wat u don't want

u might wanna try search & destroy to get rid of spyware and crap

yep, anti-virus software rarely gets spyware

dl adaware and spybot search & destroy and let both of em sweep your machine

thena format is the way to go, I'd love to format again, but I'd need to back up far too much at the moment

if you have windows xp then you can also use services.msc to end a BUUUNCH of uneeded processes that can be set to manually load when needed. msconfig is good for taking out startup processes though. Do a ctrl alt del and see what processes you have running, sounds like you might have some kind of process taking up memory. Just take out the one's your pretty sure you don't need and see if the slowness goes away.

what are some of the services that you don't need running if you run services.msc?

Posted by bass drive on May-03-2005 10:02:

ok, I ran the "scan disk" then got crap cleaner, after that I defraged the drives (I couldn't before the scan disk). and problem solved

I recommend this crap cleaner program, it seems quite good

Yep run Adware, Spybot all the others, then install this great program ,

Tells you everything thats running on your PC and gives you a diagnostic of the program, also the ability to remove it from client.

Download Task Manager

i was going to say :
do what marco v says and "c:\ del *.mp3" ...

but anyways .. never trust virus scanners .. you never know if the virus scanner company is working for the enemies (adware companies) and add more adware junk on your computer

what would an AV Company be without the virus? That's the only thing that keeps making them money, so obviously they are the ones putting out the viruses so they can show the public that they are the ones stopping them..duh

Well usually i go to www.blackviper.com and it's a great website for all the services info but it looks like its down for construction. Here is one that's really similar to it...

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

That site sux compared to blackviper.com tho...

Click the start button.

Select run from the bottom of the right column.

Then type services.msc in the box and click ok.

Once the services window has loaded we are ready to turn off unneeded services.

For instructional purposes we are going to turn off the Portable Media Serial Number service.

Find this service in the list and select it with the mouse.

Right click and select Properties.

Once the properties windows has loaded locate the Start up type drop down box and select disable.

Then just click ok and the next time the computer starts the service will not be loaded.

http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm is site to use as reference to turn off unnecessary Windows Services after you've deleted the Spyware. Blackviper.com seems to be down right now.
