i'd go with the van basten's volley. Thats some real talent right there.

Hmm after some thought i'ld go for Bergkamp's goal vs Argentina (2-1), World Cup quarter-final, 1998. The long pas from left back De Boer and Bergkamp making an almost impossible control, "dribbling" the defender and scoring in the left upper corner.

I'm sure there are alot of other goals that are even more beautiful but this one really does it for me. I saw that game live and I just went totally crazy after that goal.

And man ... what a goal

I don't believe in the best goals ever. They get to a certain level when it becomes impossible to differentiate between the quality.

If you want a run down of the greatest goals in the world cup go to www.fifaworldcup.com and goal of the century. Every single one there is an amazing effort.

The most memorable goals for me seem to be the ones with controversry, crucial timing and political atmosphere. Mahdavikia vs USA for the politics, Maradona vs England for controversy, Beckham vs Greece for timing etc... None of them are particularly spectacular. Indeed, Maradona's was a handball but for the sheer impression they have left on footballing history with me they must rank up there for me.

beezer!

Beckham's half way shot
Rubber-toe Carlos freak-kick
Rui Costa scored a beauty for milan this year: the perfect strike...up there with his goal against england in euro 2004
Poborsky's chip in euro 96...every wee wido was trying that one
Seedorf's goal where he leathers it from just inside the half way line.

I can't believe no one has said Maradona's goal against England in world cup 86. His solo run from midfield into the heart of the english defence and cheeky flick to beat the keeper was absolutely magnificent.

Posted by fastmp3 on May-06-2005 23:47:

best goal ever, period.

commentator : maradonna ... maradonna ... MARADONNA ... MARADONNAAAA ... GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL

yeah, it was a great goal. Too bad their victory was, and still is, tainted with cheating.

A bit like 1966 then?

Oh yes...I forgot the jealous inferiority complex of anti-English Scots. Why don't you watch the archival footage...and of course you could always wait for the 4th goal anyway.

No matter which way you put it...Maradona fisted the ball into the net. How that isnt cheating and how that match wasn't replayed, I'll never understand. He even admitted it after.

Not entirely anti-English, just realist. Proven by the latest technology that the entire ball did not cross the line. That goal provided the Englsh a lift which meant they went onto score the fourth. Had the third not counted who knows what the score would have eneded as, completely different game, perhaps even 5-2 England, we will never know. Yes Maradonna punched the ball in the net but if we are going to replay every game where there is a contreversial decision then we are gonna have a major backlog of games.

how can anyone be satisfied by being cheated? England have been fucked numerous times (only just recently) but 1986 was the worst incident I've ever seen. I dont care if you hate England, but how you can say that was a fair result, especially when Lineker made it 2-1 and then hit the post is beyond me. Yet that in no way detracts from Maradona's second goal.

And about 1966...what latest technology is this? would it by chance come from Scotland. An American program I watched only a year ago surmised that it did cross the line by a fraction and that the linesman was the only one to see it perfectly. Besides, the Germans later admitted they were lucky to even equalise and never even had a sniff at the net in extra time. You guys really need to watch the whole game. It could have been England 10 - Germany 2.

No it was Sky Sports. Just merely emphasising my point that most teams can lay claim to being cheated on quite a few occasions, not one team can claim they were cheated at one point without never getting a lucky decision themselves!

Maybe I am being biased because I am a Real Madrid fan but Zidane's volley in the Champions League was absolutley fantastic.... I know it is probably not THE best goal of all times but it is onw that will live in my memory forever
