The Midwest TA "5 Desert Island Albums" thread...

For fun, because I'm bored, and because I'd probably get flamed beyond belief in any other forum, I'm asking the midwest TA's "What are your 5 desert island albums?"

For some sort of limit: Let's go with commercial releases only (Both EDM and non-EDM). If I had to pick out of every live set I have listened to/owned I'd never finisht the list.

Mine (In no order):

James Holden - Balance 005: Probably my favorite EDM album, all time, hands down. Absolutely beautiful...

The Talking Heads - Remain in Light: One of the funkiest bands of all time gets down to the brass tacks. If you thought P-Funk or Sly and the Family Stone was were Funk began and ended, David Byrne is waiting for you.

Phish - Billy Breathes: An amazing semi-"Concept" album, I am unable to listen to one track on this album at one time; I've always got to listen to the whole thing through... "Waste" is at the same time one of the most cheesy and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue: I like Jazz, I like Miles Seriously though, I defy anyone who can't relax listening to "Flamenco Sketches."

The Grateful Dead - Shakedown Street: Born and bred to love the dead, easily my favorite studio album of theirs. As diverse sounding as their entire musical career. Another album that always gets the "All the way through" treatment...

Not much EDM, but I figured I needed a little of this, a little of that...

Peace, Cheers,

RJT

1. The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium/Tremulant EP/Frances the Mute (Cedric & Omar are the coolest bastards ever his vocals are out of this world)

2. Massive Attack - 100th Window (has taken me places at night you could never imagine, 3D owns)

3. Nobody - Soulmates/Pacific Drift (A most creative dj/producer, one of those artists you loved back in the day and have remained loyal to)

4. Bonobo - Animal Magic/Dial "M" for Monkey (best downtempo dj/producer ever)

5. At the Drive In - Relationship of Command (ATDI's prime, this shit gets my adrenaline going)

yes, there is about 9 albums in this list but it was neccesary...

Honorable Mention: Jack Spaar - Jack Spaar (World renowned artist, white-boy rap debut album, local/childhood friend, this guy is truly amazing)

Indeed, no argument from me...

good picks RJT damn it looks like i'd be set if i was on the deserted island and only you could bring CDs for both of us mine, no order

-Grateful Dead - American Beauty... a piece of americana right here, rock, country, bluegrass, jazz, folk... this album has seen countless plays since i bought it back in 97'... the perfect soundtrack to summer. I could listen to "Box of Rain", "Brokedown Palace", and "Ripple" on repeat indefinitely

-Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks - every song on this one is great, my favourite Dylan Album

-DJ Dan - Funk the System - First EDM CD I bought... housey disco tinged funk... timeless CD

-Phish - Rift - VERY close between this and Billy Breathes, I couldn't go without "Fast Enough for You" and that was the deciding factor.

-Arthur Lyman - Taboo - Originally released in 1958, Lyman's "Exotica" sound linked Pacific Rim exotica and American jazz. If I was on an island, this would be a must!

any more than 5 and i would alternate a live phish/dead show and a house/prog/trance mix back and forth.

**EDIT** i'll have to change my picks, i just noticed it said "commercial releases" lool. these are out the window, darn..

quote:

-Phish - if its a show of my choice i'm taking 12-31-1999 Big Cypress, FL... that trip, the concert, and the experience changed my life forever (nevermind the fact that their midnight to sunrise set takes up 8 discs... cut me some slack, i'll use slimline cases)

-Paul Oakenfold - July 25th, 1999 - Live @ Home, Space Ibiza. The golden days of Oakie, got this mix a few weeks after the gig, and still listen to it faithfully... just a beautiful mix

-Grateful Dead - A live show to compliment American Beauty, I am leaning toward April 26th, 1972 @ Jahrhundert Halle - Frankfurt, Germany (The show 100 Year Hall was taken from, except the FULL show, not the CD release one)

-Corentin Emprou - Ambient2... I am luving his ambient mixes and I think that if I was on a deserted island with a beach, I would need this mix for the sunsets

If we were talking "What was the single greatest trip of your life?" then this would definitely be the top of my list...

And as far as commercial releases go, there are good ones out there, just gotta search 'em out...

**Live commercial releases count A La Live Phish: World Music Theatre, Tinley Park IL '95... had to get one more in for good measure... that YEM pwns joo all...

Posted by jam.iii on May-10-2005 04:37:

damn, yah i'd only have maybe 1 commercial release on the list if CDR's were allowed

from the live phish my favourite yet is Vol. 11: 11/17/97, McNichols Sports Arena, Denver, Colorado... the Ghost, the Disease, the YEM are all *SICK* and they have that signature funky techno space jamming "97 phish sound" to them

Yeah, DJ Harry is really a fun dude... Saw him in January with like 40 other people tops, but he held it down

It's just a bummer, DJ Harry has all the support of the Hippie Bands like SCI, Govt. Mule, etc. but the fan base just doesn't really want it... at Bonnaroo the first year he tried to spin so much house and all the crowd wanted was just some ghetto ass shit...

I hope people don't ride RJD2's shit this year...

YEAH MAN! I think we talked about that at "Addiction..."

Speaking of Ibiza, just found out I'[m heading to Holland around my 22nd birthday this year, and then to France to visit my friends sister who lives in Paris, and then FOR my 22nd Birthday (Or rather the weekend near it) I'm headed to my favorite island in the whole world!

Don't know who we'll be seeing/where I'm headed yet, but thank God I'm getting another opportunity to see this place again... 9AM Boat ride here I come!
