Yeah, it's basically a choice between a bad regime and a worse regime. But it seems that the conflict is so far only regional and that it probably won't spread throughout entire Uzbekistan.

Is'nt Uzbekistan the communist regime. I know one of the stans is communist and supposly the leader is crazy. I watched BBC once and they said he has his own bible. Just like Mao once had. I dont think the Islamics will be in control. The dictator has a lot of power + oil deals with American Corps. So if anything happened at this time I can see the US secretly or openly suppport the leader who has power now.

I think you're talking about Turkmenistan here.

the Fergana Valley has long since been a region of tense conflict, not far removed from Kashmir or the like. Kyrgyzstan's leader was ousted recently and that seems not to factor into this 'new story'.

As far as reporters being removed from the country, the NY Times had a reasonably indepth article on the situation, relating and religious affiliations mostly to the wealthy business owners of Andijon using religion to justify the reorganization of the current power scheme|
