Go US?

Mayors back global warming pact
Coalition supports Kyoto treaty opposed by White House
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 Posted: 0221 GMT (1021 HKT)

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Despite the Bush administration's resistance to the Kyoto global warming pact, more than 130 U.S. mayors have applied the agreement's standards in a bid to reduce America's carbon dioxide emissions, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels said Monday.
Concerned by several warm winter days in his own city, Nickels said he appealed to mayors across the country in February when the global treaty was enacted without the participation of the United States -- the largest emitter of heat-trapping gases.
Since then, Nickels said, 136 mayors representing more than 30 million people have signed an agreement to meet the goals spelled out in the treaty and are urging the federal government to do the same.
"We've seen what the potential effect might have been in Florida, with the hurricanes, and in California, with the record rainfall that usually belongs to us," Nickels, a Democrat, said.
"Those are warning signs. They may or may not be related to global climate change, but they are a sign of what might happen."
Participating mayors include Michael Bloomberg of New York and James Hahn of Los Angeles, Nickels said.
The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in the Japanese city in 1997, imposes requirements on 35 industrialized nations to cut emissions of "greenhouse gases" blamed for rising world temperatures to an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels.
The treaty has been ratified by at least 140 nations, but the United States has said the restrictions are flawed and could hurt its economy.
The mayors involved pledge to meet or beat Kyoto targets such as a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 7 percent from 1990 levels by 2012. Recommended actions range from anti-sprawl land-use policies to public information campaigns.
Seattle aims to meet its 7 percent commitment in part by encouraging cruise lines to turn off their diesel engines when they dock at its port and hook up to the city's electrical power grid.

Great to see that some Americans are putting in an effort to soften the impact of the Bush administration's errors. I don't now if 130 mayors are a lot though? However, NYC, LA, and Seattle must account for something. Hope this news is getting some airtime in Europe. The US can need some good publicity in these days, where its government (again) has declined to do something actively to find a means to combat pollution by CO_2...

Havent heard a mention of it in any media over here, anyway i wonder how many of the mayors are Republicans.......

Actually I'm surprised we're not on board. Mayor Daley has been really pushing more environmentally friendly polices, that is when he's not flipping out about various scandals these days

Good for the towns & cities that have taken the initiative though! I know most of the larger cities got on board because of health problems connected to many of the problems that Kyoto will help address in part.

Yeah, I'm in Lincoln Park, how about you? I haven't heard anything about sidewalks on the lake, unless maybe they're talking about where Meigs Field used to be, but I'll have to look out for that.

I live in the suburbs I really hate it. I cant stand Deer Park. But once i am done with collage I will move to Chicago somewhere close to wrigley but try and stay out of boys town. Not that I hate gays or anything I just don't want to be confused and I want to be able to bring my parents there. Oh well about that project well just have to see how the new trump tower looks like in the city. I ve seen some pics its a piece of crap. Instead of making really tall they should try and make it look different from most skyscrapers

here it is: the piece of crap

shiet. mayor greg nickels can kiss my ass. this was the most pleasant winter in seattle in the 13 years i've lived here. less rain, warmer temps, more sun, less suicide (statistically)... etc.

shiet, this is probably the 'greenest' city in the USA - we even recycle disposable baby diapers here. last thing we need is 'pollution control' - there's enough trees here to keep the air clean for all of western USA.

Ok, Yoepus. To quote my old school teacher: "Congratulations on writing something mysterious". I don't get your point at all - I don't know this Burgundy and his connection to mayors and their Kyoto-leanings?

Posted by Yoepus on May-19-2005 13:56:

here is a hint, it has nothing to do with your thread content but your thread name...

Posted by Shakka on May-19-2005 14:56:

Great. Three elaborating posts, a look-up of "Ron Burgundy" on Wikipedia and I'm still confused. There's really something wrong with my intellect these days. I blame the US food.

Daley's son was down here training as Infantry a month or two ago. Don't know if he ended up going Ranger or not when he went to Airborne School. He wouldn't change his contract when I had control of him. He did very well anyhow in the mix of trainees with underprivileged backgrounds and is a proud reflection of his upbringing.

Well I was initially, but now I am making the point that you Europeans don't even get some of the funiest movies, so how in the hell could we expect you to know what we do in small-time politics?!?

Check your sources before coming up with such wild conjectures:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0357413/releaseinfo

It's not that the thing is not released, it's just that I have realized that neither the 70s per se nor Will Ferrell are funny.

Well, St. Andrew ought to have caught on as well. Just goes to show how much more comfortable with humour us Danes are compared to the alliance against fun, Sweden.

Ah yeah. Looking at the bright side, however, I don't have to cringe or lend ill-fated support out of patriotism when one of my countrymen writes something stupid in here.
