Rachel Rossos - Ebony (Messiah's Total Trance Mix)

Id like your feedback on this little number please my friends.
You probably already know Holycow24, well she very kindly let me remix her track 'Ebony' - and this is what I came up with.

This is her (and my) first collaboration, bu im sure it will lead to a lot more offers from you guys for her vocals!

I think this is my best work so far, so feedback would be greatly appreciated incase im going in the wrong direction!!!!

At first it seems like the drums need EQ work, what you want to do is start out strong. I like that snare roll and the effect behind it at the beginning. The reverb on the clap could be better try using a different frequency if you're using EQ. I really like that whiney synth in the background, it has a nice gliding sound to it. Your instruments are pretty nice and clear. The vocals have incredible potential, but you need to do some EQ work on her voice in something like Sound Forge to bring out the richness of certain frequencies. The lead is pretty cool and goes well with the track and your other instruments. Try messing with your overall EQ. I like how it sounds once you get everything rolling.

You should make an extended mix of this song. The bass seems kind of empty. What seperates good trance from a lot of vocal techno and other electronic genres is the bassline. Try and get a really groovy rhythm on top of a really nice instrument. Overall, a good track. It has a huge amount of potential, and you're defintely going in the right direction! Keep it up.

Hey Tilda,
Thanks for the feedback.
I purposely added filter to the drums at the beginning and then faded them in - obviously a bad idea! Its easily fixable.
The snare sample already has reverb added - again, I can sort this out.

Im mastering with headphones so will take everything on board, but glad you like the overall feel - Ill have another look at the bass and maybe increase the volume of the 'whiney synth'!

Thanks for the constructive comments - a welcome change!!

Anymore got the time to give me feedback please??

Ill do the same for you if you have a track needs reviewing.

Hey.

-The pulsing synth at the beginning is very good, but start without the beat. Itll add a lot to the effect of the song. Instead, play that synth for a few measures and then bring in the percs by coming in with them through a high pass filter. Automate it from around 6000Hz down to the bottom, preferrably a curved line as well.
-The break that comes in is a bit early in the song. Not saying this goes for every song, but as a general rule to keep strong interest in the song, the 2m mark is a good minimum for the first long break.
-Good vocal stength. The resonated pulsed synth makes the song seem a little like 2001 cheese but not bad .
-The bassline could use a little stronger and thicker bass but a godo rhythm for it atleast.
-Good effects.
-Good trance pluck that comes in.
-Try to save snare rolls for major changing events like before a break or melody change or even a key change.
-Good reverb and delay on the vocals. The vokes arent muddy and fairly understandable.

Overall, good track. Needs some polishing but has the potential to be a good dance song. It is a bit dated though. If this were 2001 or 2002, you would probably be somewhere up top with tracks from Alice Deejay and Ian van Dahl. Unfortunately, its 2005 and I'm not sure how well the song will do . Keep it up though. Maybe you can usher back the eurotrance/eurodance sound :P.

Cheers,
Zac

portamento synth is cool, but I think there could be more atmosphere on it.

I think your kick could be a little bit louder. Or you could give it a little more low end. You should definitely be mastering with monitors.

Your pads are also a little thin. Try to get them to fill in the spaces that other sounds don't get into with EQing.

Now thats what I call feedback!!
Thanks Zac, its really good to hear constructive feedback now and again, so thanks for your time.
I know it sounds a bit dated, but I tried to do the best I could - it actually sounded like
*THIS* before I got my hands on it!! I liked the vocals though so asked Rachel if I could remix it for her.
Thats the thing with Vocal 'trance' tracks though - its all been done before.Glad you like my effort though, and Ill take your comments on board.
Oh, and its kinda nice to be compared with IVD - even if he is cheesy as hell!!

Thanks again!

Ebony,

Excellent mastering by the sounds of the intro....loud and clear there
I like the hissing sound layered over the snare roll...effective

first breakdown at 1.15 is smooth enough

the high pitch lead (not the sines) that float around just b4 vox also effective. R u panning them? I f not u could try having them sweep around give them a shooting star kind of feeling

vocals sound great but,, the do you love me line might be considered a bit cheesy on some dancefloors I know/knew

after the 2nd break and proceeding build up i was waiting to be taken to another direction but im not over familiar with trance composition these days...

then the exit..not too long....wise work and some great attention to details...

I look forward to ur next one
