Caution: Girly Thread
Okay, so I decided to take up knitting. I want to be able to make scarves and hats and bags and stuff for my friends instead of buying them real presents hahaha. So I went to Hobby Lobby and picked up some gauge 10 knitting needles and some yarn and I taught myself how to cast on, which I can do pretty easily now, and I can knit the first row after that. Now, I understand how to purl, and I can do it, but the transfer from the needle w/ the knit stiches TO the purl needle is really hard, because the stitch gets too tight and i can't fit the transfer on the purl needle. Does ANYONE know how to keep the loops fairly loose to make this easier? I'm at a loss. I learn so much better by someone actually SHOWING me how, but at this point I'll take a description. I've been working at this for 2 hours, I'm about to give up haha.
I'm a guy so I know zero about knitting but I will say that I think it's cool that you're trying to actually make people gifts instead of buying them...gifts are so much better when thought and time were actually put into them instead of just money.
awww! do u sit in a rocking chair when u do it too?
jk
that's cool to have a hobby like that though. if i had the time and money, i would love to get into painting ceramics...they have this place called "Picasso's" on this little strip called Las Olas Blvd. w/ all these cafes and restaurants and bars in ft. lauderdale and u can sit outside and paint all these premade ceramics...they have mirrors, coffee mugs, shoes (like collector thingies), and you can add jewels and pieces of mirror and glass (like a mosaic)...you can even buy an entire set of dishes and paint them yourself and they will spray it with a finish and stuff so u can use them.
it's really cool. i want to paint this huge mirror they have...it's expensive though, they charge u by the hour, plus the use of paints and then of course the piece.
that's like the one thing i could be creative at...i can't draw for shit, i can't MAKE the ceramics either (i was horrible at pottery in my art class in high school)...i'm always idea-oriented...but painting stuff that's already made, i could definitely get creative with that.
i knew a guy who knitted
and he was a hockey player
ah ha! that's quite cool actually
But I sure as heck don't see myself being that patient.
In regards to your problem have you searched the web?
I didn't exactly understand the thing you were stuck up on but i'm sure you'll find resources online heck even a knitting forum ( www.knittingaddict.com )
in the meantime I found this seems to have a fair amount of stuff
http://knitting.about.com/
oh and interestingly enough the first project on that page is about knitting a sock for an ipod to protect it

ok...let the flames come

i know how to knit and crochet...
i swear my ex used to do that shit and show she showed me...that's the only reason i know heheeh...
anyway, to answer your question. you are tightening your loops too tight. you're right it's a lot easier to show you what i mean, but you need to make looser knots through out the scarf or whatever you're making. if you make a row too tight...the next row the transfer will start to tighten and it gradually gets tighter and tighter till you can't get the needle in...i know you're worried about making them too loose, but really experiment with different levels of tension and eventually you will get it right...

wrong!!! The smallest, most mundane gestures, we may find a kind of grace. Knitting is a spiritual practice, and traces the arc of her discovery with openness and faith. Do not let strength & tighness ruin your knit. It is not the muscle you use to pull the thread, it's the artistic movement of the hands
Knitting is more than a metaphor; it is tangible, hands-on proof of the inner-connectedness of all living things. Time is the key! Take it slow & relaxed & let your hands get into a nice gentle rhythme.
awww! knitting! i learned to knit when i was in the hospital last year!! it's actually funny, because when my grandma found out, she was really happy.. haha.
i'd get frustrated when i'd accidentally ruin the rows or whatnot and they'd come undone. i swear i started over about 3 times.
and now i haven't picked up a knitting needle since i left the hospital. which is too bad because i was so enthusiastic about it before. i wanted to make a little sweater for my pups.
but sorry i can't be of help!
Shit Jason now I'm really worried. This is re-dick-a-licorice.
