The Grendade That Wasn't

A grenade tossed into the crowd during President Bush's speech in Tbilisi, Georgia, last week was live and was a threat to the president, but "simply failed to function," the FBI said Wednesday.

The grenade landed within 100 feet of the podium, endangering Bush, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and members of the crowd, FBI agent Bryan Paarmann said in a statement. The grenade did not detonate, and Bush and his aides did not learn of its existence from Georgian officials until two hours after they'd left the country.

Bush capped a five-day visit to Latvia, the Netherlands and Russia with a stop May 10 in Georgia, a small country on Russia's southern border. Bush extolled Georgia's move toward democracy in a speech in Tbilisi's Freedom Square. Saakashvili had earlier estimated the crowd at 150,000. The podium Bush spoke from was shielded by thick protective glass on two sides but not in front.

Paarmann said U.S. and Georgian authorities analyzed the grenade and are continuing their investigation. The grenade, which was wrapped in a tartan-colored handkerchief, failed because the impact on its blasting cap was too light to set it off, Paarmann said.

John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, a defense policy group in Alexandria, Va., explained that the cloth around the grenade apparently constricted its handle and prevented it from exploding.

Bruce Jackson, an American working with the White House advance team during Bush's visit, said it became clear about 10 a.m. that morning that crowds were bypassing metal detectors set up at entrances to Freedom Square. Jackson is president of the Project on Transitional Democracies, a group working to expand democratic institutions abroad.

National security adviser Stephen Hadley told Jackson and others minutes before the 1:30 p.m. speech that plans for Bush to shake hands with the crowd had been scrapped, Jackson said. National Security Council spokesman Frederick Jones would not confirm Jackson's account, but Bush did not shake hands with the crowd after his speech.

Asked about crowds overrunning security checkpoints, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Wednesday the Secret Service "takes any number of security precautions" when Bush speaks.

Pin pulled, but rag wrapped around handle simply prevented handle from popping and arming grenade. Heard on news there may have been armed folks in the audience as well awaiting the grenade explosion as a cue to cut loose. Also heard grenade hit some girl in the head, but other than that, then no apparent injuries. Makes you wonder if things actually went according to plan. Would've been a gun battle with Bush security cutting loose with heavy fire.

It would make you wonder on many levels, first off the local security officials secret police army etc, and secondly Bushs own security people, i know when he visited Ireland last year (it was only for 1 night) that nobody without security clearance could get within a 12 mile radius of where he was staying, and preparations for his 1 night visit took months and were secret, and involved thousands of Irish police and troops and his own security personnel.

Is georgia one of those states that Russia is against like Chechniya?

Personally i cant stand bush. Yet i still wouldnt want that grenade to go off, too many innocent people would be killed.

Georgia is an independant ex-Soviet country in the Caucuses, just above Turkey, with Russia to the north and Azerbijan to the East. It's considered by some to be part of the Middle East and has an Muslim population (hence the anti-American sentiments there)

Besides the definition that was already given, Georgia does border Chechnya and has seen significant numbers of refugees from there, so it is possible that maybe Bush wasn't the main target. Glad that thing didn't go off!

Sorry my post might not have been clear. I knew where Georgia was and its history. Its just when i read the title first i immediately thought the US state rather than the country.

According to Janes' defense weekly, that grenda has a range of ~20M.

The grenda landed 25M away from the President.

Even if it exploded, he was behind an armoured glass shield.

Nonetheless, Secret Service got a lot of answering to do.

Tell me about it. First they let in a male prostitute in on press conferences for over 2 years on a day-pass only (refused a congressional press pass), which is completely unheard of, has no journalism background (among other things in his highly questionable background), and a healthy number of check-ins and check-outs by this Gannon/Guckert guy going unaccounted for,

...and now this. Makes one wonder, don't it?
