EP3 Screening Problem Turns Ugly in Kentucky
Posted By Britany on May 19, 2005
So far we've been reading about some (relatively) light-hearted reactions to problems in theaters, but a midnight screening in Kentucky didn't go so well. Darth Nate writes:
I had a small bit of news from the midnight screening of Episode III at the AMC Newport On The Levee 20, which is directly across from Cincinnati, Ohio.
My wife and I left with mixed feelings about the screening. The movie was showing on all of the theater's twenty screens. They did a good job of making it an event, offering popcorn, hot dogs, and sodas at $1.00 each, and letting people duel with lightsabers and so on, as another person has said.
However, as soon as the lights went down and the AMC advertisement was displayed the film rolled so that the bottom half of the film was at the top of the screen and the top half was at the bottom of the screen. The crowd was very unhappy, one person covering up the projector window so that we would not see the movie incorrectly. The error lasted through the opening crawl and a couple of minutes into the space battle at the beginning of the movie. The crowd seemed on the verge of riot, and two policemen came in to accompany the manager who nearly pulled a guy out who was screaming obscenities. As the manager left, I stopped him and asked if they were able to restart the movie and he told me that was not possible due to the way the projectors work. He apologized profusely, and said that they would have free passes to give out after the movie was over. Following the movie, people were positioned at the exits distributing the passes.
Finally, they got the problem corrected about halfway through the opening space fight and people settled down. Unfortunately it ruined the beginning of the movie and gave it a bit of a negative feeling.
All in all, I think they handled it relatively well. They made it a very festive event and offered passes to everyone when it was all over.
The same thing happened to the theater beside us as well, where the same free passes were offered.
People who take fantasy movies so seriously are losers.

wow...that's lame. what went wrong exactly? 2 mins of the movie were "ruined" by a projector mistake? better that happened in the beginning and that they caught it rather than have it happen somewhere in the middle. now THAT would have caused a riot...of course i think police batons > toy light sabers
I know some people get real hyped up about movies like that but they gotta understand that mistakes like that are going to happen...I've heard of stuff like this happening before and almost always the movie goers are compensated with free movie passes.
I feel let down, I thought "turned ugly" would mean a riot, and all that heppened is someone swearin...most disappointed

LA riots was about it.... we had people fighting over sofas at Ikea....
I bet if they offered free kentucky fried chicken dinners that would have settled the crowd down. ![]()

I dunno fucking up a film is well anoying. I'd be pissed off having watched half a film and it fucking up. I'd want more than free passes I'd want free food and atleast 2 free passes (usable on other stuff too).
i'd agree i'd be pissed too if they fd up my movie and wouldn't rewind it.
I went to the opening show (Thurday or Friday morning at 12:01 AM) of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood when it came out in Dec. of 2001. The film went without a hitch until about 10 minutes left when the Uriki found the group and attacked them. This is when the film seemed to catch fire or something because the screen seemed to melt away and we weren't able to see the ending. The crowd was undoubtedly not happy. We stormed out and complained and the managers calmed us down by giving us free tickets.
Here's where it gets strange. A couple of us snuck into the other showing which began about 30 minutes after ours did and stood at the side entrances to watch the conclusion of the film. At about the exact same scene as in our show the film at this showing also caught fire and we were like
! Strange shit.

during our midnight viewing, the important scenes at the end had problems (after the lightsaber duel); the video stopped showing, but the audio kept going. after a minute, they turned the lights up and started to play those ads that are showed before previews start. obviously people were very unhappy. there was a mad rush to go to the room that started 15 minutes after our room.
it's a little annoying to have to watch the most revealing parts of the movie standing up. i'm gonna try and get a refund tomorrow... no managers were around the night of the premiere, and i've had no time to go back to the theater
