I've not used it, but I've read reviews in Future Music and they completely rave about it. Very user friendly, very powerful, and they even go so far as to suggest that live's method of sequencing and arranging may well become the standard.
I'm very interesting atm of trying out the demo, because it sounds like it could be a great tool for production (and not just doing live sets like sasha is doing )
i believe pendulum has been playing with it, so he'll be able to comment.
Doesnt support mp3's is a pain. Apparently updates will allow this in the future.
there is a demo you can try out, i downloaded it but couldn't be arsed doing anything with it. the tracks have to be .wav format i think and you have to go through each one and set some kind of waypoints or something in them so that could be a pain. otherwise just try the demo and see what you think!
wtf live is brilliant. try this multiple choice cosmo-style test.
a) if you've used cubase before and thought it was cool
b) you've used cubase before and found it too confusing
c) you own a computer with an ASIO2-compliant soundcard and want to 'make da beats'
d) you have any interest at all in using your computer to make tunes
if you answered yes to a, give yourself 5 points. if you answered yes to b, give yourself 3 points. if you answered yes to c, give yourself 25 points. if you answered yes to d, give yourself 7 points.
0 or less points: ableton is not for you. stick with winamp.
1 or more points: the force is strong in you! good to hear. now, you should buy ableton live. in fact, don't just buy ableton live, but PM nyquist_theorem, who has not only spent many hours with it, but who will also very likely be able to sell it to you at as good a price or better as anyone else in Australia.
don't even bother with cracked copies, they will work for a period of time but then create major problems. Ableton Live 4.1 is worth every penny.
I hold this software in the highest esteem. I also bought and read a book called "Ableton Live 4 Power" which I have read a couple of times, in addition to the manual several times too so I have my head around some of the possibilities. Some downsides I find are little things like no recently used projects in the file menu, unable to edit multiple clips, just really little timesaver things that will be fixed in future versions. The main problem (or not?!?) is it has hindered my abiltity to focus on arranging as there's way too much fun to be had in the session view. For instance, the grain delay- What a distraction?!? These tools are so incredibly intuitive, powerful, and useful for being sonically original, that they suck all your time away in experimenting, that is if you are as vulnerable and weak as I am!!! So that's the only problem I have with it if you'd call it a problem!
Will be getting a beefy laptop shortly too... then:
Can someone explain what Ableton is / does??

Originally posted by marsh sorry to be obvious, but www.Ableton.com there's quite an apt description on the site. Otherwise, you could say it's a Midi sequencer, VST host, with a very sexy audio "warp" engine capable of immense flexibility including applications such as composition/production of music, LIVE performance of it, live remixing, mashing up, dj'ing.. etc.. it's just the absolute BOMB!!!

Unless you had something else in mind?
"Ableton Live 4 Power"
posted a PM, wrong place, my bad, though yes, ableton is mad, get a copy and straight away u'll see its potential!
Hi Guys,
Great thread. I've had a bit of experience with LIVE. Its an amazing tool, and I also get to see Sasha use it once a month here in LA, as he has a residency here.
From a DJ perspective - its a way to play DJ sets live. You essentially have the software on your laptop and have (ideally) a firewire drive with AIF or WAV files of all of your tracks. Then you simply drag and drop your tracks into different channels on LIVE and the software does the rest, including beatmatch. This might sound bizarre since beatmatching is usually a common element of learning how to DJ, but LIVE actually goes well beyond that. You can cut, copy, paste, sections of audio for instant remixes, add VST effects to certain part of the song, and much more. All in all, its a very powerful tool that I think is going to completely rule the market in the coming years.
I hated that essential mix, it sounded like one 2 hour long prog mix [as in a mix between two songs, not a mix as in set], but that being said I'd still like to see what this setup can do.
Somehow, I find it hard to believe that you can create great music on the spot, but the hype surrounding this thing makes me wanna see the extent of these 'on the fly' things as well as how user friendly it is.

Originally posted by marsh It's great you do have an open mind, because playing live can be a really exciting visual spectactacle, and open up HUGE possibilities for improvisation, such as dropping in loops, acapellas, and doing custom arrangements (prolonged or shortened depending on what's called for). *Dance floor dying in a breakdown? - slap something in, tastefully of course (this comes with time/practice), and you have their attention again etc.. just a small example.

Originally posted by Sly_Guy So it's $60 for an all in one tool, essentially. That seems pretty quality to me. Is there any shareware version or an online spot where I can see it in action? And another thing, about this control board it comes with, what's the quality of that like? Can I subsitute that for my own mixer, since I'm in love with my vestax PCV 275...
But this software doesn't work with .mp3's yet does it? And there are plans for it to have mp3 compatability correct?
I think I might wait for the next version if I do plan to buy, but I have to find somewhere to check it out beforehand.
I've seen soundcards 4 times as good as that, for half the price.
Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
