Unhappy Windows Help PLEASE!

I have a friend who had an HP desktop, I have built her a new computer, and would like to use the Windows XP Home edition license from her HP on the new PC. A totally legit license transfer (since technically it isn't leaving her posession) However HP doesn't give you a Windows Disc, you cannot use the Recovery CD's on another machine, and the Win XP Home disc that I downloaded isn't accepting her product key

If anyone knows what I can do to make this work (How to make a cd that will work with the PKey?) I would be most grateful

Thanks.

lol, I would totally do that (as usual) but I don't want her to run into any prob.s if (when) MSFT implements the infamous Windows Genuine Advantage (i.e. Validation) for updates And no, Linux / Unix != an option.

I think you can just call windows and get a new activation code. I'm not positive though.

Activation isn't the issue, it's the fact that a regular Windows Home Edition (OEM) CD doesn't accept teh product key I think that HP has it's own PID scheme, but I don't know what it is / how it works <- Again *cry*

keys are good and dandy, I have many, incl. the handy dandy keygens, and Serials 2000+ But.... FUCKING "WINDOWS GENUINE ADVANTAGE" ! If your key != good by MSFT; you != getting updates *tear*

This saves you money (sorta), saves the computer company money, and microsoft makes more money when you want to get another computer!

My understanding is that you are buying a computer that just so happens to include a custom, preinstalled version of windows, that is still governed by Microsoft's EULA (Which I don't think they would willingly lose control of) therefore, it should be transferrable... I'm thinking of calling MSFT Tech Support, weaseling my way to a person (since they direct tech calls for HP etc. TO HP etc.) and asking them...

Just act like a clueless c*unt and keep whinging they'll crack. Just talk about how you upgraded because you want to buy an internets and your last one wasn't good enough to install an internets. And say "but why?" alot. Unless it costs money.......

Posted by Orbax on May-24-2005 04:29:

wait...can you run any command lines?

so like the regular fckgw ish isnt working, but ...

so you get into HP activator and it says invalid HP key?

why dont you make it a slave drive on your working computer, format it, and then put it back in and install windows into your HP box without it having HP shit on it

Posted by the-un-named on May-24-2005 04:30:

That is the tentative plan, stupid MSFT having business hours.... at least there is a 3-hour favorable time difference

Posted by Orbax on May-24-2005 04:32:

but my point was if you can get into the Ms oobe timer you can reset the activation and input a new key, but if youre locked in install, youre most likely screwed as its a registry key.

I wouldnt waste your time messing around with it. However, my new HP box accepted my old windows key just fine. so just format

I'm not putting it on a new HP box, a new custom box

...anyway... I found the solution I believe:

The restore disk is essentially an XP Home disk. The only thing that will happen when you install the stuff from that disk onto her newer comp is there will be a nice hp logo in the my computer properties. But microsoft may have some beef about that. Is what I do when I upgrade my computer significantly (new mobo) I call them up with my key, they look in their key database for that key and they get a print out of your system requirements. If you can give them enough information about what your system was like theyll just delete the signature they have of your computer then when you go to reinstall and reactivate it will work like a new activation and install. Thats my $0.02 anyways.

Try reformatting the HD clean. Remove any HP proprietary crap.
