Original Cafe del Mar (where to find)

i'm new to trance.

i just heard one of the 3-n-1's mixes of energy 52's cafe del mar on a dance mix cd (one of the circuit party sets - which stink generally imho). i found and bought the cafe del mar ep remix cd. it has a number of remixes on it. i've searched the net and can find a lot of remixes - i just can't find the original.

does an "original" even exit?

the "kid paul remix" is on the above mentioned cd but is this the original "mix" or, as it implies, a "remix"?

if so, does anyone know where i can get it?

thanks in advance

Afaik the original was never released. The Kid Paul Remix and Cosmic Baby's Impression are therefore as close to the original as you can get.

Someone here will probably have the full story, at least I hope so.

This has been asked a million times before and i've told this as many times.

Original Mix (6:22) from around 1991 does exist but for some reason was never officially released on CD or 12". I don't have it either.. anymore, i once had it on tape tho but i've lost it. Paul 'Kid Paul' Moormann and Harald 'Cosmic Baby' Blchel dumped the original soon after it was made but due to demand from friends and fellow DJs after they had heard the original somewhere somehow, Paul & Harald were almost forced to dig it up. So they reworked it and made their own views of it and finally after a pretty long while.. Caf Del Mar mixes got out in early 1993, Kid Paul's & Cosmic Baby's mixes backed up with Kid Paul's alternate version, Peace Mix and Ralf Hildenbeutel's Porte de Bagnolet Mix. Soundwise Kid Paul Mix is closest to original even if not exactly the same. So not surprisingly, Kid Paul Mix is nowadays known as the original.

Three'n'One Remix of which many falsely think as the original, came out in 1997 along with mixes from Solar Stone, Universal State Of Mind, Josh Abrahams (Aussie release only) and Oliver Lieb. Ivan Mix is also by Lieb and is a bit darker take on it.

In 1998 came out my fav version, Nalin & Kane Remix, flipped with Hybrid's breaks version.

1999 came out the 'US Mixes' by Deepsky and Pure Nova & DJ Eyal Project which both were quite disappointing IMO, was expecting much more from Deepsky.

In 2000 got limitedly released Michael Woods and Humate trancey ambient mixes, both getting bigger releases a few years later, in 2002.

As mentioned, in 2002 got Michael Woods' splendid trancey ambient mix finally released officially, backed up with new mixes from John '00' Fleming and Marco V and Three'n'One delivered their subtly updated '97 mix.

2003 got very limitedly released Kid Loops Remix (again for those damn Aussies only ) which is very similar to his mix of L.S.G. - Netherworld. The new remixes (Justin F, Kenny Hayes, Neo & Barbwire) and remakes (Fragma - Man In The Moon *cough*) released since then aren't worth mentioning.. they are all rubbish. Below a list of all mixes i've bothered to dig up.

Yeah, i actually might stink a bit because i've been doing some gardening lately. But i didn't think it would get that far. You must have a dog's sense of smell or something. Hey, now i got it why you are always snooping everyone's butts..

Wasnt the Kenny Hayes remix never realeased as a full track? think it only appeared on a mix cd, Floorfillers werent it? I quite like the track

I never liked that one, not even a bit, it's simply horrible IMO. But i guess it wasn't released officially then.. i remember seeing whitelabels of it here and there sometimes last year.

whew!

now that the dust has settled ... what are good on-line sources for trance in general?

i just purchased 2 cds with only cafe del mar remixes and am considering another on ebay with only red sun rising remixes ... but are there mp3 download sites that lean toward trance?

i saw a lange remix of red sun rising on walmart's music download site (of all places!) but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of other sites?

Kudos for the detailed history. This was one of my original "hey what the fuck is that" tunes, back in the day.

I wonder what the connection to some early SFX may be... I believe it is Hypnotica, or Reaching Out, or maybe Butterfly Trip that sounds very much like Cafe Del Mar at some points... if you enjoy the old trance styles, do yourself a favour and dig up early works by SFX. The group later re-arranged as a name you'll probably know: Astral Projection

I'm beginning to wonder how many times you already told this story, poor bastard

According to Cosmic Baby there is no 'original' unreleased mix, but this is what he told me when I asked him on his website last year....

Harald Bluechel aka Cosmic Baby about Energy 52 and "Cafe del Mar"

Paul & me met the first time in 1989 at a club, where he did one his first DJ-sets. We became friends and started an intensive creative exchange, while working on a vision, we shared: Transforming our love & enthusiasm to the starting techno-house into truely independent, significant musical statements. Together and as solo-artists.
A great exchange of abilities began: I became his „musical teacher“, he showed me the structural elegance of aesthetical efficiency“ in futuristic dance track-arrangements.

In Summer 1990, we went to Ibiza. Our favourite place to be was the „Cafe del Mar“. There, we enjoyed the evening-hours in company with beautiful music and people, who where quite different from the mainstream-club-crowds.

In Autumn 1992, Paul returned from another Ibiza-vacation. He told me about a certain piece he listened at the „Cafe del Mar“, he was electrified by. We found out, that it had been music by Wim Mertens, a composer, I highly adore.. We decided, to take his „Struggle for pleasure“ as inspiration for a very special piece to create.

Between September and December we worked highly concentrated and acribicly on the composition. Our common goal: every entire detail of the piece supposed to become „excellent“ - no „that`s already o.k.“- compromises to be made!

Finally in January 1993, we produced the two original versions at the studio with the engineer Jens Woynar. Afterwards we were in serious negotiations with „Eye Q“-records. In the end, they oddly realeased „Cafe del Mar“ without having our permission: so, we went to court, the record had to be withdrawn from the shops. A big dilemma for us: the piece became THE anthem right after beeing played by the DJs for the first time – the people couldn`t buy the record, though...

Since „Energy 52“ is Paul`s project, the piece „Cafe del mar“ however composed by the two of us, we decided, that Paul alone should be responsible for all following negotiations. Four years later (!) the Hamburg based label „Superstition“ made the first „official“ and authorized realease, followed by a bunch of further remix-releases, which all became highly successful. Unfortunately, the record company labeled the wrong credits in the beginning, which was corrected after some time.

The correct credits are:
-for the original versions (kid paul mix , cosmic baby`s impression): „composed & produced by Paul M. and Cosmic Baby“
-for the following releases: „composed by Paul M & Cosmic Baby“, produced by Paul M.“.
