Dunno Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines?

Posted by eye_03 on May-27-2005 08:55:

so blind people can drive up to the atm and get money out.. i dont see whats wrong there

Posted by BluEyedDception on May-27-2005 08:57:

Confused

cuz you know....blind people who are DRIVING need to be able to get money....something about that doesn't quite.....match.

Posted by LiquidNitrogen on May-27-2005 10:49:

You can help drive a car for your blind friend to the ATM.

Posted by Orbital32 on May-27-2005 11:04:

so blind people in the backseat of the driver can pull out money without the driver looking at the pin. That's what i do. I been blind all my life. Anyhoo, anybody see hitcher's guide to the galaxy? pretty cool movie.

Posted by LiquidNitrogen on May-27-2005 11:09:

i said "friends" you inconsiderate :-p

Posted by Moral Hazard on May-27-2005 13:10:

dude, why do they put brail on bank machines at all.... have you ever seen an ATM with a brail output or verbal prompts... NO... so how the fuck are blind people supposed to know what they are supposed to do and when?

Posted by LiquidNitrogen on May-27-2005 13:19:

Blind ppl are much more smarter then we all think, they are prolly the fastest learners. They can learn combination of steps to operate from some one first, and then mimic the steps again.
Usually ATM machines do not behave erraticaly, so very much possible to be used by a blind person (though i don't know how many blind ppl actually uses the ATMachine practically)

A better answer is here

From:
http://journals.aol.com/jevanslink/...er/entries/1812

AND NOW FOR THE FUNNY VERSION

Dear Cecil:

The question of why they have braille on drive-up ATMs once showed up in the Internet Oracle a couple years back (you could probably search the Oracle archives for it), and the answer was something like: "Because the dog can't be expected to drive and use the ATM machine!" --Rishi Fish, via AOL

Dear Cecil:

That's right up there with: "Why don't blind people bungee jump? Because it scares the heck out of the dogs." --Seal TX, via AOL

Problem is that not all ATMs give the same instructions in the same order.

How dense do you want to sound? Good grief. Blind people are people who simply cannot see. So this could mean the blind guy living next door too you might be the smartest man you've ever met, or it may also mean he is the thickest. Which ever category he falls into, you can rest assure that his level of vision is a factor that has fuck all significance on this. But let me ask you this, if a blind person all of a sudden regains their sight, then does they're ability to 'learn fast' all of a sudden become impeded?

Posted by jonze on May-27-2005 13:44:

what if the guy is blind because he stared at the sun all day and burned his eyes? not too smart of a guy.

Being smart here wrt to the topic implies that a blind person can adapt to new surroundings faster then us guys. They are much smarter then what we think they are. They learn the new techniques faster to overcome their shortcomings.

I'll say a blind person has a better sense/feel of the things around then You and I. Atleast i can't walk properly in a room without lights turned on !!!

You are so thick it's unreal.

Infact, when I read what you have to say it reminds me of the following bash.org quote.

(kritical) matts: bikes go faster than cars...a bike at 60 mph is a lot faster than a car at 60 mph
(matts) kritical: um no...
(kritical) matts: um yes
(kritical) my sisters sport car at 60 mph goes faster than my dads explorer at 60 mph
(kritical) a bike at 60 mph will blow by a car at 60 mph

mentalbarter you're an unoriginal douche. this is your third "why do...?" thread in a couple of days. Do us a favor stop posting these shitty questions that you grabbed off of a web site for morons.

acatually the reason is this....they don't build the ATM components differnetly for drive throughs/walk ups. its the same essential machine (pin-pad, computer, etc...). the only thing that changes is the cabinet they put it in. its much more cost effective for the company building the ATMs to build only one type vs building ones made for drive throughs and one made for walk ups

Pfffff... As if we wanted a logical answer to this thread.

I think what our friend here is trying to get across is that many blind people are more adept than the average person at memorizing a specific sequence of actions to produce a desired result without the use of visual prompts or reference points. This should come as no surprise - it isn't that they're smarter, or faster learners in general - it's that they have a lifetime of practice doing exactly that whereas people who can see just go ahead and use prompts and reference points because it's more effective and efficient and, therefore, never really develop this particular talent to the same level that a blind person would.

sorry, won't happen again

a manufacturing company would not waste the time and/or money to create a seperate keypad for drive-through ATMs.
