The police of L.A.

Yesterday I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop for going 85 in a 65, i was on my motorcycle as well. First of all, who doesnt go 80-85 on the freeways here????

Well I just moved to L.A., so do they target motorcycles? And are all the cops as corrupt as this one? The guy pulls up next to me and yells "pull the fu#k over mother fuc#er!" This freaked me out, i have never heard a cop say those things. So anyway, the whole time he is just cussing at me, and gives me a ticket. So the question is...

Is there anything I can do to get out of this-
1. I was going with the flow, slighty over when I passed cars.
2. It is my first ticket in California
3. He treated me like a criminal when all I did was speed (profanity, name calling).

L.A.cops suck.

there's no way of getting out of doing 20 miles over. just cuz everybody does it doesn't mean it's legal sucks, but that's the truth.

you can file a complaint for the name calling...but nothing is going to happen to him.

Well I am the Queen of Speed so there are ways of getting out of the speeding ticket.
1st you need to set a court date and fight it! If the cop was yelling at you like this you can use that in your case. They have no right to talk to you like that. How long did he talk to you before/ after the ticket??

i dont like LA cops either, and i ride as well, i just keep an eye out for them at all times. Make sure to mention in your report about the name calling and such. F him.

Posted by JohnnyMonsoon on May-31-2005 19:32:

Sorry to hear that! I always hate to see fellow riders get nailed. But remember, if you really were speeding, ya can't blame the cop, although he shouldn't have talked to ya like that.

First off, hire an attourney if you don't want it going on your record. I know tons and tons of people who have gotten off tickets much worse than that. I have my attourneys phone # memorized. He charges a $250 one time fee and if he doesn't get you off, you don't pay him. Thankfully I've only had to use him once but I have buddies who have used him 4 or 5 times so far this year alone.

Second, I'm not sure how long you've been riding or more importantly what kind of bike you ride (I have 2 gixxers, one pictured below) but sportbikes are one of the biggest targets anywhere. Here in Washington they automatically hate you if you ride one because they know you can outrun them if ya want and they view us all as irresponsible menaces to society

So the bottom line is,
Should you have been given a ticket: yes
Can you get out of it: yes
Can you do much about the name calling: not really but you can try

I laid this one down in Feb and it will be out of the shop sometime this week.

Good luck and let us know what the result is!

Welcome to LA.

First of all like Orbital posted, just cuz everyone else is doing it doesn't mean it's legal.
Memorial Weekend and any other holiday weekends gets more cops out looking for drunk drivers and any other traffic violators = Speed kills. Doesn't matter whether it's your 1st or 4th ticket here in CA, you still need to obey all traffic laws etc...

I see "Traffic School" in the future for you. That's probably the only thing you can do to keep your California driving record clean.

So where did you move from Derosas? How would you have been able to GET OUT of this traffic ticket if it had happened over there?

Posted by liquidmist2001 on May-31-2005 20:04:

man, cops here will pull over just about anything, as long as it's got any kind of wheels...

although i don't ride, i've been pulled over in my car 5 times in the last 3-4 years

two that i went to traffic school for so there's 3 on my record, with two of them about to come off.

one of them was an entirely bullshit ticket, i was going 75 in a 65 and i got pulled over for that....and another i was behind three other people going faster than i was and i still got pulled over, my car probably had something to do with this, at the time i was driving a 3000GT

but yeah, cops are dicks and everybody knows it. you could try to fight the ticket in court, if the cop doesn't show up to argue his side, then the ticket doesn't go on your record, you only have to pay the court fees...

Posted by SeventhSense on May-31-2005 20:30:

I stay under or around 80 and I havent had a ticket yet.

Posted by Carriegsxr6 on May-31-2005 21:17:

two word sweetie: TRAFFIC SCHOOL! Dont let that jerk mess up your points cause he was having a bad day. If you take traffic school, it wont show on your record.

Posted by Zombie0729 on May-31-2005 21:19:

cops in the larger counties of California have huge quota's they have to meet every month. thats why we all hate 'em

Posted by DjWoody on May-31-2005 21:31:

if it makes you feel better, a month ago I got a ticket for going 100MPH on a 70 zone.!!!! That's wreckless driving and I could've gotten my car taken away. The cop wrote a lower speed to hook me up, otherwise, there goes my car! Oh, the funny thing is, that it was a freakin SPEED CHECKED BY AIR ticket! Yeap, the damn airplane got me and I had a cop waiting for me ahead in the freeway. I had to pay $230 for it, plus traffic school! gggrrrr

haha, i know this sounds stupid, but i was gonna PM ya and ask if you had or liked em. That sucks it got stolen cause you grow so close to them.

Oh and quick question for you guys in Cali. Whats this traffic school thing your talkin about? We don't have anything like that in Washington, is it like a free pass, well not really because you pay, but a free pass so it doesn't go on your record?

Aye chingon!!! There's no rush when you're coming my way, I ain't going any where.

I bet you felt super special when you noticed the cop awaiting your speedy arrival.

Well I hadn't gotten any tickets in more than 10 yrs til... Freakin Downey Cops and their little hiding spots.
My first ticket I can say that I probably did deserve it but I didn't want to skid in order to avoid the red light. $320+ and on-line traffic school which was GREAT!!!
2nd ticket came about a month after that 1st one. Now this one really pissed me off. I was driving on Imperial Hwy going over a little hill, giving it alittle more gas cuz we all do that, right? Well, the freakin cop is hiding near some bushes in an apartment complex with a freakin radar gun. As soon as I went over the hill I said "OH SHIT!" I only drove a few feet (like 100+ maybe) over the speed limit cuz I wanted to pass up some slow poke and my lunch hr had been over like 20-30 mins ago.
I told the cop I sped up a bit to pass another car and it wasn't like I had been speeding for many blocks, it was just a very short distance. He didn't give a shit and wrote me up. $200+ .
Both tickets happened during my lunch time.
Well I was OK'd by the judge to do another traffic school, a 12 hr course which I need to turn in the certificate by Jun 8. I was told I can't do it on-line and the other thing is I freakin don't have time for a 12 hr course. So.... I see my clean record getting a black mark.

Anyone know of anyone that can get me that 12 hr certificate? I'll pay that person what I paid for the ticket.

yes, it kind of is like a free pass. But you can only use it every 90 days. ;-) You have to take a online corse or a class for a day and then take a test and your done.

and yes, I was soo close to my bike. I just couldnt imagine anyone else sitting on her and taking her for a ride. I was sooo pissed about that. It still hurts to this day. But I will ride again one day, ooooh yes I will ride again.

What? Every 90 days? That's like every 3 mos. That's NOT right. It's usually 18 mos. (1.5 yrs) and it's NOT a free pass cuz you still have to pay for the ticket, the court costs and the traffic class. Nothing is FREE.

Damn that Gixxer is sweet! Ive been riding my Katana for 4 years (clean record untill now), yea, its time for an upgrade, a CBR600rr maybe!

In Oregon I was good at talking my way out of tickets, but this cop wouldnt hear my reasoning, hehe... Oregon cops are too nice.

I think I will try to contest it in court, and hope the jerk doesnt show up. I really can not afford this at the moment. Just one question-

Does having a court date mean giving up the opportunity to take the online driving course? In oregon if you went to court, and lost, you paid everything in full with no chance to get it off your record. Thanks for all your advice!

Normally, you can still ask for traffic school at arraignment time, but if you know that this is what you are going to do, might as well bypass that court appearance and ask the clerk directly.

If you plead not guilty and lose at trial, the judge is not supposed to offer you that option, but I've seen it happen...

If you have time on your hands, I recommend the book "Fight Your Ticket" by David Brown (Nolo).

Posted by ahway26 on Jun-01-2005 10:19:

ok...You will always have a "COURT DATE" on your ticket once you recieved it , usually its one month from the ticketed date. You can always go before the court date and pay for ur tix, once you are there at the window to pay they will ask u if u want to go to traffic school. To appeal in front of a Judge is taking a chance, if cop shows u usually loses , if not u lucked out. traffic school can be taken every 1.5 yrs and no points will go on your record but YES u have to pay for the ticket STILL. 3 points will get ur license suspended for half a yr any add on points will result longer suspention 1-2 yrs.Long time ago if u chose to go traffic school you dont have to pay for ur tix just for the class...money sucking .$%^(*%*%*&
i had 11 points before i was 18 and didnt pay for or apperared in court for any of them.....one sunny afternoon..just got outta classes chillin at my house with my gf at the time. There was a knock on my door and 3 police showed up and asked for me....(i shoulda say he is not here) but being honest i told them i am. They soon took me away to Arcadia police station but right before dat i was on a chase after a robbery in action near the santa anita ave exit by 210. damn police was going in oppsite direction i was swing left N right in the cop car*_* it was fun though, lol. anyways long story short...i was in baldwin park city jail for 5 days and was sentenced 30 days in County*_* i even paid for a lawyer too!! Luckily the County was full at the time and "twin tower" didnt have enough fund. I ended up doing CAL_TRAN for 15 days cause one day in Jail is equal to 2 days outside.Anyways...PAY UR TIX!!

Posted by ahway26 on Jun-01-2005 10:21:

Oh..btw the tix ended up to be 2000+ plus they inpounded my car for 30 days which was running around 800+, lawyer 500+(cheap one), and jail time...doesnt dat suck...man o man...*_*

you still have to go to your court date. Before you see the judge you will go to the clerks office and thats when you will pay your ticket and request traffic scholl. Yes you still have to pay the ticket

Why dont you upgrade to one of the 2005 YZF-R6? They are pretty fat now. I tried sitting on a new one and I was able to touch the floor perfectly, but they have now gotten wider. They have made a lot of new modifications, here check it out:

20 mph over, your fucked. the only thing you have to use is the yelling and vulgarity. Like some said, nothing is gonna happen to him. For the future, you can go as fast as you want, it's not legal, just learn the area before you do it. Always pay attention, if your gonna speed, might as well watch every on and off ramp, rest stops, the best is when they are in the slow lane in front of a fking diesel, watch for that too. I have a question also, to whoever would know. Is there a way to put a radar detector on a bike? I can see a bike like a Goldwing having that feature. I know i can't put one on my dirtbike, lol. Just wondering is all. Goodluck fighting it. I've had better expirences with LA Copps than Ventura cops.

Posted by St. Michael on Jun-16-2005 17:40:

I just don't have that kind of luck with traffic cops, I guess. Sorry to hear that. Last summer I got a ticket on my ZX10R while doing 150+ in a 50 on PCH. All I got was a ticket for 80+.
