Trance and Techno Definitions

Techno is a very minimal genre, lacking melody, and trance is an epic (extreme opposite of minimal) genre made up of mostly melody (as well as some other things), with a slight techno beat underneath to carry the sound to the dancefloor.

The above is a description that I stumbled upon on a random website.

Do you agree/disagree?

discuss.

I dont really care for techno too much (then again Chris Liebing really showed me the power of techno last week) but id gladly agree with the def of trance, while im sure some will go ahead and bash it while supporting how techno is very vast...

how does techno lack melody?

Posted by DjSimonB on Jun-01-2005 02:08:

It's a good enough definition for a n00b, kinda polarised though...

What's best is the stuff in between techno and trance

Dude, i think this topic may have been covered in great depth a few times before

Please use the button

*EDIT* I'm a n00b when it comes to techno, but i have been led to believe that techno contains a greater emphasis on percussion.

techno- no big build ups
trance - big build ups

simple isnt it

Posted by AlphaStarred on Jun-01-2005 03:55:

the difference is that trance sounds more like opera, whilst techno leans towards acid country.

not all trance has big build ups and there are lots of techno tracks with some massive fucking build ups. they usually just dont have some dumb bitch singing at some insane octave about some long lost love in the clouds made out of tears that seem to burn with desire and float in the wind and listen to the sound of goodbye.

btw, its louder than any drum beat.

anyway, seriously, you CAN'T put different types of music into certain catagories Just because it has build up/doesn't.

simple isnt it

Good concise definition. Melody is what makes the trance sound so amaizing, and also to be so popular. I would say its the most popular from the electronic genres.. and has been for a while.

Once upon a time....

techno had melody and trance did not.

I'm serious.

I Agree! For instance, Carl Craig has made very emotional & melodic techno music through the years.

Detroit techno in general is very well known for its melodic elements. It's just different from the hit-you-in-the-face-with-a-sledgehammer type of melodies employed by far too many recent trance tracks.

Posted by Aquarian on Jun-01-2005 16:07:

Techno is often more abstract. Trance melodies often ressemble classical melodies.

By classic, you mean used over and over and over again. yes?

Posted by Aquarian on Jun-01-2005 17:55:

I mean in their melodic structures.

Get your history right son, find the old detroit stuff, that was melodic and was done that way. Ishkur may have written a piss funny guide but the guy does know his shit.

there was a time when techno had melody and trance didn't exist. there was a time when techno and trance both had melody. there wasn't a time when techno had melody and trance didn't, son. somehow i doubt you know your history much more than i do. i know ishkur knows his shit.

Posted by torontotrance on Jun-01-2005 18:58:

trance got going in 1987 and the first stuff did not have melody, techno has been around since probably 1984, it was more electro. So I agree with Ishkur, that there was a time where this happened.
