scratch samples...

or... really, 'the' sratch sample. the classic 'ahhhh' sample for scratching.

where can i get it? i've searched through a couple of scratch records at the local recordstore and have yet to encounter the one i'm looking for. dare i not say it, but it's the one Zabiela shows off in his ALiVE tutorial.

furthermore, any sample collections you guys recommend?

also, any place where you can get em digitally, for for those who like to dabble in CDs? do any online sites carry 'em?

good question about the scratch samples cds.

If you hear of anything let me know Rob

I know I've seen some on ebay .... seem more like breaks and loops these cds would come up when searching for Cdj1000's on there.

check www.futureproducers.com and http://www.denondjforums.com/ why not the pioneer dj forums too

I got a free cd wih my cd deck which has beats, samples and other stuff on it, reckon its got the sample you are after on it.

If no one has a problem with me putting up a link for some people to dl it I wil burn it and sort one out. (not the full disk, just the sample in question)

Also someone posted in a similar thread a while back that they just ripped the sample from the JZ video and used that, not the best quality but it will still work.

well... i doubt anyone will mind such a noble and benevolent action...

i sure as hell won't

all of us looking to mess with a little turntablism trick or two will really appreciate it...

Sorry guys I got a virus on my comp which totally destroyed my hd, I'm not a happy chap to say the least.

Slowly I'm getting everything back on my new hd, later today I'll try and get my recording s/w back on and record the sample for everyone.

One thing I do use that could keep you tied over until I sort evrything out is air raid sirens, do a quick search on google and you should find a few. These are very good imo for scratching and gives you a sound that is not very widely used.

Please be patient, thanks luke.

ps Omega, loving that sig lol

sucks about the virus man. just use a live Linux CD and copy everything to another hard disk. should sort you out well. then, format the offending drive, and reinstall windows.

Posted by niquid on Jun-07-2005 14:10:

check out www.turntablelab.com

perhaps you can find something there, you can also listen to records and this sample is on 99% of all the scratch records.

Posted by Luke Cartwright on Jun-08-2005 13:38:

Ok I have uploaded the samples for the people that wanted them, think its best if you pm me for the link tho guys as they will get milked otherwise.

Would be good to hear what some of the scratchers on this board can do and what types of music everyone scratches to, good or bad.

Me and my mate had a good laugh the other day after watching that Darth Vader video, tried copying that and then scratching out other recognisable themes like a team and rocky then trying to guess what we where scratching out.

I've mainly been trying to scratch over hardish trance and techy stuff, will put a bit of it up later so everyone can have a listen.

Posted by Luke Cartwright on Jun-09-2005 13:05:

Heres a little bit of the scratching I have been trying to learn with the help of my friend. Goes off a little towards the end but with more practise it should get better.

ME SCRATCHING

So come on guys, show me what you are doing with them samples.

Posted by Inertia on Jun-09-2005 16:18:

are you cutting by hand with the fader or using a transformer? if using a transformer effect, you may get a nicer result by setting it to half the time you've got it there. if cutting by hand, well, go twice as fast.

me, i can't cut for shit, but i'm still learning i guess.

Posted by Timski on Jun-10-2005 07:13:

Thats got the fader written all over it... good work man... anyway The transformer effect is cheating IMO and should only be used if you cant be fucked or have mastered using your fader... The best effect to use in tablism is echo on a full loop (i have a denon x1500 by the way) and wind it down and chop it up...

Ill get on tonite and see if i can record some good gear for you myself and show some small samples of tunes that give me some of the better scratching breaks... good ones are very few and far between unfortunatly...

Oh yea the best ever scratching tutorial and what did wonders for me is This bad boy

By the way what was that track you were cutting away too Luke?

Posted by Luke Cartwright on Jun-10-2005 09:51:

Yeah just scratching with the crossfader, dunno about going twice as fast tho the damn thing is making my wrist ache just doing what I'm trying atm.

I'm borrowing my mates DNX for a bit while hes got my Mixer and EFX so I'll give that echo thing a try later, do you use echo 1 or echo 2?

The tune is an oldie but a good un, Lunn & Janes - Alive.

Posted by Timski on Jun-11-2005 02:03:

Sorry kids tryed to record some gear last night but iam getting a bog load of feed back when its connected to the pc... i will try a few diff ways tho soon so bare with me.

Use echo 1... with echo 2 I cant seem to think of any practical uses for it.

I like to put it on to the 4/1 bar setting and turn it around to a full loop... on normal beats you cant really tell that its echoing... just sounds normal then turn the knob down to 2/1, 1/1...etc makes a cool speed effect allowing you to do your own buildups. while at the same time use the sampler to play the 4 bars back

i got stacks of tricks if you want to know anymore let me know

Check you've not got your microphone boost on in the advanced properties for play control, I had the same prob after I did a reformat and this was the culprit.

Posted by Allen&Bream on Jun-12-2005 21:45:

You ever watched a scratching video? You move the fingers, not the wrist

Swipe 3 or 4 fingers against your thumb...then make believe the xfader is the thumb and your thumb is a spring

From what I see you're just taking your thumb and one finger and slamming it against the side

You can get the scratch samples Zabiela uses on his Utilities ep out now on Renaissance on both cd and vinyl!
