go CD only?
Right now I have 2 techs MK5's and 1 CDJ-1000. I love my techs, and I love to use vinyl, but I just can't afford to buy records any more, and it's really driving me crazy. I haven't bought records since October, and haven't recorded a set since December, because I'm just sick and tired of the tracks I have. The cost of vinyl is just too much for me at this point.
I'm considering ripping my vinyl to CD, selling my two techs and going for 2 CDJ-1000s. Whenever I get a steady income again, I could buy another turntable or two. But I just don't know... I love my techs, they will always have a special place in my heart, but I really really really want to start spinning again with some fresh tracks.
What to do?
OR, you could just add a cdj or two to your setup and just buy mp3s/wavs off of teh intarweb instead of vinyl.
Would you sell your children? Didn't think so
If you can't swing another CDJ-1000, how about a less expensive deck like the CDJ-200? Then you can start downloading fresh music from places like beatport or djdownloads and start fresh.

save up and get a cdj, save up again get the other one
dont sell the techs man.......you will regret it
Gotta agree on the "don't sell"! I used to own 2 technics when i was 17. Since I was pretty unable to get any records (no job, no credit card, living in Norway and the year beeing 1996... in other words no internet-ordering..hehe), i decided to sell them and buy a double denon cd-deck. But it didn't take long before i started to miss my good old techs. The feeling and last but no least the smell of them made me buy new ones 3 years later. And I never looked back! However, i bought a single pioneer cd-deck a year ago to accomodate my vinyl, but the techs are still my babies.
So bottom line is... If you have them, don't sell them! Get a cd-player AS WELL! I can almost guarantee you will miss your techs.
Oh, and one more thing... Anyone else thinks the smell of a SL1210 is the sweetest smell in the world? And it never wears off
Well the thing is, I already have one CDJ-1000. I can afford a good supply of digital tracks, but I'm forced to mix into a vinyl record every time I use a CD. I have about 70-80 records, but these were all bought in clumps of about 10-12 at a time, and I haven't even bought any since October. Half of them simply don't fit into my current style, and the rest have been used over and over. I'm quite simply bored of them, and I've hardly touched my decks in months because of it.
If I sell my techs, I could afford another CDJ-1000. Don't get me wrong, I love vinyl and my techs, and down the line when I have a better income I will buy another pair. But for now, another CDJ would really really help me a lot.
i say do what will make you happy. we're not the ones that are going to be spinning on that specific setup.
but for me, if i were in your situation, i'd at least keep one deck. theres just something about a track on wax thats damn sexy. I feel like i have more control over it over a cd deck. and the feel of it...mmmmmmmmmmmm
Oops.. didn't read your post properly
I can understand your problem.. And I can't say I have a good solution for you either.. Just try to save up and go for the best value-for-money cd-player you can get your hands on.. Look for a used one on ebay or something.. Just don't let your techs go. Or maybe some kind of pc-controller? Not sure about the cost or the name, but there's a product out there where you hook up your computer to your turntables, play some special time-code records on your turntables and control mp3's that way.. But I'm sure you know about this already
Not sure what producer it was.. Think maybe it's Numark. Then you would get the best of both worlds! Maybe sell your cd-deck instead.. That's the only thing I can think of..Hope it helps. Good luck!
Edited..: The name is Stanton Final Scratch.
And here is a review of the thing : http://www.djsource.co.uk/reviews/software/the-final-scratch-feature-review/
well what i did was i saved up for a pair of cdjs...spent a majority of my $$ on mp3 downloads...and kept buying vinyl to a minimum(2 to 3 pieces a mth)....that way i had lots more to play...and my record collection still increased...
Don't totally convert....
Just sell 1 mk5 and get another cdj that way you'll have 2cdj's and still have vinyl so you can buy rare vinyl shit and still have something to spin it on... so you can still buy vinyl like once every few months.

I'm in the same boat man... With the price of vinyl and international shipping getting so expensive I find myself downloading more tracks now that there are more labels that offer mp3's. I got one sldz1200 now (don't hate... its a good deck if your not a scratch dj) and was thinking of picking up another. Or maybe just selling that and picking up 2 cdj1000mk2's so I'm more used to them when I play out. Although nothing feels like vinyl and that warm analog sound is heaven. Plus some tracks you still get get an mp3 of.
Have you thought about Final Scratch?
or serato scratch live.

Why not sell the CDJ and buy some records that you can spin on the decks?
Just make sure to manage the money. Don't spend it all at once in vinyl. If you manage the money well, you should be able to buy vinyl for at least the next six months.

i dont see why you dont just buy used vinyl. i dont pay more than 2-3 USD for my records. for me vinyl is about the same price as Mp3.
a couple of people had a good point... y not get serato or fs?
I'm still really on the fence about this...
I'm not a fan of Serato/FS and such. I like the versatility of CDs, plus I could never play out on such a setup, as I have no laptop (and theres no way I could afford one if I can't even afford records).
I just bought a car and I'm getting fucked on insurance, so more than ever the odds of me being able to afford a decent record collection or to purely save up for another CDJ are slim. I have Techs MK5's that I bought brand new, they are in PERFECT condition, and they have Shure Whitelabels... I don't see why I couldn't get $400 for each deck. I might be able to sell 20-40 records that I don't especially care for, which could probably bring me $100 at least.
I really love my Techs, but I also really love to spin, period. My one CDJ limits me to mixing with a record at least every other track, and I haven't been able to buy records since last October. My decks are collecting dust because I am simply bored to shit of my tracks. If I had another CDJ, I could easily afford songs off BeatPort or other digital sites. Keeping a decent record collection at this point is simply not an option... I have to pay my car, my fucked up insurance costs, and soon I'll be moving into my own place as well once I get a better job. I really want to spin, but just can't afford vinyl. On the other hand, I love my Techs too...
I'm considering selling one to pay for half of a CDJ, or selling both and buying one now. I can't decide, it's driving me nuts.
Well I was in the same boat. I had just bought about two weeks ago two Technics 1210 MK5s. I had to exchange one of them because the spindle was broken on it and then I got another one. After thinking about it for a little while, I decided to take them all back and save up now for CDJ 1000 MK2s. With stores like AudioJelly, EDM Digitial, Beatport and others, the availability of MP3s at a high quality bitrate (320 Kbps) and them being much less expensive than one record makes more sense.
I mean I seriously doubt that DJs will still be spinning on vinyl in another 5 to 10 years. Sure there will still be those who play old skool stuff on vinyl, but it's the 21st century, and CDs last longer, take up less space, and you can edit tracks and burn them, remix them, produce (play your own stuff) and mix and choose the remixes, rather than having them selected for you on vinyl records, with maybe one or two tracks you don't even like. Who wants to spend $9.99 (online at least...there aren't many records stores that sell prog and trance in the Detroit area) just for one song or remix that you might like on vinyl when you can just get it online now as low as $0.99 to $1.75 (depending on the store..the quality and the exchange currency).
Many labels are now putting their whole catalogues online. Yet another advantage is always having the MP3s and getting stuff that is no longer repressed on vinyl. There are many older stuff that I would love to have on vinyl, but they haven't repressed it, and god knows when it will next be repressed. I would much rather have a case load of thousands of songs, where I can play many different genres and build sets up better, rather than play the same songs over and over on vinyl, as well as have cases upon cases, shelves upon shelves of vinyl records, when all I would need to do is sort through a cd case, and believe me I have plenty. CDJs require just as much skill as turntables, if not more, and offer so much more to do. Yes people will say "its the visual aspect of it" well in my opinion it's just as visual with CDs, and is that really important? isn't the DJs ability to connect with crowds, play good tunes and have good sets and good mixing. Oh and one more point...in the DJ Mag Top 100 of 2004 issue, 13 DJs mentioned CDJ 1000 as being their favorite equipment, and many noted that CDs would replace (or are replacing vinyl) as the medium they use.
Maybe I should sell 1 tech and get a CDJ-800 instead of another 1000?
