one word...... toshiba
was thinking of ASUS aswel as toshiba, both look fairly tasty
budget ~$2500
avoid compaq presario.
once you mac, you'll never go back
Toshiba, Fujitsu or ASUS
I like my laptops pretty small the ASUS M5N are pretty good
you can get them in white too
yeah was going to say asus, i have an ibm that has not failed me... t41p and it it *really* good... even for a pc. it has all sorts of ibm software to look after all the connectivity/wireless/power/bluetooth etc stuff. radeon and gigabit lan.. its def a nice one
but asus is what i was thinking about if i didnt get this one

+1 on the toshiba (from a proud toshiba owner!).
i fully endorse this product, along with sony ericsson mobile and iriver multimedia player!

Im gonna go against the grain here and say stay the hell away from toshiba. Working in the tech field of all the laptops I have dealt with toshiba's have the most problems. On the upside they are usually cheaper, hence why many people buy them.
My recommendations:
go for a Dell, acer or HP. Dell is my personal fav of the bunch, they make great machines.
Go for a Centrino based laptop, they are awesome with battery usage and come with wireless standard. And for graphics card Id recommend the Radeon, 9700 or the newer x700.
HP's are generally very good notebooks! My sister has one and is extremely happy with it.

hmm, i've narrowed it down to this:
Asus Z71V
15.4" WXGA or WSXGA+ TFT Wide Screen
 Intel Alviso915PM & Intel ICH6-M chipset
PCI Express nVidia GeForce Go 6600 128Mb
 Pentium-M 750 1.86G 2M Cache 533MHz Sonoma Mobile CPU
 512MB DDR2-533
 Battery - realisticly 2.5hrs [they think 3-6hrs]
 Weight - ~3kg
for ~$2,500
i know someone who bought a brand new dell.
ugliset thing ive ever seen...
but thats just asthetics.
anyway i have no idea about pc laptops, i have a G4 Powerbook, hasnt done me wrong, wouldnt have anything else.
totally agree with u wade.
from my experience i wouldnt go with toshiba. ive gone thru many laptops at work and would have to say dell is the best. their support is excellent too.. they come out and fix it the same day!
i've got an acer atm cause i got it cheap thru work, but if i had a choice i would def choose a powerbook over pc anyday
