a letter to mixmag

Ok, so the US gets Mixmag a month behind and the place i live means i have to late even longer...sooooooo that means this is a little late:

I just read a stupid letter that somebody wrote in about Emerson at Spudae:

I think that was the lamest letter ever written. I was there, had an awesome time. But for any event in general, as long as the music is good and keeps you going..why are you going to be pissed because you don't visually see a records spinning. Hope you not a TA williams If you are, remember Mixmag called you an idiot! hahhaha

funny thing is though, i felt the same way maybe a couple of years ago, when i first started getting into mixing, i was like "records are the greatest things ever....fu*k cds and anybody that mixes with them"

gradually i began to realize that it isn't all about the equipment, but the atmosphere and the mood created by the music...so big props to anybody that can get those bodies on the floor.

yea, vinyl is teh heavy. gotta have a large quantity of cds with ya.

Why are people such f*gg*ts about DJ's playing CD's? If you really think about it, the CD is a truer format then vinyl. There is no encoding process so you get to hear what is set from the digital master. Vinyl is actually a downgrade from the master since all tracks are created with some sort of digital editing software. Also, what does it matter? If a dj is pounding the dance floor that is all that matters right? I think when a Dj uses a laptop to play that is crossing the line but whether they use vinyl, cd's or final scratch.. WHO FUCKEN CARES!!!!

If you are a dj and dont step up to the plate and start using Cd's, pretty soon you will be playing half ass tracks cuz labels can't afford to press every single track these days. Also, instead of lugging around 300lbs of records, why not just bring 1 cd wallet and call it a day. No doubt vinyl is cool but a dj's performance should not be graded on whether he/she is playing vinyl or cd's.

hate to break it to you but vinyl sounds way better because it has a way higher bit rate per se. CD's are convient vinyl is quality sounding.

First thing, vinyl doesn't have a bit rate, it's analog. It all comes from a digital source. CDs have a 1411 KBps bite rate which is more than enough to equal vinyl, it's indistinguishable to the human ear. Also, CDs don't degrade in quality over time and they don't usually (if it was a clean rip or direct render) contain as much noise due to dust and scratches.

That said I like vinyl better because of the feel and the sound is inexplicably 'warmer'. But in a club environment with hundreds of people it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell the difference.

There have been many other discussions about this, and I don't want to start an argument about that in this thread. I think the most ridiculous thing about this guy's letter is the fact that this guy doesn't realize that it takes just as much talent (or more even) to mix with CDs as it does vinyl.

Thank you! I didn't want to get into it on a technical level but there you go. A vinyl master is only as good as it's digital master. it will NEVER be better. The only time a vinyl product will be better then a digital product is if all the recording is done on reel2reel straight analog never touching any digital cuts. Even then, the human ear cannot really notice the difference unless you have a hardcore ear for that type of thing. One nice thing about vinyl vs cd is that a turn table has infinite settings for the tempo, vs a cdj that is only accurate to the .00. CDJ's still have a ways to go before it can emulate the accuracy of a turn table but I dont think any dj has a problem with that that knows how to mix effectively.

honestly, who cares....as long as the DJ is on point with his mixing and his track selection, it's good enough for me

I think vinyl is more a part of the dj/underground culture than Cd's and it is a little more visual to the audience to see a record spinning. Funny how so many things have come and been said that they would replace vinyl and none of them have.

Vinyl is just about irrelevant at this stage.

A year from now the arguement will be CDs v Ableton.

that really shouldn't matter if you are only using digital sources and cds. They are created at a certain BPM, burnt at it, and played at it. So trying to emulate TT's is futile.

what a fuken dumshit. I think im writing a letter to The Thrillseekers for the same reason. What a fuken moron i used to think the same but then i read up on all that stuff i myself dont spin cds but heck if ppl want to go on ahead. What a moron once again

and cds u can burn and shit no pride in having a rare tune there. But if hold something like that on vinyl its worth so much more value and pride
