I think I have outgrown G&D. They do nothing for me anymore.

The Engine Room- A Perfect Lie

Dave Gahan- I Need You
Sarah McLachlan- Fallen
I can't believe nobody's mentioned Lament yet. Probably their best work. Dub 4 Satoshi, please.

As far as I'm concerned, their sounds are terrible, they do absolutely nothing special, the whole mc prog type sound does nothing special, it just plods. It rarely has emotion (apart from in my memory) and is slow & boring, If you want good slower music, theres funky techno or proper house, this stuff is just a drain on trance, and part of the reason the scene has gone to shit, especially in the UK imo. |

Ian, that was a great post. I am as guilty as the next guy when it comes to presenting opinions as facts, so I felt that was very appropriate. G & D are loved by many, but also disliked by a number of people. Personally, I can say I love them. I've been listening to a lot mixes and music lately, great part of being out of school for the summer, so I belive I can describe what separates their productions for me. Listening to their best songs, take The Engine Room remix, they create an emotional atmosphere for each song. Their songs aren't like a lot of boring prog out there for one simple reason, they have mastered making an emotional track. While I wish they would make more "chill" songs like the As the Rush Comes mix and of course A Perfect Lie, as I believe they truly excell with these songs, I believe consistency in producing excellent tracks should not be mixed with being uninventive. They have their trademark sound, and although they should make more "chill" mixes I don't believe sticking with their sound makes them bad producers.
1. Markus Schulz Feat. Departure - Without You Near
2. Motorcycle - Around You
3. Nicol Sponberg - Resurrection(Gabriel & Dresden Remix)
4. Sarah McLachlan - Fallen(Gabriel & Dresden Anti-Gravity Remix)
5. Gabriel & Dresden - Portebello
It's hard to just pick 5

Yeah the breakdown in Fallen I think is one of their best. Lyrics are powerful too, as with all of their songs.
Alive isn't Gabriel and Dresden, it's just Josh Gabriel.
My favourite mixes of theirs are the ones when they first started out. The ones where they just appeared out of nowhere and threw out quality livesets and a slew of their awesome remixes.
Mixes of tracks like IIS - Muzik, Beber & Tamara - Travelling On, Grayarea - One For The Road, etc.
A lot of the later stuff has been sub-par considering what they're capable of.
I like a lot of their stuff, however Andain - Beautiful Things (G&D's Unplugged Mix) is quite a nice tune, and brings back memories from 2003, cruising to it on Tiesto's Nyana CD shortly after I got my first car.
wave 3
switch
alive
travelling on
mindcircus
for me it will have to be this order:
1. wow - mindcircus (g&d remix)
2. rachel starr - till there was you (g&d remix)
3. duncan sheik - on a high (g&d remix)
i basically like their remixes but not so much their own productions...

Not that I like all their stuff, but G&D have a more varied sound and a lot of their remixes border more on Progressive House or Circuit House rather than the standard "McProg" style that I can't stand (read my user status ). |
Gabriel and Dresden - Portobello / with Dirty Vegas - Days Go By Acapella
that's pure ownage
