R.I.P. to all of the brave young men that we lost on that day.

They are true HEROES in my book!

RIP Men, you are true Heroes and will be remembered until the end of time!

Not that idiot. I mean real stories.

Posted by Jackson on Jun-07-2005 22:45:

Do you mean do we know people who took part in the invasion?
Or are you asking to hear individuals stories of what happened on the day?

My grandad who died before i was born was in the Desert Rats - 8th Amoured infantry. I think they took part in the invasion, but i know he also fought in Italy which was around the same period (Rome was liberated 2 days before d-day)

i have a friend whos grandfather was in the red army. He was only 15 when he entered the war. when the war ended his whole family was dead. His grandpa had a bad life early on.

But then again you werent asking for the eastern front

You mean Operation Barbarossa? I was thinking about doing a thread post on it's anniversary. Hopefully there will be some replies on that come the 22nd.

Not real stories, but I'm an advid fan of WW2 history. I watch the history channel frequentely and read plenty of Keegan, Ambrose, etc., so I've read my fair share of first hand accounts. If you want to see something a bit more commerical (but still very excellent), you can watch the HBO band of brothers series. Every episode is preceded by a first hand account from the soldiers who were actually there that the series attempts to portray.

Do you know what battlefront he was a part of (Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, etc.)?

i know his first combat was in stalingrad and he did fight in kursk. What a lucky man he fought in like the major battles of the 20th century. But if you asked him he isn't lucky according to him.

Stalingrad? wow! If "Enemy at the gates" was at all accurate, that place looked like hell on earth.

He's lucky that he fought in one of the most bloody battles of the 20th century and survived! Also it's somewhat cool, in retrospect of course, that he fought in the biggest tank battle ever. Stalingrad sounds rough. It could have been rougher though ... he could have been a German who faught in Stalingrad .

shit, stuff like that is really hard to understand can really happen... and the russians get way too litle credit for what they did in WWII imo...

+1
I dont think the brits get much credit for some of the breakthroughs we had. But yes, the russians were in a worse spot.
Theres so many attrocities from ww" that dont get much publicity, like the Rape of Nanking...reading that stuff made me vomit, literally
