Exclamation Batoru rowaiaru (The movie)

Or actually the english titel is Battle Royale. Anyone seen this movie ? it leaves you with a certain amount of "emptyness" but still some kind of uplifting feeling.. very hard to describe. Easily one of the best movies i've seen..

discuss!

Indeed, this was one of the greatest films I've ever seen, and the director's cut is even better.

I was left with an impression similar to yours: an empty uplifting feeling. It did make me sit back and think for a while about what I had just seen, and I'm now looking forward to reading the book, in order to understand a few things the film didn't cover.

It's funny how either people get this greater impact, or they think it's just gore. In fact, when I got it, I didn't expect it to be so deep psychologically.

Although, like any other piece of fiction, it does cover the "fantastic" in a very surreal way. I mean, how the hell did Kiriyama manage to do that right in the beginning, with the machine gun?

I'm going to see it next weekend - from what I've read, it sounds awful (check Wikipedia to know what I mean). If you want some help finding it, PM me

the 2nd one is kinda like the 1st one thats all i'm gonna say.
you basically know what to expect so it loses alot of its awesomeness.

You take meth in malaysia? You must have quite a pair on you.

the second movie is only really worth watching if you want to be able to say you've sat down and watched both films. its complete turd. the whole film is about the teenagers rebelling against 'adults'. which is all well and good, but don't the little shits realise that soon they will be the thing they're fighting?

utter turd about terrorism and shiz. avoid unless you just wanna say you've seen it

the first battle royale ftw ... the secone one isnt that great.....it kinda takes away from the first one......i didnt like it that much......the whole concept is to kill EACHOTHER off....the 2nd is more about war between 2 groups...

if u guys liked battle royale i suggest SUCICE CLUB .. that movie is juss nutty....this movie gives u the WTF IS THIS MOVIE ABOUT feeling....but still is a good movie

I was going to watch that film last week, but I thought it would be better to take some time between Suicide Club and Battle Royale.

However, all the reviews I've read about Suicide Club were rather negative: there's the first shocking scene (with the schoolgirls) and it's all downhill from there. Except for one person who said the film was about relationships, which would make it interesting to me.

used to. it's not worth all the trouble nowadays.
you'd be suprised man. as long as you stay home you're fine.
freaking cops everywhere. on the spot urine tests at roadblocks,
clubs getting raided, undercovers at events. you're always too paranoid to enjoy yourself.

I didnt think it was 'one of the greatest movies ever' like many people say. I think this might have to do with the crappy subtitles that were on the version I saw so I may have missed a few points. Its defenitely original and messed up though(didnt they give one kid a trash can lid lol).

There were far worse weapons: Kiriyama (the guy who went amok) started with a paper fan

i love how the japanese have absolutely no line or boundaries when it comes to film as an art form...they def know how to delve into some dark, taboo material...

for some other truly bizarre, interesting and fucked up flicks, try some films by takashi miike or kiyoshi kurosawa (not to be confused with akira kurosawa, a legendary japanese filmmaker)...im a big film geek

Just seen it. Compared to the first film, it's got a somewhat different focus, and the beginning is the main problem.

The film as a whole was annoyingly influenced by the events that took place soon after Battle Royale I: The war on terrorism, the collapse of the World Trade Center and, although it does fit the chaotic social context from BR(I), the first minutes stress this way too much.

On top of that, as soon as a classroom is chosen, it's just plain weird: all the deaths you saw before the game in the first film happen almost the same way. Not to mention their teacher: he's plain annoying, and out of all characters, I guess I missed Kitano the most.

However, the film is not all that bad. Kitano's daughter (who, in real life, happens to be the older sister of the girl Kitano protected in the first film) brings the BR(I) feeling back for a while.

Also, if you happen to like politics, BR(II) might be interesting because it tries to show the war on terrorism from the terrorists' point of view. It's far from being deep, but it's food for thought nonetheless.

The reason why I still think the film was worth watching is because of the common traits in the plot (psychology and philosophy wise), and how they were developed differently.

3.5/5
