What makes a good gaming computer?

im looking in to buying a new computer and just want to now what one needs for it to run games of today well. and yes i know Alienwear makes a good one but im looking for specifics.

Make sure you have no bottle-necks in the system. A superfast CPU won't do any good with a crappy grafics card etc. A nice CPU, 1 GB RAM and a good GFX card. Just don't forget the other stuff. Good mobo etc.

a good selection of games is also helpful

Oh, wow. You have no idea what you're doing if you're even thinking about Alienware. I could build a comparable system for half of the prices they charge for their ridiculous crap.

You want at least a 2.4GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and a GeForce 6600GT or better. Buying less than a 6600GT at this point is a waste of money. I'd also be looking for PCI-X in the motherboard (and if you get the PCI-X motherboard, get the PCI-X version of the 6600GT. And, if you can afford it, 10,000RPM hard drives are nice. (Much faster than 7,200RPM.)

A half decent graphics card is a big thing but a lot of ram will make your computer really shine, whether it be for gaming or anything else.

Do yourself a favor - don't buy anything related to Ati.
i hope they're whole factory will be burned in flames including they're peenor sucking graphics cards.

The Radeon 9800pro does slightly worse in benchmarks compared to the 6600 GT, but is still a very good card. As for the rest of the system, as it has been mentioned, try to at least have 1GB of ram (or 512 if you are planning on upgrading soon after), and for the processor try to get around 2.8ghz. With this you should be able to play any game out today or that will come out within the next couple years without any problems.
