Artists using "DJ" in front of their name...

Ok, this is going to be controversial. This is partly why I'm making this post (get people talking, etc), but also partly because I want to know what others think.

I'm talking about both DJs and particularly producers here when I say I believe IT IS UNNECESSARY TO PRECEED YOUR NAME WITH THE PREFIX "DJ". In fact it looks cheesy, sounds cheesy and if you produce and don't DJ (as is quite often the case), it's just a blatent lie!!

I don't see why people feel they have to stick DJ in front of their name - the only other profession who do that (MC's excepted seeing that they use it in a similar vein - same case applies, but obviously "DJ" is more relevant to this board) are doctors, where it is actually an official title (like Captain, Colonel, Sir, etc)... I'm sorry to say owning a pair of belt drive Numark decks does not legally give you letters before or after your name.

Please don't think that I'm objecting to people coming up with creative names for themselves as an artist - on the contrary, having a unique name can really help to identify you and your music, however it doesn't have to start with "DJ"! Just try dropping it... Tiesto did. I think you'll find that 99% of DJ names starting with "DJ" will sound just as good (well, actually better) without the prefix... unless the name's a pun on the "DJ" thing, in which case you should be shot too (I don't care if it's your initals... do you know how many people in the world have the christian names David James, Daniel John, etc? It's not big and it's not clever).

Oh and don't think that I think (keeping up?) that my name's any good. It was actually once voted the worst username on a messageboard, but hey. It's my real name and I can't think of anything cool, currently waiting for that all-changing life experience which will scar me for life with a crazy nickname, which, for some reason, I'll decide to use as an artist name. What can you do...

Of course having that on the start of your name can be restricting... it kind of forbids you from producing (as it says you're a DJ, not a producer, surely?), unless you were just sitting in the corner mixing away while someone else was writing the tune... or maybe people should start calling themselves Producer , Female Vocalist and Guy Who Usually Makes The Tea But Once Moved One Of The Faders .

I hope you can see where I'm going here... mental hospital? Quite probably.

Please vote above... and reply with comments/abuse/grammar corrections

Thankyou please

Next week: why calling yourself can lead to world poverty and famine.

lolz i do see what your on about but i must state for the record, my mother has refered to me by the name D.J. since i was old e-nuff to answer to it. my sign in name is djwright b-c my last name is wright.
dont wory tho, i dont have a "dj name" nor intend to use D.J. i think a "name" will come to me when DJ'ing becomes more than just a fun hobby for me.

Aww man all the credits for this thread goes to mef... Raggy dolls were insane... "dolls like you and me"...

Anyway it does sound rather cheesy when there is a DJ hanging on the front of your name... but correct me if iam wrong but your post was rather hate filled. I of course do agree with you 100% that a name will sound better once the DJ is dropped from the front but i guess it helps remind people that there will be a dj playing there or wherever there going .

Sincerly,

so what about people who put their name BEFORE DJ, ie blah blah DJ

That was kinda comically ironic... no point in having a go about something if you can't take the piss a bit in the process

i hate my "dj" name i think its just gay and stuped haveing dj in front of your name . i just want to drop all that shit and use my normal name . but ive done alot under this name and i think that if i change it people wont know who i am and stuff. any ideas?

Posted by skip on Jun-10-2005 11:07:

dj tisto will always be dj tisto to me at least. IMO it's just a stupid fad not using the dj in front. you can use it or not, i don't care, whichever sounds better IMO. but no dj in front doesn't always sound better IMO. dj tisto is a good example on this one.

BUT i do agree that most of these TA bedroom dj names with dj in front sound hella cheesy. stuff like dj mdma, dj xstacy, dj superphatassyoyoyomix0r0r0r etc. etc.
but sometimes the dj in front works quite nicely IMO.

I think this is something only really done in urban music now. I dont know any Trance DJ's that still do this. But plenty of drum n bass and hip hop ones that insist on doing it. I Personaly don't see the point, but whatever floats their boat...

It doesn't really bother me, but I agree that it is not cool any more to use DJ in front of the name. It'll come back in 2023... mark my words - as will raggy dolls.

If it works for Sammy it can work for anyone.

So my vote goes to all the Dj's.

i think it matters what the name is, for example... im using "Nicholas T" just sounds right like that, not "DJ Nicholas T" But "Tiesto" sounds better with "DJ Tiesto"

Cheers!

Sad Sack and Back to Back were good, but Hifi was the best.
