The future of trance production

So what do you guys think the future of trance music will be?

Can breakdowns get any longer?
Will acid make a comeback?
Will the develop the super duper saw?
If you took Drum and Bass and mixed it with Psy, what would you get?
Are debates like this pointless?

C'mon, your an opinionated bunch when you want to be.

Discuss...

Cowbell will become more predominate.

"Trance and Bass" exists as some sort of Genre. Mainly by John B... Check This CD Out..

Breakdowns are already long (another site found the longest was 5+ minutes long! Sheesh!)

Acid - we can only hope

Death to the supersaw.

Hopefully generic dutch trance will self implode and producers who make original sounding tunes will gain more following

Keeyah! *throws gas onto the flames*

The 80s synths and male vocals are coming back along with a darker melody. The saw is not going to die but get better. Additionaly rock elements will be infused. No poppy bubblegum stuff just driving rnr. If there's death to anything let it be hip-hop.

trance and bass classic:

Dkay & epsilon- platinum

trance is getting public.. and it shows in radio time/regular nightclub charts and tip xxx list ...

theres couple of trance songs @ top 10 selling singles here in finland..
and once there was proteus- helsinki-london connection EP wich is hardenergy/freeform record

so

if trance is getting totally maintsream in 1-3 years, i belive we go (if you dont then i do)back to roots.. underground sound.. harder faster and more experinmental

Personnaly I try to have more frequently short breaks in my sets and in my productions... because I'm tired of all this fucking long breakdowns which stop the dancer when he's just tripping on the music.

Acid has already mae a come back... but not in trance...it' will perhaps be added in some trnace productions in the future.

I don't want to listen a Super Saw anymore!!! Nice sounds but really not original... Trance is not original these days.

It will be some Psy'n'Bass? Drum'n'Psy? lol

classical trance

werei think trance is going is ..... i dont know if any of you are into soundtrack type stuff... composers like han zimmer. but ok these guys get paid shit load for composing and would never even think of doing something as repetitive as dance music but if they did i think there tracks would be so powerful that the word trance would be taken to a different demenision.

Drum and Bass with Psy? Listen to the Compilation "Broken" by timecode. Its one of the best comps I've heard for a long time. Or the album "Mind set" by Acid Rockers. It's after all psychedelic breakbeat. Like I said, I could imagine it will become the future of Psy. I dont know if this will also be the future of Trance.
Trance will very soon be divided into "Pop Trance" and "Good Trance". I hope.

In the future we'll be ruled by apes!

were moving on to the supersine!!!

let the force be with you.

Posted by Channel Surfer on Jun-11-2005 05:29:

i agree with isrefel....

composers (and i mean real composers) will begin to take trance to the harmonically involved, highly compostional, neoclassicism it already hints at.

those guys will move up (better start your piano lessons)

and also the guys who are "technitions" and not exactly "musicians" will move up as well.....ie certain techno producers whose music can be a little atonal but the soundsscape just sits so well.....great sounds in a great mix.....a living wall of sounds coming at you......those guys will do well too...

i'm more of the first half.....I can write counterpoint, and four part all day but my actual soundscape still sounds (to me) a little amature....we'll see though i'm on a label now and have some new songs that are absolutely worthy....been a long up hill fight though...

Personally I think Psy is going to own over the next few years. Its going to get more melodic, whilst retaining its creative use of sounds. It'll progress beyond the archetypical 16th basslines and loose some of its aggressive edge in favour or something more danceable and party friendly. A lot of psy is doing this already, but not enough imho.

Either that happens or trance fans will get sick of the supersaw sooner or later. Half of the ones I talk to already are. Producers are going to have to start using new sounds in their tracks. Where are they going to look for them? Psy of course.

If anything, I think trance needs to get more stupid and stop taking itself so seriously. In a market of huge epic melodies and sombre breakdowns, the tracks that are going to stand out are the ones that manage to evoke a different emotional connection other than the ones we have been experiencing for so long.

I hope that trance will become more freeformish over the years because it's quite boring when it's stuck with the structure it has today (everyone has the same kind of intros etc.)

the fine part is that we don't have to speculate about this, instead of speculating we should realize that it's we among others that has the evolution of trance in our hands it's just a matter of being brave enough to not use the same structure as everyone else.

and it's bollocks that the dj's need the structure to be able to mix it, a good dj can mix anything with anything!

Applause.

very well said.

psy gets into a rut too. as does freeform.

303s get rinsed in psy and freeform just as supersaws get rinsed in trance. hey - violin's get rinsed in classical music and orchestral soundtracks. it doesnt have much to do with the instrument itself, more like how its used. i never tire of hearing a good 303 sound. ive listened to fatali's city of god hundreds of times and every time *that* 303 lead comes in. and everytime *that* melodic breakdown fades i break into a grin. ill bet that everyone here has a song in mind where they can listen to it a hundred times and the same thing. the same breakdown or the same build up gets you every fucking time.

course, for every fatali tune that drops a 303 like that, theres 50 others which dont do it as well in my opinion. its in the nature of the volume of art produced that ill love a handful and not care about the rest because its mediocre. after protoculture remixed silicon sound, i just havent ever heard a psytune which has topped it or got me like that tune did.

im not really big on the whole isratrance thing that astrix and infected mushroom are embarking on right now but i guess theres plenty of people that do enjoy it.

if i dislike a supersaw sound or a 303 sound it is most of the time because the producer has failed to impress me with the instrument s/he is using. i think psy is past its peak. its had its defining moment already. which is not to say it wont have another. but psytrance these days has just as many generic, ordinary average, doesnt jump out at me kinds of tunes. pretty much every eskimo tune i listen to is well produced but boring as. theres a couple of alien project cds out there that are just...mistakes. really big mistakes.

if i start to appreciate a different style of music, its normally not because its more 'original' - pretty much every q-tex freeform tune over the years does the same digital piano thing. the same bouncy basslines. it works. sometimes they strike a chord with me. sometimes not. but freeform is no more or less 'original' than anything else. if you end up liking freeform more than trance its probably because you have less exposure to the freeform formula than the trance formula. you have to work it out all over again. thats to be expected really. most of the people here practically study trance. alot of the people here can build alot of trance type instruments starting from scratch - nothing but a sine/saw wave. when you know a tune so well you can write out all the notes, the instrument used, which oscillator types were used and how many and what effects processors are on it, it kind of loses its magic. time to move on.

its inevitable that some people will become jaded and bored with the same sound. thats your cue to move on to something else.

lots and lots of yodeling

TECH TRANCE

MARCEL WOODS, SAM SHARP, MARCO V, RON VAN DEN BUEKEN to name a few.

that is all that i play these days, banging tech trance, fucking love it. Prog doesnt have the power in peak hours of the party, this is the most adrenaline packed trance out there.....(of course in my humble opinion)

Posted by Channel Surfer on Jun-13-2005 07:08:

righto.....that shit is moving up in the world....ever hear Bryon Garlick? he mixes the fuck outta that stuff....

Posted by Oddisee on Jun-13-2005 09:59:

WE are the future of trance production. the bedroom producers of today will be the the ones that take trance where it will go. and i second the death to hip-hop.

peace!

I think music will just go on and never die. What will end is the status that's given to popular artists and DJs. Right now they're treated like gods. As time progresses, and as there's more and more of them, producing music will just come to be seen as any other profession - like doctors, city workers, etc. Think about it; when rock and roll started, there was only elvis, and he wasn't just any musician, he was the king. Now? There's a million elvisses, and none of them are the king.

Posted by Limit on Jun-13-2005 11:20:

Trance will die out(still be played but not on a massive scale). Then when all of use are using these new high tech synths and vst's and it get really boring(like now), some kid will strat to use some cheap ass oldschool equipment that nobody wants to use anymore and rock the house with crazy "new-trance" tunes.

Oh and yes this is the past i'm talking about....in the late 80's and early 90's(very early) digital synths were the shit, then dj's and producers that couldn't afford all that expensive digital gear went out and bought old cheap analog synths that nobody really used anymore and made tunes...thus, trance was born!(BT claims he invented trance...it evolved, it didnt just come to pass one day)

So my theory is:
cheap digital synths + old crappy analog synths = New-Trance

we need to start exploring the tools that are underutilized and labeled as not worthy(by who? and for what?)

get off your damn Virus' and JP fucking 8080's and start exploring new territory(or should I say old synths)...damn I feel like making a tune with a freaking cheap ass 80's happy birthday fucking preset Casio and a Radioshack Moog....that will give you a freaking CONGASAW or two!!!!!

hey what do I know...I'm fucked!

Agreed Limit let's get back to making music with the old tissue box guitar and plastic rice drums we all made back in school Those were the days!

Got my wishes though:

1. EDM will kill hip-hop ('til it dies, maddafakka! Stupid apes...)

2. As someone said, Trance will be produced by composers, I mean real ones, a new Mozart will emerge! And I will be the most famous of them all!

3. Music will be free. Copyleft will kill Copyright.

4. We will get more creative by the day. We will produce tunes no-one ever heard

5. Trance will go public, everybody would want it! (see point 1)

That's about it though...
