VSTi vs Hardware

The battle begins!!!!

I rockon Softsynths are total crap. Even the ones that set you back 350 Euro's. Well, at least they would never beat a good old Nord 3 or Virus. They seem to just sound tinny, and you would definetely never get the warm analog sounds of the Nord.

And let alone the softsynths that you get free with FruityLoops or Logic. The problem with these is that whatever anyone made with the things all sounds the same! Appart from the sound quality I also miss the live input you get from a hardware synth. Fiddling with the filters is just too much fun, and you get to generate your own groove which noone can ever copy.

As far as SoftSamplers are concerned...TOTAL CRAP!!! Try selecting a sample from a list or 1500! You'd be better off farting into a microfone and sequencing that with you're audio sequencer. And pitching a sample up and down by playing it faster or slower, try doing that with a chord on a Wurly.

Only difference is VSTi takes a lot of computer speed, while hardware does not. The sound isn't worse in software than hardware, not anymore anyways. I believe most of todays producers use softwares alone.

And about your hardware-is-better-live-giddle (or whatever) there is something called MIDI-device (rings any bells?). So, to clarify, software is cheaper, hardware doesn't rewuire CPU speed.

Why should there even be a battle? Most producers nowadays use both (I don't think anyone produces 100% hardware anymore), and some even don't use any hardware.

It sounds almost like you're a bit scared to let software come in place of hardware

I use a good mix of hardware and software. I still prefer the hardware synths but they are a bit of a pain to use since you have to record everything to audio. It's great being able to export right from midi (which is why the Virus TI is going to be so awesome... All the advantages of hardware and software). Hardware still takes the cake with effects (reverb etc) as far as I'm concerened. Everything has a place though, use what you like and what sounds best in the mix.

For example, Wim uses no hardware and look at the crackers he churns out! Its all about the knowledge of producing! You can get some numpty who uses all the hardware in the world but if he can't produce with it its no good!

There are a lot of amazing producers that now use only software synths with awesome results. I think a lot of it comes down to personal preference.

Well I got a good discussion going though didn't I? I also use both Hard and software by the way. Actualy I do beleive that a hybrid of the two is best, especialy seeing as how computers are getting faster and faster. Maybe we will see more of the likes of the Nord Modular, or indeed the Virus TI which has a VST interface!!!

good job contradicting yourself.

it doesn't make to much sense for someone who so passionatly hates vtsi's to use them, now does it?

anyways, i kinda agreed with the upper post where its like you seem scared about the transition into software, personally i'm an all software guy (admitadly some purchased and a few cracked in 'demoing' mode for now, but anything i truly like i will eventually get purchased, because a quality product deserves the respect.)

anyways, i love software for one simple reason: SIMPLICITY! i have all the samplers and vst's routed through cubase with a radium 61 controller, and i listen to it on event tr6 monitors. no junk, just the essentials and everything you need in one box (one day two + when money comes my way) and you have infinite possibilities of what you can do. i never feel limited to what can be accomplished.

3-4 years ago i always dreamed about having the big hardware studio, but all that has changed, becasue i feel its completely unnecessary. i have the capability of producing something that could be played in a club from just my little setup. (legally purchased everything would prolly be about $4-5000) and thats a shitload cheaper then a quality hardware setup.
