Smoking ..umm..something Review: Ultra Spin 8.0 @ GUV with M.O/Oscar G/IM and more...

It was so COLD inside!

Ultra Event was nicely packed on Saturady night...

Caught M.O's stellar Opening set for Oscar G, and then left the main room for KH to see The Infected Mushroom; A lot of new stuff that I haven't heard in any of their past Live P.As was performed and it was takin' the Crowd to a dancin' frenzy...went back to the main room and Oscar was droppin' a lot of recognizable Vocal House tracks which would in turn make the clubbers to sing along!

Felix Da House cat had the Drink Massive Pumping to some really movin' groovin' funky HOUSE Music..So did M&S up @ the Skybar which was the Hottest place you could be if you were Single!LOL!LOL!

Pics Comin' up very soon

Strange Night indeed

Well my night did not get off as planned, just as I was getting ready to head down to KoolHaus/Guv my friend Greg relized he could not find his wallet. After tearing my place apart look for it, then went back to his place, and still could not find it. SO he grabbed is old expired drivers license to use as ID, and his Visa bill with the phone number on it to call the credit card company. Then we had to run back to my place to pick up the things we forgot in the rush, by now it was 12:40AM so we grabbed a cab. Used the guestlist line for the first time thanks to John Tang and TA, thank god I had gone on guest list as the line up was huge at that time. Then they did not want to let my friend in with his UofT waterbottle, he finally agreed to leave it outside and pick it up on the way out. Mean while he had spent the entire time in the cab and in the line trying to get his credit card cancelled. Finally got in just after 1AM. IM came on shortly after, and were awesome, much better then the last time I heard them perform at Guvernment. Stuck in Koolhaus most of the night, saw Spam for the first time since destiny49 always good to see ya Spam, PM me your email and I will send you that Photo of you at Destiny I told you about. Christoper Lawrence was good but in my opinion not as good as the when I saw him at Guvernment in December, and we decided to leave around 5am. My friend was relieved to find his water bottle waiting for him outside, we decided to walk back to my place rather then the usual cab home, about 2 blocks north of Guvernment on Jarvis saw this guy passed out on the sidewalk he did not look to good, and even less good when the police arrested him and throw him in the back of a cruiser. Not eactly the night we had planned but we did have fun.

Simply a FANTASTIC Night.

Made my way down to KH around 11ish and when i got in after waiting in line for like 15 minutes which is not bad at all Deko-ze was ripping up the floor. Everyone was dancing and was having a great time. Deko-ze put a real good set and his stage presence was excelent.

Around 12:15 i made my way into Guv and there MO was just going nuts behind the decks. He set a real good vibe for Oscar G to come on. I didnt wait to see Oscar G come as it was now time for me to go back into KH and get lost with the tunes of IM.

IM were awesome. When City of Future came on the crowd went nuts. One thing i didnt like was some of the people that kept going on stage and pissing off the IM guys and then some of guys who kept running around the club with the flag. I got nothing against dancing and jumping around and having a great time but i mean c'mon, these reatrds bumped , pushed and kick me atlest 4 times during the IM set. Everywhere i went in KH they were there looool. Oh well moving onwards.

After IM came the DJ i had been dying to see for a real long time, Mr Christopher Lawrence. What a amazing and enegetic set he played. I danced my ass off non stop and really enjoyed his beats. Funniest thing was seeing people who kept screaming INFECTED even way after CL came on and when they realized it wasnt IM they started asking ' hey who is this dood' ? loool I got asked atleat like 7 or 8 times ' hey who is this dj spinning ' .

All in all i had a real good time and music was just phenomenol. Met with 1 or 2 TOTAs (since i dont know many yet) and it was all good times. Now hopefully i will get to see you guys at Viva for Airwave event.

And thats all i wrote about that.........

My first solo rave without the usual accompniment of DJ Endgame, but none the less, this was a blast of a time, Infected mushroom actually hurt my legs, and my throat because was dancing and yelling to loudly, and the addition of that live guitarist...just blew me right away. C.Lawrence was phenominal, just hard pumping bass until i couldn't stay away at 5.. Huge shout uots to Lindsay, Laura and Barry for getting me there, John for the comp pass. Cheers guys, made my weekend amazing.

Posted by Spam on Jun-12-2005 17:37:

Note to all people: EVERY Infected Mushroom event will have the dancing isrealis with their flag. Expect it, stay away from it, and stop complaining, PLEASE!

IM didn't look too pissed about people getting on stage for them, they're used to it by now I'm sure.

time for a propper review. Was too tired earlier:

what a stellar night. Lauren's friend millie was out with us for her first guvvy experience with us. And my brother was out again, quiet as ever but with his own unique energy evident.

Let me tell ya I wasn't impressed early on by the sound in the KoolHaus. Maybe its cuz of the maxxed out alpha dynacord at system the previous night or maybe there was something off but the bass was lacking at times and the system seemed to lack the "oomph" required for DJ's like Deko-ze, IM and Lawrence. None the less Deko-ze played a great opener (god i love him) and it was a rare treat to see him spin longer than an hour at a special event. He didn't go as hard as I thought but was still great especially with his mixing. Very tight from one of Toronto's hardest working DJs. The sound picked up towards the end of the his set and by the time Infekted Mushroom came on, it was at an acceptable level of enjoyment.

Now I've seen this Israeli duo multiple times but last time was BY FAR the best i've seen from them. Terrific stuff, alot of expected songs but hey its a LIVE PA so to play their stuff is expected. The guitar solos and add-ons were brilliant and that guy hit it off with the crowd big time. Typical IM crowd...lotsa rudeness and lack of concern for fellow partiers displayed by their fanatical following but hey now its expected right? Smile Memorable tracks included: "I am the Supervisor", "Cities of the Future", "Deeply Disturbed", "Devil", and their last song of the live PA which blew the place to shreds...the name escapes me. Just when we thought they were done, they jumped on the decks and threw down ANOTHER HOUR of a dj set which was full of newer stuff i assume and other psy material...much darker but just as hard.

Lauren left sometime during their set because of an early work shift this sunday morning...sucks but hey what can you do right ? she was sorely missed for the rest of the night.

Christopher Lawrence finally came on about 4.10am which i thought was kinda late and unfortunately the KH crowd had dwindled somewhat. Lawrence started inauspicously as there was little energy to feed off after IM's madness. Soon however with ample encourage from me and a few other maniacs at the front he picked it up and some solid Trance started to flow from his decks. Tune after Tune and build up after build up...Just what i expected and more....great stuff by the #7 dj in the world. FLAWLESS mixing.

By 6 we headed over to the mainroom and patio and Mark was playing some darker tribal stuff that soon turned into allout trance. That didn't last long however as we were treated to a techno treat to end the night at about 7.15 or 7.30. One thing..Mark threw a water bottle at me while i was on the stage and obviously where I thought the bottle was in the air...and where it actually was ...was a lil off....sorry whoever was behind me and got hit by Mark's water bottle :P....funny stuff!!

Overall great night...aren't these ultra spins always like that. The patio had a lovely "SUMMERY" feel to it and the vibe was great. I heard Felix da Housecat and Oscar G were both really really good and lived up to their billing. Next up is my favourite international house dj (no NOT sasha)...STEVE "FUCKING" LAWLER...really no need to swear but FUCK he's just so damn filthy!!!!

rating - 9/10 (can't have a perfect night without my partner in crime )....thats right sam...suck up suck up Smile Smile

hahaha, i know what you mean, i got one in 2 hours myself (3 club nights in a row is tough as always)

As for the night went awsome. kinda a mish-mash of ppl asking for help getting in and rides and everything but it worked out really well in the end. (Thank you john and Shaya for your help as always)

Caught some of Deko-ze's set. not bad, like the more mellower house stuff from him, went to catch the end of olivers and some of oscar's. nothing special (Awsome motorcycle - Around You remix)

IM was DESTROYING the place when i got back but they seemed to tire the crowed out come 3am ish.

Went backstage for a quick interview with lawrence, he was running late and i think the promoters lost him when i was interviewing him because IM ran out of live material and started to spin records.

***Side note funny story, the guys from the GUV side stole one of the CDJ1000's for Oscar to use, leaving the KH with only 1 cd. well Christopher as many dj's has converted to mostly cd. THey hooked up a Denon DN-S5000 which he had never used. so i spent about 5 minutes teaching the #1 dj in the states how to mix. How funny is that? hahaha ***

Overall he dropped some good tunes, exactly what i expected from him. Very down to earth aswell.

As for the TA's always make my night great. Those that I hung out with, rock my world. For those I got to say hi to again or meet, its great to see you out.

Thats me for now, back in TO on the 24th for Airwave at Viva

Entered the Koolhaus in the not so sober state just before midnight to have dekoze doing some hard work. Infekted came on not too long after with their typical level of intensity and energy man their set was wild! I absolutely love them The crowd can be a little unpredictable when it comes to these guys but the front row had the hardcores singing and dancing along. Christopher Lawrence dropped some hard trance but my body decided to rest then besides it was kind of hard picking up where IM left but CL did a pretty good job. MARK thankyou for that last hour of music which pretty much completed my night. Awesome night I should add.

Posted by PartyHarlequin on Jun-12-2005 18:52:

The music in The Drink/Deluxe Lounge/Skybar was awesome. At like 5am The Beautiful People (not remixed) was blasting in The Drink. The "view" from Skybar was delicious as usual. You can check out pics @ platinumworld.ca I'm not sure if they're up yet but they will be soon.

I was sorta sad I didn't see any TAs I knew. We've gotta do a meet up in The Drink at the beginning of the night one of these weekends so I can meet more of you people!

and oh yeah THANKS for throwing that water bottle MARK!

Posted by iLL on Jun-12-2005 19:37:

I hope that you all got a chance to see Felix in the drink... he absolutly owned me. Dirtiest house i have heard in a long time. Other than him I was slightly dissapointed with the other Djs i heard... but Mark did rip it towards the end of the night. Great night non the less.

Posted by PartyHarlequin on Jun-12-2005 19:43:

Felix was a rockin' Addy also dropped some huge tracks.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Jun-12-2005 20:18:

Hm... where to start?

Got to the Guvernment about 11pm. By 11:30 I was inside, which was pretty damn quick if you ask me (especially considering I waited in the wrong line at first. >_<). Plus, only paid $15 even though I didn't get in before 11, small thing, but nice nevertheless. And for $15, the evening was money well-spent.

Deko-Ze:

When I got in, he was already spinning, and he did an awesome job of warming the crowd up. At this point, Kool Haus was still half empty, so that was kinda nice. He dropped a few nice tracks, but my favourite track would definitely be 'Rachael Starr - Till There Was You'. The beat + lyrics were just awesome.

Infected Mushroom:

By 1:30am, the place was packed, and holy shit are those guys awesome. This is the first time I've seen them, and I have to say their set was more of a live performance rather than two DJ's spinning. I totally didn't expect one to be playing electric guitar live, adding tot he beat quite masterfully I must add. And shit, if playing a guitar live surprised me, when the second guy started singing live, my eyes nearly popped out. All in all, the mix of singing, guitars and the psy-trance beat was just fucking awesome. The 90% humidity + heat + huuuge crowd was starting to show - I have never sweated that much in my life EVER. Sweat was literally dripping off my forehear, chin, and every other place I could think of. Whatever hairstyle I had was gone within an hour, as my hair was soaked in my (and I think a few others') sweat. BTW, I understand smoking is cool and all, but for the love of God people, do not fucking light up right in the middle of the dancefloor. If you're gonna smoke, go towards the entrance doors and smoke your ass off there. There was little oxygen on the dancefloor as it was, without you polluting the air with your fucking smoke. By 3:30, which is roughly the time they finished, I was already mildly tired.

Christopher Lawrence:

I must say, when the guy started spinning, I wasn't too much into it. Maybe I was tired, or dehydrated, or what, but I just wasn't feeling it too much. However, around 5am, the guy went absolutely insane, and so did I. One fucking awesome track after another. My feet were killing me, but I didn't give a shit, cause the music was pumping. I don't think I stopped moving until 5:45, at which time I felt like I was gonna collapse if I didn't sit down. I amde my way up to the lounge area, and just sat, chilled, and enjoyed the rest of his set, which finished at roughly 6:15. Track of the set definately goes to 'Robert Van Gelderen - Cold Storage'. When I first realised he was starting to play that track, I thought I was gonna lose my mind. Hell, this was prolly the track of the whole night, because it was just so friggin awesome.

P.S. There was one dude in a blue t-shirt, and blue satin sweatpants with two thcik white stripes running down the side, anyway, I dunno who he is, but his footwork was fuking incredible. Props to him.

P.P.S. Can't say that the water bottles was money well-spent though. Charging 4 bucks per bottle is just gouging the consumer, especially considering how hot and humid it was inside.

P.P.P.S Now I gotta decide between seeing Sasha at the Guv or Johan Gielen at Republik next weekend. Any suggestions?

Posted by Tully on Jun-12-2005 20:34:

although I was out early I had a great night as usual. I was running around all night so I got to hear a bit of the music from the KH and the Guv - they were both rockin'. I wish I could have stayed the whole night but sometimes work gets in the way..... Wheh I was walkking to the car the music comming from the skybar was killer. I wish I would have had a chance to get up there. AH wel, might hit 5ive tonight. I can't get enough of Deko-ze

Posted by DeE420 on Jun-12-2005 23:22:

There is only one word that can describe Infected Mushrooms set; Intense. It was amazing, and I heard all of the songs I really wanted to. When they played The Supervisor, I remember thinking that my life was now complete.....but then they played a wicked mix of The Game as their last song, and I almost died.

Anyways I'm tired and sore and i need sleep. Basic point is that That was my 5th time seeing Infected, and they just keep getting fucking better.

Fuck, I under estimated the effect of my weed cookie and had to stay home and miss US8.

Consequently, I spent the night in a dimly lit room listening to Ambient music.

LOL.

This was the first time I had been to GUV in almost a year. Thanks to B4K-oz for the ticket - you made it all possible honey YOU totally rawk! It was all about the music for me last night.

When I arrived Dekoze was spinning - as always the beats were great and ushered my evening in. When Infected Mushroom came on I was sooooooooooooo freaking out. I love the whole live performance deal. It is something I have always wanted to see more of with electronic music. So much more visually stimulating. The guitar rifts were pretty dahum dope and I loved the keyboards/synths set up. Their beats were hardcore and made my feet not want to stop moving. Christopher Lawrence was pretty good although I did not hear a lot of his set. Prefer other times that I have seen him. Mark Oliver tore the shit up with some classics - I know why that dood is always there Saturday after Saturday - very very awesome!

As I made my way around the club special metions go to the guy who pulled his bongos out of storage (he was sitting on them) on the SKYbar....Started a whole drum circle thing again which I had missed earlier. Whoever thought of freezies in the heat of it all - wahooooooooooooo! So COOL! What is the deal with some of the chairs on the Koolhouse - omg - talk about sinking into mushland

Was not pleased with the actions of couple of the bouncers. They can be a little rough for no reason. Almost like they trying to cause some shit. That was the only vibe wrecker - and I can let that slide...

Thanks to SEAN, BK4-OZ (&Mario), Chrystal, Swamper, Carlos & Tristan for making this one incredible great vibing night.

There is still more I want to write - but need to head to bed - still re-couping....

Cya all next Saturday
