Hey there you tranceaddicts! this is greets from good 'ol e-town!. My question is what is the fuss with all those types of headphones out there. we ones that are 50bux.. and some that are like 250 bux!.. jeeeez! first of all i use the Stanton DJ PRO 60 Headphones, they sound fairly fine for the price that i pay.. however would it have been better if i had bought nice phat Sony headphones or like higher end Stanton headphones?!?!.

Whichever suits your need. Some people like it gimmicky. Some people like it fashionable. Some people like it practical. I personally prefer the Sennheiser HD-25. I like to wear my headphone upside down. HD-25 can "clamp" onto my face fairly easy. Besides, the drivers put out some beefy low-end and crispy high-end. Far better than my old Sony headphone. If your headphone works for you, and you see no reason to change it. Don't. Save you some money.

SONY MDR-V700

Ok I dislike Sony for the most part like everyone else, but my new headphones are the greatest. You have undoubtably seen them if you watch DJs often. They run about 100-120 US dollars and sound easily as good as the 250 dollar models. They are of course, the MDR-V700s and I highly recommend them. They have clean sound, no beefed up bass, clear mids and highs, they are spectacular. peace.

Expensive headphones ?!

I can't see the point in expensive headphones at all. As long as they play the music, it doesn't really matter does it? Decent speakers i can understand, but it's only the DJ that listens to the headphones. So what if they can play that extra couple of kHz? I use my �30 headphones (about US$45, don't ask me about canadian!), and they're absolutely fine!

DTJT, I urge you to take your $45 pair of headphones to a party with a big sound system and try playing there ... very soon, you'll find out why people shell out massive ammounts of money on their headphones. A DJ headphone must :

a) have EXCELLEND sound attenuation - ie. the bleedthrough of outside noise should be as little as possible. This is important since the sound you hear on the main speakers is slightly delayed from whay you are playing so it would get you confused REALLY fast if your headphones can't block it out.

b) have high SPL (ie. be VERY loud) ... I think this one is common sense - you would have the main system blast at over 100 dB, so your headphones - even with good attenuation - need to drown out the outside noise

c) have low THD (total harmonic distortion) even at maximum volume - it doesn't help if the headphone can go really loud but starts clipping and distorting halfway through

d) be very comfortable - try spinning for 4-6 hours with a shitty headphone ... your ears would start hurting really fast =)

e) - this one is optional, but important to me - flat frequency response throughout the whole sound spectrum. I hate it when cans sound really nice, but pump out too much bass (A LOT of headphones do this).

IMO the best DJ headphone to get right now would be the Sennheiser HD-25 (NOT the HD-25 SP version). Very clean and loud sound, perfect noise attenuation, light, comfortable ... and all parts are user replacable, so if something busts you don't have to shell out the money for a new pair. I dislike the Sony MDR-700DJ for a few reasons
- too heavy ... can get really uncomfortable after a while
- tends to overemphasize the bass (the higher portion of low frequencies) ... don't really like it
- it is a little scary to put something on your ears that can pump out 3000 mW ... imagine turning the wrong knob on the mixer (headphone volume) and accidentaly blowing your ears ...

Welp!.. i suggest none of you guys go out and buy the Stanton DJ PRO 60's.. purely for that fact is that they are cheaply constructed. Now i kinda know why some headphones are more expensive than others!.. $60 headphones will sometimes break quicker than $100 headphones.. good thing i only had these headphones for a week.., i am gonna try out the Stanton DJ Pro 1000MK2 or the Sony MDR-500DJ, they are still in my price range.. someone let me know if those two are a good choice or not.. I kinda don't like the Stanton DJ Pro 1000's because they don't fold.. i might consider the Pro 2000's instead. If the Sony MDR-500DJ's are good, i might pick those instead.. Someone let me know!!

I have MDR-500DJ here .. And all I can say is that they do a great job! .. Loose absolutly no sound with it and it's not that expensive .. you should go with it if you don't have $200 to spend on headphones (buy records instead!) Cya!

Anyone checked out the new Ministry of Sound cans? From what I have read, they are top notch! Most reviews i have read picked the MoS phones over the Sony's.

Does anyone else here have the Sony MDR-V500DJ headphones?.. can anyone compare them to other headphones, like how much worse is the MDR 500's to the MDR 700's.. and how do they compare to the Stanton DJ Pro 2000 S?

Just FYI, 3000 mW is just 3 watts and the sound of one's fart can have more power. For an experienced DJ (who always apriori has a deafness problem) it should be at least 5-8 watts.

I agree that alot of DJs have hearing problems... but becoming deaf isn't the GOAL of DJing so I can't see the point of 8 watt headphones

A pair of 6 watt satellite speakers I have are good enough to fill a decent-sized room with (low quality :P) sound... I couldn't imagine strapping speakers that powerful to my head

And I'd like to see you make a 3 watt fart :P Wait, on second thought scratch that one

My bad.... I covered that topic a long time ago and just remembered the figures. I confused 3W with 300mW. Actually, skywarp, you are absolutely right. The rated power is mostly not more than 500mW for most of the headphones, while the maximum power handling capacity is almost always not more than 1W

Jocker, it's all good ... =). For that exact reason I have my worries about the MDR 700DJ cans blasting my ears to kingdom come, considering they are capable of handling singlas about three times stronger than my Sennheiser HD-25 - and they go mindnumbingly loud already ... ouch!
