turntablists

Hey why are turntablists better 'technical djs'??

Because they can pull off tricks with turntables that would leave your average trance DJ crying in the corner.

On the other hand, there's a huge difference between technical ability and the ability to entertain a crowd. On the purely technical side, turntablists piss all over most of the 'regular' DJs, On the entertainment side, well, that's up to you to decide.

why does dj mag always have trance djs at the top of the rankings?

Well your regular turntablist comes on stage with an act he/she has been working on for a while (correct me if im wrong). But your trance DJ is more anonymous in what tracks he/she plays during the set, trance DJ's set would go for alot longer.

Dont think you can really compare the two.

Maybe I should have said "technical skills" instead of "quality", since quality can be defined in so many different ways, subjective to everyone's opinions. Doesn't make the DJ Mag list less of a popularity poll in my book, though.



On a side note, no, I did not remove the quote in my sig because of this. I still agree with it, it's just that I thought it was time for something different (i.e., my three favourite records of the moment).

when you say they have marks, what do you mean exactly. Like on some vinyl you can see where the intro/buildup/breakdown etc are, can't you?

They put stickers or whatever on certain parts of the record so they can see where the start, middle, end, best place to scratch, highest ptiched part, lowest part etc. is on the record.

The two are uncomparable and electronic DJ's/turntablists are masters in their own right. Turntablists rarely have professional mixing abilities but they are far more agile with their hands as their primary purpose is scratching. This is where the trance/tech/prog DJ falls short but compensates for it by superior mixing abilties.

They use the same tool, and Turntablists do much more difficult tasks with that tool than your "DJ's". The more difficult the task, the more technical ability it requires. Therefore when using turntables(the tool) turntablists have much more technical ability than "standard dj's". I believe that is the entire point of this thread. Why don't you UNDERSTAND? Have you seen the Technics DJ competition? OMFG it's awesome those folks do some crazy shit. It's not that fun to listen to, but it's really fun to watch .

That's the best of the best there and I must say I got a little bored by the end of the comp. I think that turntablist stuff is short lived. Even though it takes a ton of talent, creativity and an surgen like precision it doesn't live up to a real DJ set where the focus is the music. Plus, I never really liked the sound of scratching, a little is okay, but it doesn't sound good! It's scratching!

I really like the globetrotters vs. nba champions analogy. lol perfect.

Also I think what varun means by superior mixing skills is beatmatching and transitioning. Turntablelists hardly ever beatmatch or layer tunes. They usually play one and fuck around with another while fading back and forth or thowing a beat or acapella on top. Or they have two of the same record and fuck around that way, requiring no beatmatching as they are the same speed. This is the only category that DJs are better at, the transitions between one song and another, because this is what they must do well. A DJ set requires that tunes flow together well which requires this skill in spades.
