Max Graham

Hey guys,

Ive been producing for around about a year now, starting to come up with some stuff im liking. At the moment, probably my favourite producer is max graham;- i am really digging the sound he is making.

I am posting this to the experienced producers that frequent this forum;

Are you able to explain/demonstrate how
1) He gets that really phat bass sound.
2) How he gets his drums sounding so incredibly clean.

I use cubase, Battery 2, and all the main VST synths that are available. I understand he uses a virus C for his bass, but if anyone could help me understand how to create that sound etc, i would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

actually if we are going to help you out, we need an idea of what bass you are talking about and what percs

I think the bass sound you are referring to is the one used in Owner of a lonely heart (Remix). It was used a lot in speed garage back in the lat 90's it's kind a deep rumble. I for one would be interested to find out how to make it as well.

post a sample of it

Hey,

Ive created a couple of samples from a max graham track. I Chose his remix of owner of a lonely heart, because its probably the track that most of you will be most familiar with

First, heres a sample of his bass;
Im looking for information/demonstration on how to recreate this sound.

Secondly, heres a sample of his percs;
Im just curious if anyone can provide some good info on how he gets his drums so damn clean and nice.

http://www.djbensmith.net/max%20gra...cs%20sample.mp3

Im aware of the techniques used, but i guess im looking for more in depth information than just, "use compression", or "eq" it.

Sweet, thanks guys.

I come up with this :
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/TranceDevot...xgrahamBass.mp3
(Made with FM7)

Very easy to make this kind of bass :

First you need two sine oscillators(A and B), one panned 15% left, the other 15% right.
Let them go to the OUTPUT at 100% level in the matrix

Then use two saw oscillators(C and D) like this :
C frequency ratio is detuned 1.0070
D freq ratio is detuned 1.0070

Now in the matrix C --> 32 --> A
D --> 32 --> B

Equalize it like this :

bass resonance from 70 to 320
notch from 350 to 1500

Let me know if you want the patch

fark man that is absolutely perfect!

do you have msn?
add me to your msn;
[email protected]

Thanks heaps for your help;
and id love to get a hold of that patch.

Thanks in advance.

I have msn installed but I don't use it.
Here is a package where you will find the preset for FM7 and if you own Fruityloops you will have the equalization settings :
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/TranceDevot...xgrahamBass.zip

For the percs, you just have to find good samples ...

Posted by Eyeofthejedi on Jun-17-2005 14:41:

thanks man,

did you create those percs as well?

Posted by everyMan on Jun-17-2005 14:43:

No I sampled the beat you gave me.

Posted by Eyeofthejedi on Jun-17-2005 14:48:

Ok man,

Ive loaded the patch up in cubase, using the fm7, and it sounds nothing at all like yours haha.

I dont have fruity loops, so could you run me through the steps i need to take to get it sounding phat
Cheers.

here is the equalizer settings : http://s17.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=...GO0SGCT83HZF6SN
I also add a sidechain compression.
In the package this also is a reverb but in fact it sounds better without ..
There is nothing else
Here is the midi : http://s20.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=...IC3VKOZICEVD3HI

One last question, you've been really helpful, and i appreciate it muchly;

What is the best VST to use, for a side chaining compression;
and what settings will i need to use on the side chain compressor to get the desired result

Thanks

Posted by everyMan on Jun-17-2005 15:24:

In fact I don't own any SideChain Vst.. If you load the .flp in fruity you will see that it is only a simple compressor with an automation on the threshold.
When the kick comes the threshold goes -20 with an quick attack, then it rise to -5 at the offbeat..

Posted by Eyeofthejedi on Jun-17-2005 15:30:

Ok this is the sound im getting though :S

http://www.djbensmith.net/synth.mp3

Is that what yours sounded like before EQ and Side chaining?

Posted by everyMan on Jun-17-2005 16:20:

Yes ! now you can load the midi notes, put the tempo to 128BPM and equalize the sound trying to follow the equalization curve I gave you.

really well done, goes to show how important an EQ is on this bassline
