June 22nd, 1941: Operation Barbarossa the Axis invasion of Russia
Operation Barbarossa (Unternehmen Barbarossa) was the German codename for Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II, which commenced on June 22, 1941. It was to be the turning point for the fortunes of Hitler's Third Reich in that the failure of Operation Barbarossa arguably resulted in the eventual overall defeat of Nazi Germany. The Eastern Front which was opened by Operation Barbarossa would become the biggest theatre of war in World War II, with some of the largest and most brutal battles, terrible loss of life, and miserable conditions for Russians and Germans alike. The operation was named after the emperor Frederick Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire.

Do any Russians have any pictures I can post here? My Russian is very lacking since I do not know it. You will be given credit.
One thing that astounds me about Barbarossa is that Hitler devoted an entire chapter in Mein Kampf to discussing why it was absolutely necessary that Germany never be at war with both Britain and the Soviet Union at the same time. He was very clear that such a situation would result in a war that could not be won. However, this is exactly what he did. It makes no sense at all.
prolly cuz he was overconfident or he couldn't stand that GB won the air battle. So out of desperation to make himself feel as though his army was still good he would invade the soviet union.
He was paranoid and thought the Soviets were planning on reneging on the non-aggression pact. He also thought he could make a push for the Azerbaijani oil fields, since his meager supplies from Romania were running low, and the British effectively shut down their North Sea production.
Funny how it always comes back to oil, eh?
