Woman Uses Breast Milk To Put Out Burning Amputee Set On Fire By Teens

News Edition: 05/21/2005

A real-life supermom used a bottle of breast milk to douse an amputee yesterday after his wheelchair was set ablaze by punks on a Staten Island bus, cops said.

The nursing mother's fast actions helped save Vietnam vet Francis Abrams, 57, from becoming a human torch, and stopped the fire from engulfing the S-54 bus, police and the victim said.

"It was put out with breast milk," said a police source, who was awed by the bizarre incident that happened just after 11 a.m.

Abrams, who lost his left leg in Vietnam, said he was minding his own business as he rode the city bus to the Staten Island Mall to buy a video of "The Exorcist."

Just after he boarded the bus, three teens playing hooky from Tottenville High School pulled a cruel prank, cops said.

"They set my chair on fire," an angry Abrams said last night, refusing to allow photographers to take pictures of his face. "They thought it was a joke."

Cops said the teens used a cigarette lighter to ignite a plastic bag hanging from the back of Abrams' motorized wheelchair.

The flames quickly engulfed the bag, containing the Greek classics "Odyssey" and "Iliad."

As the fire spread to Abrams' jacket, he screamed: "Water!"

As her baby looked on, the new mom and a friend sprang into the action, dousing the fire with a freshly pumped bottle of breast milk and another bottle of water, authorities said.

The back of Abrams' wheelchair was slightly melted by the fire, but he was not harmed thanks to the nursing mother.

"I said, 'Thank you,'" Abrams said.

When bus driver Deborah Thompson spotted the fire, she wheeled the bus to a stop at Crossfield Ave. and Arthur Kill Road in Greenridge, officials said.

But as she called 911, the three fire-starters bolted.

Cops from the 123rd Precinct got a detailed description of the suspects from Thompson and Abrams and quickly found the pranksters.

The names of the suspects were not released because of their ages. All of them are 15. They were charged with arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, authorities said.

Asked about the fire being extinguished with breast milk, Abrams bristled, "I don't care. It doesn't bother me."

Shame / Disagreement

In a double-blind study, f'ers prefer consolidation 5 to 1 over non-consolidation.

Married men earn more if wives do the chores?

Wed Jun 22,11:40 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Married men earn more than bachelors so long as their wives stay at home doing the housework, according to a report Wednesday from Britain's Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER).

Academics Elena Bardasi and Mark Taylor found that a married man whose wife does not go out to work but is primarily responsible for the cooking and cleaning earns about 3 percent more than comparably employed single men.

But that wage premium disappears if wives go out to work themselves or don't do most of the housework.

"It has been fairly well documented that married men earn more than single men," Taylor, a labor economist, told Reuters.

"However, our research established the wage premium is related to the wife doing the chores," said the academic who teaches at the University of Essex in eastern England.

He said analysis suggests there could be two explanations for the results:

A marriage might allow a husband and wife to focus their activities on tasks to which they are most suited. Traditionally, this would result in the man concentrating on paid work enabling him to increase productivity and in consequence his wages.

Taylor said another explanation could be that marriage may increase the amount of time a man has to hone work-related skills which could trigger higher wages.

Taylor and Bardasi analyzed the hourly wages of 3,500 men who have been interviewed annually since 1991 as part of the British Household Panel Survey.

"We looked at all types of jobs from unskilled up to managers and professionals," Taylor said.

'Drowned' girl's back broken, sources say

BOB MITCHELL
STAFF REPORTER

Peel homicide officers are now probing the death of a 3-year-old Brampton girl, a tragedy initially reported as an accidental drowning in a backyard pool.

Police won't say how the young girl died, but sources have told the Toronto Star that the child's back was broken.

Family members were questioned extensively over the past two days about the death in a home on Rockrose Dr. in the Bramalea Rd.-Bovaird Dr. area.

Sources said homicide detectives became involved yesterday afternoon following an autopsy at the Sick Kids hospital. Results haven't been released.

Yesterday, yellow police tape cordoned off the semi-detached home for the second consecutive day and a police officer guarded the residence. There were no signs of any family members.

Forensic investigators spent much of Tuesday inside the home. Peel police officers questioned neighbours yesterday and also spent time inside.

Emergency personnel rushed to the home Tuesday morning after receiving a 911 call indicating that a child had drowned in a backyard inflatable pool.

Police said a relative living in the residence brought the unconscious child to a neighbour's house where the 911 call was made just before 9:40 a.m. The girl was rushed to Peel Memorial Hospital, but she couldn't be resuscitated.

The neighbour told reporters that the relative never mentioned anything about the child drowning. The neighbour added the girl was "totally dry."

Although neighbours said the young girl had a twin brother, police said the boy was a cousin. Another older child also lives in the home. Police said the dead girl's father lives in India.

that is the weirdest investigation into a kid's death ever.

first of all, how did she break her back in a kiddie pool, second of all how does she drown and third of all how does she drown not getting wet? maybe the journalist worded things funny in this article.

Alcoholic brew kills 20 Kenyans
Alcohol poisoning victim in Kenya
Some people have gone blind
At least 20 Kenyans have died after drinking illegally produced alcohol, according to hospital officials.

Dozens of other people have been admitted to hospital, and some have gone blind, they say.

The alcohol was drunk over the past few days in the village of Makutano 30km south of Nairobi.

Hospital staff think the brew - made from molasses - may have contained methanol, a toxic chemical used in antifreeze, to make it more potent.

Police search

"Samples of the drink will be taken to the government chemists in Nairobi tomorrow to confirm the actual contents," district medical officer Wako Dulacha told Reuters news agency.

We suspect that this is some kind of industrial alcohol
David Kimaiyo, Kenya police

Police have been instructed to search the area for the remains of the brew.

"We suspect that this is some kind of industrial alcohol," director of operations for the Kenya police, David Kimaiyo told AP, adding that arrests have been made already.

One of the victims, Mwoka Musimi, 30, said after one drink he "nearly died".

"I just lost my consciousness. My wife took me to hospital... I'm lucky that I didn't lose my sight or die like my friends."

Some people were found dead in their homes.

More than 100 people died in Nairobi in 2000 as a result of drinking poisonous beer.

One dose of speed during pregnancy may cause long-term problems for the baby
Canadian Press
July 27, 2005

TORONTO (CP) - A single dose of the drug speed during pregnancy could be enough to cause long-term problems in babies, according to University of Toronto researchers.

Pregnant mice exposed only once to methamphetamine had offspring with reduced motor co-ordination and other neurodevelopmental effects.

"We've known for a while that meth abuse during pregnancy is associated with low birth weight, cleft palates and other malformations, but this is the first research demonstrating that even a single exposure can cause long-term damage," Peter Wells, a University of Toronto pharmacy and pharmacology professor, said Tuesday in a news release. "It's pretty remarkable that a single low dose can have such an effect."

He said the findings are of particular concern because of an increasing use of so-called club drugs, like speed, by women of child-bearing age. And it appears the developing child is vulnerable from the embryonic stage - before a woman may even know she is pregnant - through to the later fetal period.

"It has clinical implications, because it shows that the fetus is exquisitely sensitive," Wells said.

The research led by Wells is published in the August issue of Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

The researchers believe a developing fetus can be affected because it hasn't yet produced the enzymes that protect it against free radicals.

Wells plans to study women and infants who have been exposed to speed or similar drugs to see if the human damage is consistent with his mouse findings.

He will also try to determine whether the methamphetamine causes other lasting damage in mice, affecting such things as learning and memory.

The research was supported by a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Echinacea or however the hell you spell it, has been proven to be a bunch of bullshit.

Placebo effect, meet society. Society, placebo effect.

From: http://www.theage.com.au/news/science/echinacea-doesnt-work-study-finds/2005/07/28/1122143939019.html?oneclick=true

quote:

Being sick with a cold is nothing to sneeze at, but new research finds that taking the popular herbal remedy echinacea does nothing to treat or prevent it.

The federally funded study was what fans and foes of such substances say they have long needed - rigorous, scientific testing. It found that patients who took an echinacea plant extract fared no better than those who took a dummy treatment.

"Our study . . . adds to the accumulating evidence that suggests that the burden of proof should lie with those who advocate this treatment," wrote Dr Ronald Turner of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, who led the study, which appeared in today's New England Journal of Medicine.

Echinacea, or purple coneflower, is sold over-the-counter in pills, drops and lozenges. With reported annual sales of more than $US300 million ($A397.51 million), echinacea is one of the most popular medicinal herbs used by people to treat colds.

Several animal studies and small human trials have pointed to the possible benefit of the herb in preventing respiratory infections. However, one of largest studies - involving 407 children in 2003 - found that echinacea failed to alleviate cold symptoms and even caused mild skin rashes in some cases.
AdvertisementAdvertisement

In the newest experiment, researchers recruited 399 healthy patients who got one of three laboratory-made echinacea plant extracts or a dummy preparation.

The patients were then exposed to the cold virus and their symptoms were evaluated.

Scientists found no difference in infection rates between the groups who received the herb or placebo.

About 90 per cent in both groups wound up becoming infected. Symptoms like sneezing, runny noses and sore throat were also about the same, with more than half in both groups showing classic signs of a clinical cold.

The study was funded by the National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the federal National Institutes of Health. Turner, the lead researcher, has consulted for various antibiotic makers.

In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Wallace Sampson, an emeritus clinical professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, questioned why the government is wasting tax dollars on funding alternative medicine studies, some of which have turned out to be nothing but snake oil.

"Research into implausible remedies rarely produces useful information," wrote Sampson, who was not connected to the study.

But Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council, an independent group that studies herbs, said people should not dismiss echinacea as a cold remedy.

Blumenthal pointed out that the extract used in the latest study was prepared in the lab and not sold in stores. He also added that the herb might work better if higher doses were used.

"This is not a definitive trial on the efficacy of echinacea, nor should the results be generalised to echinacea preparations widely available," he said.

Museum's naked admission

An Austrian museum is offering free entrance to anyone who turns up naked.

With temperatures in Vienna reaching 36C, the Leopold Museum says its latest campaign has come at just the right time.

Spokeswoman Verena Dahlitz said: "We're offering free entrance to anyone who turns up in their birthday suit as a promotion for our latest exhibition The Naked Truth.

"We understand that some people may be shy, and so we'll probably let them in free in swimming costumes, but we're hoping once inside they'll realise how liberating it is to look at the art in the nude."

The exhibition features works by three of Austria's greatest artists Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.
