Rasta Listening

So when you're listening to new Trance tracks you haven't heard before what do you listen for? I mean do you go straight for the main valley and hook (usually in the middle) or are you more interested in the rhythm building phase?

Lately I find myself going through records and Mp3's like crazy tring to find that track thats gonna really put the peanut butter on my bread, lol. Usually I put the needle right on the longst quiet period and listen for that uplifting hook, then i listen for overall consistanty, if there's any male vocals or things I consider out of place. ( I don't know why but I can't stand male singing for some reason, especially in Trance, crazy huh?). Then ,if I'm listening to records, I check for warping or crackles etc... usually I'll buy it even if it's a little fucked up.

Any thoughts?
cheers

I usually listen to it to see if I like it or not. You know, if it appeals to my ear. Uh, that's about it.

well personally....it has to have a cracking build up....something with a good kick drum and hi-hat, something that will move my feet and with a good bassline.

then it must have some sort of nice percussion (kettle drums, bells or claps etc) and a melody (strings etc),

vocals have to be spot on...if they are not, i wont buy the track simple as that....unless theres is a dub on the flip

The thing i find with tracks is that they start off perfect....but then something small will put me off....like a weedy synth or shit vocals.

but buy what you like
and records always sound better when u listen to them in the record shop

Same for me too. I don't look for anything specific.

good bassline, euphoric melody,
i pay attention to the details, the more complex is a track the more i'll like it

sometimes warping and crackles make for an interesting production. dunno if they have that in epic trance type stuff though.

Talking

I dunno what it is... just when melody, harmony and bass all come together in an enjoyable manner, it triggers something in my brain. It's hard to explain... music is an insane thing. I think the fact that I have perfect pitch amplifies it. Complexity definitely plays a role, because I hate over-simplified stuff.

For Trance in general, similarity to classical music is a major factor... and in the case of Trance, and of all music, it has to create pictures... really good trance music (really good music PERIOD, for that matter) will have my hyperactive imagination firing on all cylinders!

Good music for me is almost like "hearing a movie."

I listen to the whole tune with a holistic approach. Then I listen again - I usually get a truer idea of whether I like the tune the second time round. There is no one feature that is important to me. My tastes are so eclectic that I find it impossible to pin down one exact thing that makes me like all the tunes that I do, except that I...umm...enjoy listening to it.
