Review: AIRWAVE @ Viva Nightclub w/ Mark Oliver, Tygon & Celica

OMFG what a night!!!!

Feel like shit right now because I just waited 1 hour for security to let me into my building (I forgot my passcard at home! )...wanted to polish off a few things for today so I decided I'd take the 5 minute drive from Viva to go to work...

AIRWAVE KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!! Man, when he does his get-down-n-dirty face to pump up the crowd he looks really scary!!!! TOTALLY PUMPS YOU UP!!!! I wish I caught that expression on camera; this man really knows how to make the crowd explode! I heard "Say Hello" for the first time in a big club and I can see why so many of you love it! And his track, "Hello Sunshine" was SIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK!!!!

Sorry, DJ Celica, I'm sorry I couldn't hear your set (got in around 1:30) but I heard Tygon proppa...fuckin' well done, bro!!! I was so happy to finally hear you spin your magic in a big club and I was so into it!!!

I was kinda getting tired around 4:30 as most of my KW crew had left (THANKS FOR SAYING BYE CALE AND DAN ) but I met so many new TAs...will be shouting out in a sec...anyway, even though I was only in there for 3 hours, the humidity was getting to be a bit too much (they really need to do something about the air circulation in Viva; the air was hot and HEAVY as hell! I tried to support my TAs in front and centre by flapping my towel to fan ppl down a bit but it's never enough! Nice to go out in the patio but it wasn't really fresh air I was breathing; I think I smoked a pack's worth just from second hand smoke!

But as I was considering leaving, MARK OLIVER comes on and suddenly the whole crowd shifted into NEXT GEAR!!!!! SUCH WICKED TRACKS!!! One was a Ferry classic (can't remember the name) and it totally lifted me up and made me last another hour and a half!!! Then I had to get going...

FINALLY got to meet RobbyG (dude you are COOL), Orko, TranceGrooves (munday, you rock! ), dnmr, Pettischool, Carney, Smuncky, Jayx1 (nice lighting job, man, it was beautiful! ), and the usual suspects including Dan the Man, Cale, awishabear (girl, you did NOT disappoint ), Lowell (and your WIFE!!!! Dude, she's so nice! Hope she comes out again!), Ampz, Tygon, DENNIS HAHN, Celica, MaxTO, RTT, DJ_baby_tenshi...also a VERY brief hello to Schryer and Jenna.

Tyler, you have absolutely crazy amounts of energy...it was so cool to soak in the beats with you at front and centre! Djvery and bourgeois, you too!!! Both of you have wikked energy, and bourgeois you kick ass with the glowies!

Tygon, Celica, and Ampz thanks again for making this event happen, and for pushing my ass to show up! I really had an amazing time!!!

When I left around 5:45/6ish, I saw RTT (Rob) and his girl, babytenshi sitting outside! We drove over to BK's nearby for breakfast to cap off a wonderful night...

...now to get some work done!

Holy Mother Mary Of Sweet Jesus...............

Words cannot describe the kind of night i had. For the first time since i have been in Canada and been clubbing i felt like i was right at home in a club in Miami. Greatest thanks to all the TAs that i met and for everyone who made this night an absolute delight. (shoutouts comin up).

Got to the club just after 11 as i wanted to really see Aaron (Dj Celica) spin. As i was having a smoke outside the front doors of the club before i went in, suddenly bass started thumping and Synergy - Hello Strings came as the first track Aaron dropped. I knew right then and there i was in for a great night. Aaron your set was awesome, job well done bro.

Dj Tygon followed Aaron behind the decks and the dark hard beats just kept the night alive and i was really having a blast listening to some of the tunes Tygon dropped. WIcked set. Maybe i can score a copy of the set somehow?

Around 2am came on the man himself AIRWAVE...this was my first time watching airwave spin and seeing this guy is lots of fun as he is full of energy behind the decks. the tunes he dropped were amazing and his mixing was great. Danced my ass off in front of the Dj booth with eyeryone.

Last but not least came Mark Oliver around 4:20am. By this time i was so pumped up and stuff Mark dropped some real good tracks to begin his set with. His set was just perfect and the tunes he played were just the right tunes to be played right after Airwave.I left the club around 5:30 and only because i felt like i was gonna die in that hot and humid dancefloor. My clothes were completely wet from dancing all night

Now to the shoutouts Aaron thankyou for hooking me up with the guestlist and it was great to see you there. Cale and Dan you 2 crazy lads are simply awesome people to party with. It was great seeing you 2 again. I also met alot of new TAs....Fahad "Yaar aap aik khas admi hao" it was great dancing it up with you and Dan and Cale in front of the Dj booth. Good to meet Ampz , Dennis Hahn , Tygon ( thnx for the cd bro )Robby , Jayx1 , MaxTO and many more that i cant seem to remember but as said earlier it was really nice to meet all of you and hopefully i will see ya lot again at Tiesto.

Fahad, the Ferry classic that Mark played is called Holding On. Great track indeed. Thnx again to everyone that came out and thnx to all the people who made this event possible and a success. Mad props to Aaron and his crew for having this event and hopefully we will get to have many more great parties like this one in future. With that being said

Tyler OOUUUTTT........

it was a good party, but jesus christ, didnt any of you see the brawl outside the club? poor guy got jumped by like 10 people with baseball bats, belts, sticks, etc... then as im about to take off i see this guy pull out a gun on him and i told myself, ok fuck it im going home.... so its not only hiphop clubs after all ah? why bringing weapons when youre going to a party to have fun?

GREAT party.

I'm still way too tired to write up a proper review, we got back into Cambridge at 6am, and I crashed around 6:30 - woke up at 11:50am.

Great to see everybody, and great to meet a bunch of new faces!

{edit} Fahad, where the fuck were you when we left? We looked all over, couldn't find you. Sorry dude

Posted by RobbyG. on Jun-25-2005 16:36:

I didn't know what to expect last nite but MAN was that ever a great party ...I danced my ASS off most of the nite and now I'm SOO tired today...I have to thank ALL the djs that spun last nite because the transitions from one dj to the next was smooth and I LUV that...I got to hear Dj Tygon's set (thanx SO much for the CD dude ) and loved the tracks he dropped...Airwave was simply SUPERB and when he left I was able to shake hands with him but he left quite fast out the back door.I heard he had to catch a flight or something.I was also blown away with Mark O's set as well...This guy had me goin & gave me the extra ounce of energy to dance my ass off...I think I must have lost like 5 lbs from sweating in there....MAN it was hot

I was SO glad to have finally met my fellow F1 fan Fayraree...You are wikid dude...Trancegrooves & RTT and SO many others we're also in full force ...US TAs sure know how to have fun eh? ...I also said a quick hello to Jayx1...I wanted to go in the DJ booth dude but I didn't wanna go through the security guy guarding the booth...ANyway that was an awesome lite show

Anyway its time for me to grab a bite....hope to see you guys out & about soon

Glad I didn't see that! I don't know about people these days

what brilliant music..
other than that...i had the worst time ive ever had at a club...
just couldnt get a vibe going...

airwave was downright nuts though!!!!
apologies to everyone if i was unsocial
atleast im not sketchy today for Pride celebrations

I dont know about the brawl outside the club but i sure the hell caught a glimpse of the cat fight inside the club Loooool. Girls with their fists up and boobs bouncing, there is something exciting about that even tho its a fight.

I just realized when i went to the store to buy icecream that my voice is shot from yellin and screaming and singing all night long. The girl at the store told me my voice sounded like Arnie from Terminator.

I knew I was going to regret not going.

Posted by awishabear on Jun-25-2005 18:18:

ohhhhh my god I don't even know where to start.
My fingers aren't working properly today cuz I'm so dead tired and drained but in a good way!!
I'VE NEVER HAD SO MUCH FUN IN MY LIFE!! I honestly can't find the words to describe it. My head is still ringing from standing up at the DJ booth, but I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else!!
This was my first experience at VIVA, but oh man, it was amazing. I got a ride in with Aaron, Barry and Lisa, we picked up Airwave and got to the club around 10 ish, to do sound check and make sure everything was working. It was really cool to check out the behind the scenes bit, since I'd never been to a place like that before (I consider Docks to be something else). It was a little weird to be like, one of the first people there, but it gave me a good chance to look around.
Barry let me listen in on his interview with Airwave, that was fun. We got back inside just as Aaron began his set. More people were comin in, sayin hi, enjoyin themselves - I can't remember the order I saw people in first, but I'll do my best to shout out to everyone (don't hold it against me if I forget anyone!!)
Gah! Anyways, I was up at the bar by the time Aaron's set got way into it, and feelin pretty good by the time Tygon started spinning. Must say THANK YOU to Lindsay, Avery and Carl for buying me drinks! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARL!!!!!!!!!
I can't remember exactly when I got out on the dance floor, but I do know that once I got out there, I couldn't leave! It was so amazing to be up there and bustin a move. The music was great (I am not experienced enough to know a lot of the songs, but if they make my feet move, they rock!), the people dancing up there were great, and I'm sorry if I stepped on or hit anybody while I was dancing!! Thanks to Martin for letting me use his glow sticks, that was fun!
Aaron, Lisa, Lindsay, Airwave and me left around 5, when Airwave was done his set (which friggin rocked). We hung around outside for a little bit saying goodbye to everyone, but as soon as I was in that car, I was asleep. Fastest ride home from Markham EVER haha! Got in around 6:15, slept until 1 pm. I'm lazy and I love it!
Okay, now for the shout outs... and remember, awishabear had a bit to drink, and it was dark so don't get mad!! Aaron, Barry, Jayx1, Dennis, Carl, Tim, Matt, Dan, Cale, Lowell (and wife), Avery, Alex, Justin (and friends) and Fahad! Ohmygodyourock! I know I'm forgetting people and if it's obvious I'm forgetting you, you can hit me later. I LOVE YOU ALL!
Alright, it's about time I get some food into me. I can't WAIT to go back to Viva someday and hopefully I'll see everyone out next next Thursday at Vault - I'm headin home for my mom's birthday this week, so I won't be there, but I'll be there in spirit!
Thanks to everyone involved in this awesome event, to Aaron for getting me so involved in this music and these people, I will never forget it, and can't wait for next time!!

wow

W O W!

i got there aroudn 1.30 with my friend and my sis. the air was ok at that point and i was surprised by that. we heard tygon play for 30 min and it was great. nice pumping sounds. it really got me goin for airwave.

then the man himself came on. airwave was amazing. he played top notch tunes. i loved him engery and how he interacted with the crowd. arcadia was a perfect first track to start the set off.

throughout the night i met some TAs as usual and we were pumping it hard in front. you guys really have some great moves and danced ur asses off even with that humid air.

the air in there was terrible. thats one of the reasons i left cuz it was getting hard to breathe. this was my first time that i was actually tired at the end. you guys really gotta get that air moving in there with fans or something.

we left just a bit after MO started to play, so around 4.40. overall it was a great night and i hope to see u guys there for Cor Finjeman.

Posted by VERTiG0 on Jun-25-2005 18:36:

Another thought - Airwave has insane energy. Definitely one of the best up on the decks, he is a MACHINE. Fucking awesome to watch.

Well All. I think Paradigm is on the Map for this one.

First of all, for those that put there heart and sole into making this happen, much respect. Have to give huge props to Celica, Tygon and Matt for their hard work. There is a good 10 other people within paradigm that worked their ass off, flyering and promoting aswell. It showed. the club was only 80% asian, not 95% as a resident night would be.

To the DJ's. Wow is all i have to say. Aaron = Supurb and an almost flawless opening. Tim what can I say, always a pleasure to watch. Laurent, you have the most fun ive' seen a dj in a long time. its a joy to watch you in your element. 100% professional, AND friendly. Looking forward to your return. Mark.....well its mark thats about all I can say Need to Feel Loved (some hard remix), Shivers and Holding On all in a row....sang my heart out...and my voice.

The club itself seemed very Viva. meaning nothing new, the TA's were very seperated and i never saw anything else of a problem. Never heard of any fights but i guess it still happens. Not good
The bouncers for those that met them, are extreamly nice and enjoy their work. they help make the night alot better

To the TA's....Alot of fun. Love how we just took over the VIP bar area. It was like "Hi im a ta, who else is.....*waves hand in general area* say hi if you want to meet someone". Lots of support, new and old faces. Love the crew, all I can say is you dont see "us" kind of ppl anywhere else (and if your wondering i never name names just because lol)

Ill leave the big announcements for Tygon and Celica to drop cause Viva is their sorta baby Well leave it at "well be back" in just a little while.

You and that towel, its classic man, a TOTAL "Fayraree" thing, just like me and my wifebeaters (and/or breasts discussions )

Ya man, lovin' the towel action you always support, its a great idea... awesome of you to try to cool things off for your fellow TAs... way to go Fay! (i dont know how dance around w/ it tho, I think itd drive me nuts, i dont even like dancing around w/ my shirt tucked into the back of my pants--i should just stop bring them period to guv!)

He dropped some harder but very very plain tunes. No vibe at all.
The djs before played same stuff too. The only track that i liked that they played before the airwave came was Wave Force by Perry O'neil. I also liked one of the tunes airwave played. I dunno its name but ive heard it already on tranceplant 003. But that was it. When Mark Oliver came he dropped some good tunes but i was too tired to dance already so I left. You people who say how wicked this was probably didn't go to cool parties for a long time. Usually viva has a lot better djs than airwave, like before it was lady dana and cosmic gate. Which was uncompareble to this party.

Ummm yes you are right ....none of us who have posted the review of how great this party was have ever been to a cool party. But you my friend are UBER clubber. I mean comparing Airwave party with Cosmicgate party ??? Ummm yeah you are right we all are wrong.
First 5 or so tracks of Mark Oliver have been played by every Trance Dj in the world, even my 11 year old nephew can spin AVB - Shivers with Ferry Corsten - Holding On and make the crowd jump.
The reason you say you didnt like the Airwave set is because you prolly didnt get to hear many tunes that you knew of, but my friend thats the whole fun of going to see a good dj. They play new stuff that you never heard of and they make you dance your ass off and leave you wondering ' damn, where do i get that tune '.Thnx for coming out.

Posted by smuncky on Jun-25-2005 23:05:

yeh exactly, u cant compare other dj with airwave

they all got a different thing going

glad to hear all went well boys. cantw ait to see what paradigm has to offer in the future...

Posted by Aaron Joseph on Jun-26-2005 00:04:

ok... here we go...

first off id like to point out that i have never driven back and forth from Guelph to Toronto so many times in the last 2 days lol...5 times to be exact! That was really tiring

A lot of work, effort, heart and passion went into planning and organizing this event. I really wouldnt have been able to do it without the help of two very important teammates, Tim and Matt. Laurent told me that this was his first time to Canada that EVERYTHING went as it should have. He was very excited to come and experience the scene here in Toronto for the first time, and will return whenever we want him back!

Got there around 10pm (as awishabear mentioned) to meet up with Jason so we could all get eveything set up and organized. As 11pm came closer and closer, i was getting more anxious to get things rolling...so anxious i started to get a bit of a stomach ache...I was so stressed (even though i probably shouldn't have been). I wanted to make sure everything went as planned and everyone enjoyed themselves!

Finally i got to start the tunes off a lil bit after 11pm...it was definately a new experience for me playing at a place like Viva, and also very enjoyable. Though adapting to the environment in the booth compared to places like the Vault, or a house party was very difficult, i managed to slowly get the hang of it and get into a groove.

before i knew it, i was done and Tim took over...i went up to meet everyone and say hi...met a few new faces...dnmr (you were totally wasted), Pettiscool (you were even more wasted!!), Sunquest (so glad i finally got to meet you in person!!), Orko (awesome guy, thanks for comin out!), Tully & samhouse (true FRC members!), Avrey (forget your TA name! but i know i met you)...

to everyone else there: Alicia, Barry, Tyler, Cale, Dan, Rob, Andrea, Dennis, Lindsey, Lisa, Mike, Martin (thanks for letting me spin Language), Rob, Keika, Justin (and your 2 lady friends), Jason, Fahad (really glad to see you made it out), Rad, Alex, Lowell & Evi, Mike & Jenna, Carl, Shane, Warren & Heather (thanks for making it out, even if it was just for a little bit!)...and anyone else i missed...let me know if i did miss you, i will add you to the list!

really really impressed with the turnout...i danced for a bit, but most of the time, all i could do was just stand in the DJ booth and take in every moment of what was going on...mission accomplished sucessfully! Laurent told me that it was by far the best set he has done in a long time, and every moment of the night was very special for him.

Today, Matt and I took Laurent to do a formal meeting with the Viva club owner. On the way to meet him we had to make an important stop at a restaurant on Hwy 7: the Fire & Ice. Laurent certainly got a kick out of that! And i took a few pics for him to show his buddies and DJ Fire back home (for those of you who don't know, Fire & Ice is one of Laurent's biggest music aliases next to Airwave, partnered with DJ Fire.

After the meeting with Viva's owner, we went to Yorkdale mall where the infamous Apple Computer Store is located. lol Laurent was like a 'kid in a candy shop' checking out literally EVERYTHING the store had to offer, he ended up getting a new ipod mini and an ipod shuffle to add to his studio set up back home in Brussels. The trip to that computer store was literally the 'icing on the cake' for him. Afterwards we went to the Airport gave our final goodbyes to Laurent, and headed home.

This has certainly been one hell of a weekend, and i am particularly glad to know i dont have to work Sunday

i hope to see you all at Cor Fijneman & DJ Montana on July 15th!

Aaron
